1. Jason Lanier reviews the Rotolight NEO 2 – LED light and HSS Flash
hey guys my name is Jason Lin I'm a rhodolite master of lightness oniy artisan of imagery and i'm it so excited today to introduce to you the neo to the neo 2 is gonna revolutionize how people use lights especially small lights it does high-speed sync flash guys i know you guys have been asking about Neos you've been asking when they're gonna flash and rhodolite has done it which is amazing why is it a big deal that rotor lights put a flash inside of a neo quite frankly for those who wants something that fits just onto the hot shooter camera it can replace your external flash we've been testing this today with a 6500 a 1011 frames a second we're firing 200 shots and raw it fires every time there's no light loss there's no power loss the fact that it does that is just a game-changer have you ever been at a wedding and you're shooting and the bride is crying she's doing the dance and then your flash doesn't go off that is a heartbreaking moment because then you've missed that shot and there's absolutely no going back and replicating that if you can't do it this enables you to make sure you never miss a shot and that is amazing it's significantly brighter than the original neo it's very very bright guys I was very surprised the output on this light that's amazing the advantages of the neo 2 over a traditional strobe are very simple high speed sync over cycle time constant lighting options the ability to change your color temperature the fact that it runs very cool runs on six double A's and it'll last you for about three hours that's a very soft light we can modify it very easily it's just it's pretty amazing when it comes to comparing this versus a traditional strobe rhodolite has teamed up with elinchrom to include their skype art wireless flash receiver that's actually inside of the neo which is awesome as it means you don't need an external receiver saving you time and money when you use a traditional strobe you are constantly battling the struggle of acquiring focus whereas with a constant light that's on you can leave that constant light on you can acquire focus but then you can also strobe it when you need more power the fact that I can use a light that does both is what is so unique about this the neo enables me to be able to get work done with a very very small form-factor it's not intimidating if you're doing baby portraits you can just set it nicely on a bed it's not a big light it's really a dream come true for me as a photographer I love these lights why do I love them because quite frankly I've taken them everywhere I've been in swimming pools with them the other things are not waterproof but you know I've had them hanging off the sides of monopods I've taken it into the forest I've taken him to Ethiopia I've taken on the Cuba I've taken them all over the world for street photography wedding photography destination weddings the Neos a light that I could use for pretty much anything a portraiture macro work really anything and one thing that we always worry about as photographers it's ways for us to get more creative with our lighting and this enables me to be able to do that it's just such a nice light and now that it fires strobe and it's so much brighter it's just gonna make it even easier for me to use it it's just such a great kit and it's quite a bargain for a light that does so much you have those moments that you cannot miss this is an incredible light for you
2. REAL Truth, No BS, Hands On Review of the Rotolight Neo 2- High Speed Sync Off Camera LED and Flash
ever since the neo2 was launched there's been questions there's been articles there's been videos made regarding just what this light can do I cannot guarantee this is part of the manufacture warranty look at that guy's straight out of the camera no Photoshop wizardry here since I'm one of the only ones out there who has a neo - I have a responsibility to answer those questions for you guys because if you guys buy a neo - I want you to love it I'm gonna answer all the tough questions I've been put out there number one is this light meant to overpower the Sun so I'm going to show you guys just natural light LED a flash with just using double-a batteries and then I'm gonna get to show you guys flashes in the DTaP I'm going to show you guys off camera lighting distances camera settings everything on camera with the PC sync cable that is just beautiful that's a beautiful shot and I'm gonna share a lot of steals with you guys like some from here where it's a portrait studio type environment to give you guys a no BS real hands-on real results review of the rhodolite neo - I hope you enjoy it hey guys Jason linear here I just finished up a press tour in London regarding the neo - there's a lot of buzz about this light right now which is awesome it's an amazing light I am a rota light master of light and I'm happy to be sponsored by them with all the buzz comes a lot of questions and people want to know just what this light can do is it the answer to everything is it going to send people to the moon and cure cancer no it's not is it a great light that can help a lot of photographers out there I believe it is being that I am the only one out there with a couple of neo twos I want to make sure that I'm providing information to you guys I want you guys to be happy buyers I got if you guys are gonna buy this light I want you to be happy with it I really do and because of that we're gonna shoot this video and show you guys just what it can do this is not a marketing video this is a camcorder set up on a tripod running around Ireland miss Mattie's over there my helper Steven is over there where it's gonna run around take a few shots and some different scenarios and share them with you now I you've already shot two these when we did in the woods with Maddy the other one we did down at the beach with Russel Crowe it's not really Russell Crowe isn't he Stephen Fleming but he looks a little bit like Russell Crowe he's pretty sexy as we all know great light means that we get our modifier and our light sources close to our subject as possible and then we pull back just to allow it to not be in the frame that's the technique that I utilized with with the neo2 all right so as you guys can see there's a lot of sunlight coming in so Maddie's going to be backlit you can see by the shadows right now so there's a lot of backlight coming in there's a lot of ambient light in this scenario we're gonna bring up the Neo - we're gonna fire it on her and I'm shooting today with a 9 and the 85 G master ok so what we're gonna do is get real close to her and then back off another thing that this light will be great for is running gun situations if you don't want to set up a big big light you know we I've gotten busted countless times you guys know the stories can be getting in trouble at parks or beaches or wherever for setting up a mono light on a c-stand a bla bla bla bla bla this is a much smaller smaller footprint which enables me to get away with murder is the honest truth so this was never intended to replace a model like guys this was intended for run-and-gun beautiful portraiture and you're going to see just what we're doing here 1 2 3 beautiful beautiful go against the door there [Music] now the reason I'm doing this as you guys can see just how much shadows being cast on to the door from the rhodolite and just like ireland it was sunny two seconds ago now starting to pour rain now make sure my bags are closed now we couldn't have possibly planned this this is ridiculous it's now pouring rain take take the light away perfect and I'll put a foot back so they can see the difference this is another area where I love having this as a dual life because of the fact now I have an LED light I can shoot these LED or strobe if I want at this point as we deal with this torrential downpour we're under a canopy now here at this graveyard hoping to not get completely drenched this is the Santa Maria while aloof a storm man serious all right it's really wet by the way people have asked me countless times about using roto lights in the rain I cannot guarantee this is part of the manufacturer warranty but this is what I do so now we're gonna go a little bit old-school style with you guys I'm just setting up the neo2 in the rain you should probably put the rain cover there's a rain cover that you can buy with it but you should put the rain cover on it to do this kind of crap but now it's about six seven feet away from Maddy but what I'm gonna do is strobe or just so you guys can see the distance and go from there take about three steps back so now she's a good 10 feet from the light even on the video I'm watching the video you can see the lights hitting her face by the way this is just on double ace this is just on double ace we're not using the external battery pack this is just double ace damn dad's a for the rules look at that guy's chair out of the camera no Photoshop wizardry here patty stand right there then okay so the sun's peeking through now we're gonna fight with the Sun I say we can do one oh my goodness stay still for me Maddie well it's official the neo2 can catch rain 1 2 3 this isn't even the brightest this light can go because this light can go because I can double the power of it right now by using the external battery but I don't want to get it wet trim of the eyes what's up guys Jason linear Here I am in the woods near the Hellfire Club in Ireland we're sitting here in a forest and I can do some shots in the parking lot I posted a shot on Instagram earlier of my helper Steven listing Stephen Fleming photography he is helping me today and I posted a shot of him the neo was neo to was about six feet from him and we'll post the shot as I'm talking over this and it shows just what the light can do number one is this light meant to overpower the Sun no I wouldn't even use a speed light for that couple things to keep in mind the neo 2 is nearly twice as strong in LED mode as the neo one so just as a light source just as a video light as a continuous light it's a far better light than the neo one second thing is it strobes and yes it strobes on camera and more importantly off camera when I spoke to wrote a lot about developing this product the biggest piece to it was building a receiver inside of the light so it could do what fire off camera flash I think for the most part the vast majority of us we're not going to choose to shoot at noon or 1:00 p.m. when the Sun is blaring in the sky with undef' used light meaning there's no cloud cover there's nothing most of us are gonna shoot when light is more optimal so again it's it's great to know how to shoot for those conditions and for that I would use something like the a oh sorry I do use something like the like a mono light but for 70 80 % of the conditions that I use it would be something like the neo - so here's miss Maddie and she is ready to shoot she's dressed up and looking great thank you so I'm going to show you guys just natural light with the same setting so you can see how much the rota light impacts it I'm going to show you guys 100% then I'm going to show you guys a flash with just using double-a batteries and then I'm going to show you guys flash using the DTaP gonna light it up no like alright 1 2 3 ok put the LED honor ok there's 100% brightness 1 2 3 beautiful guys that's completely under fused that's just there's nothing on the front of it just completely under flood this is using the batteries ok I'm not going to change the settings 1 2 3 [Applause] okay and now let's plug in the DTaP and you can see when you plug in the DTaP it kind of restarts it put it in a flash mode okay one two three all right these are beautiful many so let's actually shoot a little bit pics it cloak and go like this one two three oh it's beautiful Maddy do this put your hand like this in front of your face a little further out right there one two three I'm doing this because I want you guys to see just how much light just being thrown cuz you can see the big shadow on her face and how much the impact the light really is having take the light over to the side Steven go on that side of the tree right there Maddy look that way for me just like that that's gorgeous some things people have been asking about online is because of the fact that we we talk about a having over cycle time they say well it must be a week light no it's it's firing from a good eight nine feet away it's firing every single time and the fact that I can do a shoot and not have to wait on a speed light is it's great yes you gotta look over to the left I love that all right guys so we've come out to a new location we're down here at the beach here in Ireland and just you guys are aware of the settings the video camera that's filming me is filming this at zero gain with an f-stop of 2.8 with two ND filters on it that it's at a shutter speed of 50th of a second as is the case in new film in 24p usually so what I'm going to test is whether or not the neo2 will fire bright enough to allow me to expose for the clouds okay so now we're gonna I'm gonna keep the camera still we're gonna do one with and one without alright so this is without okay now put it on perfect she's fast man that's awesome all right so guys let me let me tell you what the neo 2 isn't meant to do this is completely under fused light that's hitting me right now fact you can see just how bright I am there's a third ND filter on there now so I'm telling you it it's bright out here the neo 2 is not going to overpower this direct undef' use light it's not look at the lighting it's not it's not flattering lighting this isn't one I would want to use light anyways I would want to diffuse the light so if I was out here by myself shooting I would naturally put somebody into the shade and shoot that's that would be my preference are there times we have to go out here and shoot when it's just Sun absolutely there are that's not what the neo 2 is for the neo 2 is for shooting when you balance your light that's what it's for it's not meant to overpower the Sun I just want to be clear on that guys what you're gonna see in the shots is the neo 2 adds a very pleasing and soft light it's like a compliment to natural lighting it's it's really pretty and I found that when I first shot Maddie down in London and I'll share some of the shots here [Music] now we're shooting with the Sun there we go and it's just beautiful that's a beautiful shot it's not an overpowering light it's a complementary light that really feels in shadows adds a beautiful catch light and when you're shooting outdoors like this it really is like natural light with adding a pop of catch light it's really pretty alright guys so I wanted to give you guys a little bit of a feel for what it would be like to shoot this in the studio I did a workshop with our friends down at the EVC store in Miami and you're seeing a production still of it there and I'm going to show you guys some stills that we shot there now this is part of a group there's lots of people but this gives you an idea as to what it would look like in a portrait environment most of these are in LED mode because that's what I do when I do workshops to everyone else to shoot I think my biggest takeaway out these lights is the amount of usable light that I get with traditional strobe we have to confuse it deflector plate and a baffle in the socks that really soften it but these lights were getting such nice soft light right out of the box which I love and put them up close and if you need more power there's a shot to show you the difference in power between LED and just flash and that's just double-a if you need even more than that use the DTaP which gives you two mice that [Music] LED lighting to still photography is still a relatively new technology and I think like when a lot of us myself included switching DSLR to mirrorless we had everything away we shot a little bit and I think the same is true and switching from traditional strobes and flash units to more LEDs that can strobe at this point and it it's a different way to light guys I've been using LEDs in my still photography many many years but now that I have a light that strobes as well as provides LED functionality for me for me it's a complete game-changer I'm just telling you really is a different way to light and you have to approach it differently guys keep asking questions we want to know what your questions are we do I want to know what your questions are I want to answer them for you and one thing that I think that we should all keep in mind the biggest difference between LED and flash anytime you use flash a lot of the times you're having to diffuse it two or three times to make it more pleasing so when we're talking about mono lights or stuff like that we're putting the deflector plate in front then we're putting a baffle then we're putting a sock will I still use flash that's like a traditional mono light yeah if I need to overpower the Sun if I'm in Nevada and there's completely end a few Sun and I have to for some reason shoot at one o'clock in the afternoon which is the most horrible time to shoot which is by the way I would never choose to shoot then that would be very very rare circumstance when I would choose those lighting scenarios to shoot so when I tell people that I use this light and 70 80 percent of what I do it's because I choose to shoot in times where there's better lighting I don't want to have to overpower the Sun because I guess you have to ask yourself how often do you really need to overpower the Sun if you need to overpower a lot for some reason in your work then this is not the light for you if you don't have to overpower the Sun and you choose to shoot when there's more diffuse light if you choose to diffuse light when there's harsh light which is what I do if you choose to shoot indoors a lot if you choose to do anything of that nature that's what this light is intended to do and I just wanted to make that clear where would I use this how would I use this is to be perfect to sit on top of a camera to use as an LED to illuminate everything as you're going through an event wedding photography would be amazing event photography would be amazing bar mitzvahs bat mitzvahs birthday parties that kind of stuff doubt this would be amazing light because in all the talk of it being an off-camera high-speed sync strobe one thing that gets forgotten a little bit at this point in time is the fact that at its heart it's still an LED light and it's nearly twice as bright is the first meal which is something that should not be forgotten you guys have watched my reviews and talking about the gear that I use on Sony cameras and lenses for a long time and you guys know I only talk about what I use I think that's important I don't read spec sheets to you guys and I don't talk about gear that I don't use because honestly if I don't use it I really don't know anything about it so I am trying to just bring you guys real results from gear that I actually truly use when I hope it helps so until next time keep shooting never give up on your dreams find our key that works for you and remember you only have I'll talk to you guys later bye you guys still here hello talking to you hey guys if you want to learn online with me go to patreon.com/scishow tog raphy and you will be able to continue this craziness online from anywhere on planet earth with me if you want to join me live go to Jason Lanier comms and you'll get to see me and my full glory live and in person guys yeah I got it talk to the guys
3. Rotolight NEO II – How to Set-Up Flash & High Speed Sync Functionality
one of the things that makes the neo to so powerful as a light system is not just its continuous light power but its flash capabilities the flash can be up to five hundred percent brighter than the continuous light source and this makes it an amazing resource for photographers not just videographers and there's a couple other additional things that you need to know about the flash now you can just use your regular PC sync cable or a variety of transmitters and receivers that will pair with this device but they've teamed up with elinchrom to bring you some really special added features so if you have an elinchrom sky port or HS sky port transmitter they've got the receiver built into this light and it gives you the ability to do some high sync and high-speed sync photography so up to 1/8 thousandth of a second in your shutter speed as well as you can remotely control up to 10 lights in four different groups and control the color temperature and the power output all remotely from your HS sky port we're gonna get into that we're going to show you how to set up that HS sky port but first I want to take you through the basic flash settings so if you're using just a basic PC sync cable or you're using a variety of different transmitters and receivers with this light it's a pretty simple process so we'll get into that right now to do basic flash photography with the rhodolite neo is super simple and rather inexpensive all you need is a PC sync cable and one end will go into your camera I am using a 5d Mark 4 here and then the other end will go into the PC sync spot right on the rhodolite neo now there are a couple other options if you have a transmitter receiver there's a variety of them that are compatible with this light system you just have to check on rhodolite site for a list of compatible transmitters and receivers as well as if you do not have this little spot on your camera rhodolite sells a great device it's really inexpensive and it communicates through your hot shoe and then that will go into the PC sync port so first things first we are make sure that our camera is on we are going to spark our light let the light turn on if you haven't seen our introductory video that runs us through the full menu system of this light make sure to check that the link is in the description below but we're going to go right into the menu and as we know if from that video is we double press the two and that gets us into the menu it immediately spits you into the flash setting now if you see the word flash you are not in flash mode what you have to do is you have to press the button the left hand button and that will get you into flash mode you will be presented with your shutter speed so it goes as high as one one thousandth of a second and I can dial that all the way down to one fiftieth of a second there's a few other things I can do I can control the color temperature by pressing and rotating at the same time the left button so you can see my color temperature here change around forty seven forty eight hundred is the best spot for it to be perfectly honest because that's where you get the most light output considering that it is a bicolor light so all the LEDs are firing you can also change the modeling light with that left-handed dial so the left-handed dial will just change the modeling light not the overall power if you need to change the power you do that through this left one and you do that by pressing it and now about Max and then I can dial down the overall power of the light so simply I'm at 1/100 here I make sure that I go into my camera settings and that my camera settings are set to flash all cameras are going to be different so hopefully you know your camera well we've already done that and I'm going to set my shutter speed to be compatible with the shutter speed here so they're both at 1/100 and I'm gonna fire off BAM works great I'm gonna dial up to one one-thousandth and I'm gonna do the same on my camera one one-thousandth BAM super fast the recycle time is zero which makes this really great for you know high frame rate photography so as you can see or just fire it off BAM and zero recycle time you're basically just limited to what your camera can do but not what the light can do which is amazing so that's basically it that's super super simple you just adjust here obviously this is not a TTL product so you're gonna have to take a test shot and then adjust accordingly based on your test shots but it's a pretty simple flash system to use the next thing we want to show you is how the elinchrom HS sky port allows you to get high-speed sync how to set that up and all the other features that come along with that product so let's get into that right now alright so moving on now to working with the elinchrom HS sky port transmitter now the great thing about this is that that's all you need is the transmitter you don't need to buy a receiver and you take that transmitter and you just simply place it on the hot shoe of your camera slide that in and we are ready to go now there is a bit of an order of operations if you do it a little bit out of order it may not connect to the light fixture so the first thing you want to do is turn on the light itself once that is turned on you can now go ahead and turn on your transmitter and we're going to let that transmitter boot up and then finally you're going to turn on your camera and you're ready to go now there are some settings that you need to take care of in the light fixture itself and some settings you need to take care of in the transmitter but we'll do the settings on the light first so going in what we're going to do is we're going to go into our menu system that again is going to take us into our flash settings what I want to do is I want to bus over to trigger I want to tell it that our trigger is the sky port so that's two buttons once we've selected sky port as our trigger we are going to back out and we are going to buss over back to flash and we're going to click that and make sure that our flash settings are on one fiftieth of a shutter speed if you set it to anything else it is not going to work one fiftieth is a way for it to tell to work with the transmitter so now we can just leave it simply as that moving on to our transmitter we're gonna do a couple things we've got to take care of a few things first off is it needs to find this device now it could automatically find it if it doesn't you can go into a scan mode and it will scan for all sort of receivers in the area and it will find this device once it's paired you need to go into your setup menu and I've already done this but I'm going to show you what you're looking for is I'm gonna go down to our LSP mode and I'm gonna find speed there's two options or speed and there's normal so we want speed and then we are going to go down below that under sync mode and we want to select HS there are some other modes that available here there's some sort of arrow thing which I don't understand and they're standard but we want HS so that's all we really care about and we can exit out of that so once we have it set up and it's paired we can do some other adjustments from the transmitter first of course is just your modeling light so your modeling light is just through this power setting it's automatically there I can turn that up and down as I need to then I can move over to these mo d function and when I click the mo D function it will adjust my overall power so my flash is actual power I just need to click the mo D function one more time and it's gonna change to a little mod plus/minus symbol and that's gonna allow us to adjust our color temperature and if you remember from earlier having it set around forty seven hundred degrees Kelvin is sort of ideal forty seven forty eight hundred for max amount of power and now just remind you that it's not a TTL system so we still do have to make a test shot and then adjust accordingly with that test shot but I just want to show you that I can go there's one one hundredth of a second and we fire off really nicely I can go up to one one thousandth of a second as we did before so there's one one thousandth and it's firing really nice and then I can go up to our high speed sync all the way to one 8,000th and it's firing the same holds true when I go into my drive mode here for our high frame rates and we're shooting at one eight thousandth of a second with zero refresh time so before I wrap up I do want to show you the flash functionality of the three light kit and to do that I'm gonna get my good friend Paul in here to model for us and we're gonna try a few things and show you both the basic flash and high-speed sync and some of the creative things that we can do just with these three lights they look down [Music] okay so that's pretty much it whether you are shooting in standard flash mode or in the high sink mode that is available through the elinchrom HS sky port both systems are super fast and easy to set up and you will be shooting in a matter of minutes now of course if you want to pair the lights or group them there are some details on rota lights website if you download the manual will tell you about how to do all of that but this is the simplest way to just get it up and shooting so that's it thanks for watching and happy shooting

5. Rotolight NEO II Review Bicolor LED and HSS Flash
welcome back YouTube in today's video I'll be going over the rhodolite neo - LED and HSS flash so you may have caught my previous video about the rhodolite neo - and the ensuing shitstorm a lot of you voice the idea that you didn't like me reviewing a product without having my hands on it and for that I completely understand so right off the bat I'd like to extend a massive thank you to rhodolite for actually sending me an EO 2 kit despite the whole controversy they got one to me and i'm really thankful for that because now i can review it for you guys let's go over what I have in my kit the rhodolite neo 2 comes with the light a shoe mount some basic gels AC adapter and carrying case in addition we have the V mount battery barndoors chimera softbox a 6-pack of line hard double-a batteries that rhodolite recommends and the elinchrom Skyport trigger we also have a kit of color effect gels the neo 2 is circular and has three spots where you can mount the shoe the carrying case fits the Neo power supply gels and if you want you can put the batteries into the individual slots in the front but that's really inefficient so I just dump them in the case or leave them in the light so while the LED will achieve maximum brightness using just double-a batteries in order to get the most power and the 500 percent overcharge out of the flesh you're going to need to use either the V mount battery or the included AC adapter the V mount battery doesn't mount to the light itself so you're gonna need a different mount to attach it to a stand the Neo 2 is roto Lights most portable and smallest light in their lineup of LED panels it is by colors so you can change the color temperature from 3150 kelvin all the way up to 60 300 kelvin this makes it really simple to balance it with any ambient lighting that you can see or any other lighting products that you're using on 6 double-a batteries at maximum brightness the LED will be powered for one and a half hours it's dimmable from 0 to 100% at any color temperature and it uses a dynamic drift technology to ensure that even when you dim it the color temperature stays perfectly accurate its most powerful output occurs at 40 110 degrees kelvin which is the point at which both of the bicolor LEDs are at their maximum output otherwise it achieves the balance by using different ratios of the bicolor LEDs you can read about this on rhodolite site but they have won awards for the brightness of this LED and I definitely take their word for it because it's beating out most of the other LED panels that I have laying around even ones that are slightly larger or less portable than the rhodolite neo - the CRI of this panel is 96 which is very high and that means it's going to do an excellent job at accurately representing all colors I've used a lot of Genki LEDs as I've begun exploring video more and this is definitely the best quality of light that I've seen come out of such a small panel it's also flicker free so if you're doing any high frame rate footage you don't have to worry about the rhodolite negatively impacting your footage so this is marketed as both an LED light and an HSS flesh that's because in addition to the LED the neo 2 has a flash mode in which it will pulse and overcharge the LEDs up to 500% to kind of simulate a flash it will overcharge by 500% when using the V mount battery or an AC adapter but on the doublea's it only goes up 250% it's a very unique and new way of creating flash by using LED lights rather than a flash tube it's capable of firing up to eighteen thousand five hundred full power flashes on the doublea's which means that two hundred and fifty percent overcharged the reason that LED flash is really nice for high speed sync is because it doesn't suffer the same efficiency loss that a flash tube would since its operating as a constant light from the start it doesn't have to decrease its power in order to increase its flash duration and work for high speed sync now here's a part I wanted to stress in my last video the rhodolite neo 2 is not going to replace the power that you can achieve from a flash including a speed light i meter the neo 2 at its max color temperature of 40 110 degrees kelvin with the v mount battery to ensure the max plus setting of a 500% overcharge and at 5 feet I got an F 2 and 5 tenths of a stop a speed light with the wide angle diffuser on and the magmod mag sphere to emulate the same spread of light that the rhodolite has metered at f11 point 3 that is a 4.8 stop difference at a typical sync speed now speed lights lose two to three stops of light when they enter high speed sync so if we lost three that means the speedlight would only be 1.8 stops more powerful than the rhodolite neo 2 in high-speed sync so basically a rhodolite neo 2 in high-speed sync is like your typical speed light at 1/4 power or 1/32 power and traditional sync speeds but that's also with the rhodolite at 40 110 degrees Kelvin and with the V mount battery which makes it far less portable if we increase it to daylight balance it's going to lose about 4/10 of a stop and removing the V mount battery and sticking with traditional double a's is going to make it lose a whole nother stop so it's just not a replacement for the peak power that you can get from a speed light however the rhodolite can recycle instantly even at its max power so it's certainly a back and forth argument of where one would be more useful than the other if you're in a low light environment then you can certainly get away with using the rhodolite to replace a speed light but if you take it outdoors it's just not going to live up to what you can get from the speed light it simply doesn't have the power when high-speed sync is most necessary which is in really bright conditions HSS doesn't have the same value that it does indoors as it does outdoors rhodolite has made it clear that for strong outdoor lighting you're definitely going to want to use one of their larger panels the neo 2 uses two dials on the back to navigate its various functions I'll be honest I'd prefer a more detailed display and input here the arcade claw machine display just doesn't cut it for the amount of options and neo 2 has while it works fine for displaying the color temperature and LED brightness it gets a bit aggravating once you start navigating the menus confirming and backing out of the menu options require clicking in the two dials I think a simple menu ok and back button would really clear everything up and a display with more than four characters would just make it easier to see and navigate the menus thankfully that isn't your only method of control the rhodolite neo 2 has a built-in receiver for the elinchrom Skyport trigger this makes syncing the rhodolite flash and HSS easy once you learn the menus it allows you to quickly choose flash power LED power and color temperature the dial on both the Skyport trigger and the rhodolite itself have a sensitivity threshold so if you want to modify the color or brightness and small increments you move the dial slowly but you can also move fast to fly through the adjustments well you can adjust the color temperature from the elinchrom trigger you don't have a kelvin readout of that temperature one of the things I did really like from the previous video was the cine SFX or special effects lighting options there is quite a few options for manipulating both the intensity of the light and how it pulses and the bicolor aspects and when you pair that with the color effect gels there's just an endless list of options for making creative effects and I have presets built in to emulate popular effects that you might use when filming on a set all of these have an additional level of customization where you can dial in how fast they flicker or the variance and the pulses to really dial it in for whatever your production needs speaking of gels since you have control of the roto lights color temperature using the by color aspects there's no need for a CT b or CTO gel but they do have both diffusion gels as well as gels to modify the tint so that you can balance this with fluorescent lighting all these gels can be held firmly in place behind the front clear panel of the rhodolite some of the gels are specifically designed for some of those cine s effects that we mentioned previously and they're all clearly labeled for you to figure out what works best so overall that rhodolite neo 2 is definitely a premium LED the quality of light the bicolor leds the cine sfx they all merge together to make this thing extremely versatile i do think some of its marketed flash applications are simply overhyped because it just doesn't have the power to replace a speed light outdoors I will say if you are applying this to low-light scenarios that if that's where you mainly work is in low-light indoor situations where the color is changing in every room then this is going to be a really cool tool for both videography and photography one thing to be aware of the width of flesh and even in using it indoors is that the flash powers are only full stop increments so you don't have quite the level of control in between stops of light which would result in having to move it a lot forward and backward to compensate for minor differences I really wish they had a smaller V mount battery that would attach to the rhodolite neo2 just like the current V mount matter does on their larger panels it completely restricts the portability of the unit when you try to use it with the V mount battery especially if you want those benefits of the increased overcharge in the flash so row delay please make a small V mount battery so that users can have the best of both worlds or at least get a V mount stand attachment on your website please the interface could benefit from a few more buttons and a more detailed display and lastly the system price is going to cost sicker shock for a lot of people I think you can justify the $400 on the rhodolite neo to itself especially for anyone who is concerned about color critical work this is going to slot in perfectly at that price photographers and videographers aren't going to shy away from a price if it means high quality light time and time again but the prices on all the accessories especially the barn door the rain cover the softbox they just seem too high for what they are given that rhodolite increased the output of the neo to 85 percent from its predecessor i'm really curious to see how far they can push this LED flash technology and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested in using one of their larger panels outdoors if you think with all this information that the neo 2 could fit your 6. Impressions of the Rotolight Neo 2 – A Small Light with LED and HSS Flash
what's going on YouTube a little bit different of a video today you can see I am sitting at my desk this is where I do all of my editing both the videos and the photo set of things the reason I'm sitting in front of my desk today is because I want to go over some promotional material for the new rhodolite neo2 i've seen it in the comments of my videos I've seen it on forums and Facebook groups a lot of people are talking about this rhodolite neo2 because of some of the promotional materials claim so I thought I would highlight some portions of the promotional material and explain to you what it all mean and the reason I'm doing this is because the nature of the promotional material is kind of exclaiming that this is a new era of photography and I understand companies are going to use hyperbole in their marketing in order to gain excitement about a product but the reason I'm making this video is because lots of people are buying the hype and I don't want to call what they're saying about their product misinformation but I do want to explain the reality of how this tool is gonna impact us as photographers so I'm going to show you some parts of the promotional footage I want to go over all of their claims and explain what it actually means for us so right off the bat we've got the dawn of a new age of on-camera lighting this is what I mean typing us up man this is this is some crazy gear that we're talking about here apparently because it's a new age of on camera lighting revolutionary on camera continuous LED light and HSS flash so this is a continuous LED light all LED and it's an HSS flash so what is HS s HS s stands for high-speed sync it is an extension of flash duration it along gates the flash duration for a long period of time at least in comparison to a standard flash duration standard flash duration is like a thousandth of a second or even faster but high-speed sync extends that duration so that the entire camera sensor can be exposed to light even when a camera shutter is moving so fast that the entire sensor isn't open at one point so in short HSS is a flash acting as a continuous light for a short period of time and I don't know why they keep on saying only on-camera on-camera continuous LED light and HSS like you can use this off-camera that is one of the cool things about it that it is off-camera maybe that HSS is an off-camera I don't know so again now featuring high speed sink the previous rhodolite products were strictly leds now it's a flash so we'll get into what that means so we can see here it's flashing really really quick capture every moment no recycle time never miss a shot this is a first point i want to hit on there's a reason there's no recycle time flashes have to recycle because they are dumping a very high power output and then the batteries need to recycle those capacitors i don't know like the actual tactical crap that's happening inside but essentially you're making a lot of light for a very short period of time so if something just requires zero recycle time ever that should tell you something it's because there isn't a ton of output coming out of it and you might say like a Profoto b1 can recycle instantly and that's a ton of power yeah that's some really great engineering and it can do that for a certain amount of time but eventually it's gonna slow down okay so this is gonna revolutionize like how we use lights it fires every time so you can see he's shooting it at like 11 frames per second again the reason that he's able to shoot at 11 frames per second is because there's no recycle time so it's gonna fire every single time and the reason it's able to fire without recycling is because it's not a significant amount of light output and i'm gonna get into the actual amount of light output in a moment and give you a comparison so you can understand how bright this thing is gonna be with flash 85 percent brighter than neil 1 cool looks like they're they're advancing their technology their LED technology we're gonna see that we're gonna see LED technology continue to provide more output as time goes on and that's great i'm in full support of LED technology getting better adjustable color 6300 230 150 in flash and continuous modes LED panels have been doing this for a while now it's called bicolor LED essentially you have two different color temperature bulbs that you use to make various colors you've got a set of light bulbs that are 31 50 and you've got a set of bulbs that are in this case 6300 so you've got both ends of the spec and what it does to create all those temperatures in between is it just uses a different ratio of lights so if you wanted to use 5000 it would use say two-thirds of the 6300 light and one-third of the 3100 bulb and if you were all the way down at 31 50 then it's not going to use the 6300 bulbs at all and vice versa at the top of it now what this means is that its maximum output is not going to be daylight balance its maximum output is going to be when both lights are on completely fully which is gonna happen I think in this light around 4100 this means the maximum power output that they are promoting is at forty one hundred degrees Kelvin which is far less useful than a daylight balance so you can see right here those different colors of the bulbs you can see that there are the white bulbs in the yellow bulbs that is daylight bulbs and 3200 Kelvin bulbs tungsten bulbs it's not tungsten lighting but it's matching tungsten color through LED lighting adjustable flicker-free dimming this is another benefit of LED technology getting better is that we're not seeing as much flicker in products even when they're at a lower price the last thing you want to be dealing with when you're using these for video purposes is flicker and you can also notice it in photo if there's a certain level of flicker and you're shooting at a high enough shutter speed then you can actually create light or color imbalances in your photos that's what happens with fluorescent lighting in rooms is you're seeing a flicker in the color temperature and that's why your photos might look like crap in fluorescent lighting built-in Skyport flash receiver if you've ever used the elinchrom Skyport system it's designed for the native elinchrom lighting it looks like they made some deal to use that technology hey that's also good because elinchrom is super reliable stuff so as you can see now they've got it off camera don't know why they were saying on camera but it looks like you can use the high-speed sync off camera which if it was on camera only that would have been useless featuring an updated suite of cine SFX I like that fire effect where you can kind of did see the dimming of the fire as it's a very warm temperature and then it looked like they had a lightning where it's flickering at its highest output and then dying down and I think those are pretty cool I'd like to see more of they do with that I don't know how many applications there are but hey anytime that you can make it simpler for filmmakers to get unique effects like that also in support boom this is the biggest indicator of its power output 85,000 flashes on six double-a batteries if a canon speed light can get three four hundred full power flashes on four double a's why can this get 85,000 it's because it's not putting up nearly as much light output not anywhere near it maybe one twentieth sounds like again we're gonna break down those numbers in a bit but this when I saw this this is all I needed to see to tell me that this was not creating much light because unless they found a new way to manufacture light output without using electricity then these numbers yeah you get it looks like all those bulbs are RGB so that's really cool as well I know I've got that young newell wine 360 and i love being able to create colors with those other bulbs that are there this is different it looks like the regular bulbs of ones that are designed to project the 5500 Kelvin or 3200 Kelvin can also be used to create those color effects which is nice because it means the output of those colors will be strong optional barn doors optional softbox if you're looking at it as a photographer if you're looking at this and thinking oh yeah it does have modifiers for it if you put that thing in a softbox and take any of that light that you were getting out of it you're gonna be in trouble especially if you think you're gonna be putting it in a big soft box like a 3-foot softbox or something I don't know what modifiers they are doing but I do like that they have proprietary modifiers because otherwise this system would be useless to somebody like me because if I can't modify my light source then what do I care but you're gonna be limited proprietary modifiers never a good thing oh they'll sell you three of them if you want okay small light big results a lot of people would mistake this for soft light it's not soft light it's flat light it's light directly on access with the camera this is what happens you don't get any shadows whatsoever the shadows that are created are directly behind whatever is creating them and therefore you don't see them from the point of the camera and another piece of promotional material they were calling this a soft light and no nothing but relative size will make soft light all right so essentially this is an LED this is an LED flash this isn't the first time we've seen it we've seen it before the luma cube is very similar to this and that it's an LED but it calls itself a flash simply because it can project LED lighting for a short period of time this isn't a flash tube that we're talking about it's LED bulbs there's a there's a peak amount of power that they can create that's all that there is to it one nice thing is that rhodolite did publish the actual light output specs on this so that we can compare so on their website under the technical specs for the neo 2 you can see that its peak power is at 40 110 kelvin 41 10 Kelvin temperature that is the peak output that this light can perform at because that's when both bicolor LEDs all the LEDs on it are going to be at full power PSU power so these measurements aren't even on a battery these are apparently on a power supply the 9 foot rating on this at ISO 200 is F 2.8 if you had your camera at ISO 200 and one sixtieth of a second and you had this 9 feet away from your subject then you would have to use an aperture of f28 that is not powerful that is not powerful at all let's break this down if it was ISO 100 it would be f2 and this is the HSS flash mode that we're talking about here 9 feet f2 ISO 100 first off let's imagine that we had this at daylight balance so that it's how we would use flash we're gonna lose another let's say 2/3 of a stop we're down to F 1.6 F 1.6 ISO 109 feet if you were to use an 8200 and the reason I'm saying 8200 here is because that's what somebody is asking me somebody said this was 200 watts or the equivalent of 200 watt seconds no we'll talk about a 200 watt second light the godox 8200 at iso 100 at 10 feet not even 9 feet would measure over f/8 i think it's 8.3 but let's just call it f/8 for comparison so we've got f 8 vs f 1.6 that is about a 5 stop difference in power and that means that you would need 32 rhodolite neo twos to match the power output of an 8200 at full power 32 of them so I think that this rhodolite neo has a lot of cool perks but it's still just a continuous light there's a reason that all of their promo material is filled in these completely dark rooms because that's the only place that these are really going to be extremely useful now I think that there's a huge market for videographers cinematographers anybody doing video that is going to find this product really useful being a bicolor LED those creative effects the RGB all of those are going to be great for videographers but in terms of this revolutionising photography not gonna happen there's tons of LED products on the market that are hitting this level of power output you could go use any of those turn those on and essentially have the same HSS flash experience because in the end of the day all this is is continuous light sound like a broken record at this point I'm seeing so many misconceptions about this light and it's not even out yet that I just wanted to clear it up for everybody who is interested this way I have something to point to when people ask me about it because I know this thing is only going to get more popular the way it's being promoted so hope that helped you out leave a like if you enjoyed the video make sure to subscribe if you want to see more and keep 7. ROTOLIGHT AEOS 2 – The most IMPRESSIVE LED Studio Light YET!
The Rotolight AEOS 2 isn’t just your standard LED panel light. Nor is it a regular flash light. It’s so much more in every way. Now, I’ve had my eye on the Rotolight AEOS version 1 for quite a number of years. Ever since I attended the Photography Show at the NEC in Birmingham 5 years ago. I wanted one. Badly. They just looked so appealing, that lovely round panel of powerful LED’s, flicker free continuous light, ultra portable. Perfect for both video and stills photography. Well, with the release of the Rotolight AEOS 2 earlier this year, this is now easily the most useful and impressive light in my collection of lighting equipment. And now with the latest release of the new firmware update 2.01 plus the long awaited android and IOS app which lets you control this light from your phone, it is even more impressive and appealing. So let’s look at why is this light so good. Firstly, this LED light does what no other panel light does and that is High Speed RGB Flash photography up to 8000th of a second. Paired up with the Elinchrom Skyport transmitter, or a third party flash receiver like the Godox X1T with a PC sync cable, you can get up to 100,000 full power flashes on a single charge. Erm, honestly, who the heck is going to test to authenticate that, not me. But what this means in the real world is that you can probably go quite a few professional photoshoot sessions without worrying about losing power when in flash mode. The AEOS 2 also lets you flash in a huge palette of colours with 2,500 filters from LEE and Rosco to choose from. So no need to mess around with attaching gels anymore. The flash output is also greater than the maximum output you get in continuous light mode where the light is drawing 120 watts of power, however, when in Flash mode, the wattage is increased momentarily to 240 watts to carefully overcharge the LED’s which according to Rotolight, produces 1 extra stop of power. In my real world tests, I’ve only been able to produce between half and 2 3rds of a stop, depending on where you set the Kelvin white balance. So I don’t think this is exact science, But still, the extra boost of power is very handy for outdoor situations when competing with the sun. And speaking of the sun, how does this light perform in sunny conditions. Well, let’s not beat around the bush, this light is not going to overpower the sun like a big 600 watt studio light but what it is going to do is handle fill light to fill in those shadows on the dark side of the face. And do it beautifully without the need for an assistant holding a bounce reflector, the Rotolight AEOS 2 will balance out sunlight photography within a meter or two from the subject. Obviously, this is not going to be useful for group shots where the light needs to be set further back but for solo portraits, this is ye guy. Which brings me onto the topic of soft boxes. Because of the layout of the LED’s in this round formation, the light produced from the Rotolight is naturally quite soft. Not as soft as attaching a softbox is but of course but we’re talking about ultra portability here, this light is designed for on the go, portable photography and videography, the fact that you can produce pleasing fall off of light without the need to carry an extra softbox is hugely appealing. And we don’t always want super soft light anyway. These images were produced without any softbox or the defuser panel attached which comes with the Rotolight AEOS 2. The light is soft but with satisfying fall off in those shadows. And did I mention that there is no delay between flashes. With a standard speedlite, there will be a refresh time between flashes where the light needs to recharge. With the Rotolight, there is instant power, no delay. So when your camera is set to fast continuous burst mode, every frame, every frame will be accompanied by a flash from the AEOS 2. No other flash unit that I own can do that! So it’s great for capturing moving subjects and action photos. Now the continuous light comes with all of those 16 millions colours, incredible power control right throughout the range, white balance control from 3000 kelvin all the way up to 10,000 kelvin and now with the release of the recent firmware update, the ability to control the tint. What?! This is super useful for videography gaining perfect white balance. You have at your finger tips all of the 2500 filter colours and this can all be achieved by this very impressive touch screen. I must say, even a none professional who knows little about lighting could navigate around this interface. The sliders gives you instant control over power output and kelvin range and if you need more precise control then the physical knobs can achieve this. In HSL mode the sliders will give you full control over hue output and saturation of that colour. There is no colour that this light can’t achieve. Any button that has a triangle will have a secondary function. This touch screen is great, it’s very responsive but ergonomically, not in the best position to control it when you’re set up on a tripod and in position for shoots for portraits where you’re on that 45 degree angle. The battery just gets in the way and you just can’t see what you’re doing. This is where the new Android and IOS app comes into play. The app allows you to control the light exactly like using the actual touch screen but instead remotely from your phone. Very useful for those hard to reach places or where you don’t have an assistant to help change settings. Other physical elements of the AEOS 2 - it’s pretty well built. Nice and sturdy metal handles, Plasticky in places but this helps to keep the weight down which without the battery, it is lighter than a 13inch MacBook Pro so it’s very appealing for location shoots. The dials have a nice ratcheted action and push feature and of course the screen is very bright and responsive. A minor flaw is the position of the on/off switch. You need a confident push action to turn it on or off which means that you’ll probably need two hands in order to do that. One hand to steady it. And in the dark it can be a pretty tricky to locate. I think a better switch would have been a regular flick switch on the side towards the bottom for when the light is positioned high. There are fans which kick in when the continuous light has been on for a while but they aren’t overly loud. Here’s a little demo of how loud the fan gets. So this is a test for the fans, we’re at 100% power, 4600 kelvin which is the maximum brightness across the entire range of LED’s and the fan has just kicked in now. This wouldn’t bother me too much when filming. In fact, the new firmware update has the ability to control the fan when shooting videography. Battery that comes with the AEOS 2, their own V lock mounted unit which takes around a couple of hours to charge. Pretty standard. And gets you those 100,000 flashes and in continuous light mode, at full power and 4600 kelvin you’ll get around an hours worth of light but again, the fan will kick in after a while. So who is this light for? Well, perhaps the question should be, who is it not for! There are a huge number of applications where this light would come in very handy, personally, I would use this light on location photoshoots especially if I had no assistant to help me. Because of the lightweight slimline design and the no need for a softbox, windier conditions will be a lot more manageable, I would use the light for filming talking head shots for my YouTube channel, definitely action photography where I can utilise the instant no refresh output and High Speed Sync. The applications for short films or feature films where the special effects could really add a touch of professionalism to your content. The quality of the light that comes off of the Rotolight AEOS 2 is first class too. With a TLCI rating of 99 out of 100, this is the Television lighting consistency index, these scores are exceptional. But the RGB flash and continuous light function of AEOS 2 is where this light really shines, I would use this light for colour accents, kicker lights just like how I’m using it now on the side of my face, lighting a room for a specific ambience and adding fill light. Really, the usefulness of this light is endless and a real professional addition to any lighting equipment line up! Having the ability to recall your favourite lighting scenarios with the memory buttons will get you faster results too. And solo portraits, the light is nice and even with lovely fall off and no hotspots, even without diffusing, creating dramatic images like these beauties. I big thank you to Lila Adele, you can find her on Instagram here. And I’ll pop a link in the description. Anyway, thanks for watching guys and hopefully, this has helped you in deciding whether to get one of these industry first RGB LED lights. 8. Rotolight AEOS2 Hands-On
this video is sponsored by rotolite hold that thought hey everybody i'm hugh brownstone for three blind men and an elephant and today i want to give you a quick hands-on update with a pre-production sample of the 1400 eos 2 from british company rhodolite which as i just said has sponsored this video but to be clear one sponsored is not the same thing to me anyway as surrendering my critical thinking skills it's not how i'm built it wouldn't be good for you or for me and i don't do it two roto light had no input into this video no preview of this video no oversight of any kind which three is as it should be and i thank them for respecting those boundaries without having to be asked so with that out of the way here's the bottom line to date beginning with the good news the eos 2 is the most unique and sophisticated light i've ever had in hand fair enough for those of you who haven't seen the first video it is a continuous bi-collar rgb led panel with a very wide 3000 to 10 000 kelvin cct range millions of colors via its hsi functionality thousands of built-in electronic filters and a dozen precisely special effects in continuous mode it is usable for video and stills but it is also a wireless high-speed sync flash with built-in receiver for ln chrome triggers which can take advantage of that color flexibility with virtually no recycle time [Music] and a battery that will power through far more shots than any internally battery-powered dedicated flash i can think of i found that in both continuous led and flash mode 50 power in the first case 100 power in the second i never worried about running out of juice hallelujah i stopped the continuous mode test after three and a half hours because the battery still showed two of four bars left and i had other things to do i didn't even bother trying to drain the battery with the flash then i'll canter but the thing that actually made me happy the thing that made it a joy to use again this is just me is rotolite's graphical touch interface it is the best i have ever seen in a light so lighting manufacturers and camera manufacturers for that matter look and learn as for the actual quality and quantity of light well beyond the tlci the index that supersedes cri television lighting consistency index of 99 percent and output of 11 500 lux at three feet that rhodolite quotes my own eyes tell me that the light is beautiful and clean as good or better than anything i've ever seen or used including a panel that cost more than twice as much with power sufficient at 100 to serve as a a crisp key light for portraiture with included diffuser dome on no need for additional diffusion or a fill at about just one meter away just out of frame b a softer key light for portraiture with included diffuser dome on again and blasting through a three and a half foot diameter scrim just about at the same distance though to be fair at a two or three stop penalty still no need for a fill useful for video or stills c an even softer enveloping rembrandt level key light here in the batcave with this video once again no fill this time without the included diffuser now bounced into a v-flat closer to 2 meters away yeah even d as a key light for a 2-shot with included dome diffuser no fill required even softer with a scrim from as far out as three meters and you won't want to use it without the included dome under that scenario because then specular highlights get funky with the individual leds and it's not comfortable for on-screen talent because it's bright all of this quality quantity and flexibility comes wrapped in a lightweight relatively compact and aesthetically pleasing package engineered with on-board thermal management so good that in continuous mode it can go essentially indefinitely at 50 power daylight balance with no need for the fan to kick in at all at normal room temperature with a current draw maximum of just 120 watts although heated up enough the fan gets a little too loud for my taste but getting into it a the aos ii does not defy the laws of physics nor math which is to say as i've just implied there is no substitute for surface area if you want a soft enveloping light there is nothing magical about the standard dome diffuser that comes with it a one by one circle does not have the same surface area as a one by one square never mind a 36 inch or 48 inch soft box or a 4x4 scrim and with a mostly all plastic housing with complex electronics inside it is not something to cavalierly throw into a grip truck expecting it to take hits the way a much simpler older hmi style light can and does or take out into the rain b the eos 2 does not defy the truism that nothing is perfect there is room for a number of small but meaningful improvements that given the care the company is clearly taking with the rest of the light's design are a bit surprising actually i'm talking about one a non-locking cable that would sometimes catch on the anodyne yoke sometimes detached just from the weight of the brick pulling on the too short cable yes i know gaff or tape velcro blah blah blah but still there should be some kind of quick release light stand mount or at least a longer cable two an on off switch location and operation that make one-handed control more difficult than necessary three the ability to display output and f-stops in addition to percentage that would be nice and four a method for attaching the diffuser dome which is not nearly as well thought out as the rest of the light hold that thought see there are a number of very interesting things i have not been able to try out yet because they aren't available yet from the smartphone app to their electronically variable diffusion smart softbox and their bowens mount adapter and i do have questions about how each of these will work in practice i mean how reliable and quick to connect for example will the smartphone app really be how much difference will the variable electronic diffuser actually make given that it is likely i assume to have approximately the same as or only marginally larger surface area than the included passive diffuser dome perhaps even more importantly will the bowens mount adapter work in such a way that the as2 will have to fit inside a softbox where i imagine thermal management will quickly become much more of an issue the larger issue that these last two questions imply i think they thought i just asked you to hold really is perhaps the largest issue of all an issue shared by every led panel i've ever tested and that is light modifiers put differently i've yet to see an led panel from anyone that offers the breadth and depth of light modifiers available to single chip onboard led monolights from sufficiently large soft boxes to snoots gobos and more and in this i think i'm seeing a missed opportunity which is to say modifiers designed specifically for the aos 2's unique form factor everything from super lightweight large surface area diffusers to variable aperture snoots which attach to the aos 2 with say magnets or a very robust steel ring adapter with an opening as wide as the light itself within which to secure the light to custom equally large diameter modifiers the weight of those modifiers and the light borne by the ring itself rather than the plastic house light itself but hey maybe i've got this all wrong or you don't mind carrying say a 4x4 scrim gym kit with extra stand we will find out soon enough i hope d in any case you do have to ask yourself if a combination continuous led flash unit is better or more cost effective for you and your use cases than separate purpose-built lights which to wrap it up and recap for now is to say first the eos 2 as i said at the outset is fascinating and intriguing with output quality quantity and flexibility which could meet all of our needs with a single unit yet it strikes me that its constellation of capabilities is so diverse so unique in my experience that its best and highest use will likely be recognized only by those of us who truly have a matching constellation of needs to my surprise for example i suspect that there are youtubers like me who rely on led lighting every week but rarely use flash except for portraits usually in service of testing other gear like lenses as i did recently the eos 2 just might be the perfect tool for this set of use cases so i will be using this a lot it might be ideal for an event photographer the key decision points probably being how diffuse you want the light to be how much time you want to spend attaching light modifiers to it that is fuzzing and most importantly of all whether or not you have an assistant with you to serve as a human c-stand and oh yeah whether you're responsible or not for photos and video second the eos 2 arrives on the scene straddling two very competitive markets continuous lighting and flash crowded with and increasingly dominated by companies that didn't exist 20 years ago led lights per se are no longer novel but instead the new normal there are a couple of manufacturers in particular who are really pushing the quantity quality feature said value envelope of the continuous led space though none comes to mind that brings all of the things to the table that the eos 2 does at the price separately or in combination so finally with all of this said i am really looking forward to seeing and working with a production unit and all of the accoutrement i haven't been able to get my hands on thus far asap hold that thought if you like what you've seen here today 9. Rotolight NEO 3: Small Yet Powerful LED Light | Hands-on Review
hey jake with b h and today we're taking a look at a new powerful yet compact led light from rotor light the neo three what makes the neo3 so impressive is its ability to operate as a continuous on-camera light or as a strobe light utilizing rgbw led technology the neo3 builds on the power from its predecessor and can produce 5440 lux at three feet while in continuous mode in strobe mode the neo-3 can take advantage of the rgb rgbw led technology and produce flashes in an eye-popping 16.7 million colors most traditional strobe lights produce flashes in daylight only so you have to gel them to get any kind of variation the neo opens up a whole world of color for strobe shooting let's take a closer look at the neo 3 and see what else it has to offer for such a compact light the neo3 packs a huge punch in terms of power while the light can produce 5440 continuous lux at three feet making it the most powerful on-camera light for its size it can produce 10 700 lux in strobe mode at three feet in continuous mode the light can be adjusted from 3 000 to 10 000 kelvin in cct mode giving you a wide latitude of solutions for creating warm tungsten bulbs to cool cloudy daylight the cri is 95 and the tlci is 99 so you're getting very accurate color reproduction if you're looking for a more specific color you can put the light into rgb mode and choose from up to 16.7 million color variations if you want to push your options even further there are 2 500 built in digital filters the neo 3 also features 14 unique special effects to choose from including fire light paparazzi lightning and tv on the strobe side the neo-3 can take full advantage of the rgb www leds and digital filters to achieve millions of color options and because the strobe is powered by leds there is no recycle time having to wait for the light to recharge between flashes the neo 3 can also utilize high speed sync or hhs up to 1 8 000 of a second having this versatility and such a compact light gives you more power and the ability to freeze action when you need to triggering the light can be done via the 3.5 millimeter sync port or you can pair your camera to the built-in ln chrome sky port wireless flash receiver so there are no cables to worry about physically the light is small with a width of 145 millimeters and a thickness of 50 millimeters it weighs 354 grams or roughly 0.78 pounds it has a narrow beam angle of just 50 degrees there is a bright and intuitive colored touchscreen display on the back of the unit for easy navigation and choice selection below the screen are two large red knobs for controlling color and brightness the previous model the neo2 ran on double a batteries but the neo 3 utilizes the popular npf 750 type rechargeable battery for longer use if you're looking to modify the neo 3 rhodolite has some options the rotor light bones s-mount and universal speed ring adapters allow for the attachment of a wide range of bones mount modifiers an additional feature that is quite useful is the integrated wi-fi and bluetooth technology this allows for seamless pairing with the new roto-light app from the app you can control lighting modes adjust color power levels flash settings and more so there you have it the neo 3 by rotolight is a compact lightweight extremely diverse strobe and continuous rgb ww led light the only limit is your creativity what do you plan on creating with the new neo3 from rotolight let me know in the comments below i'm jake with b h just keep rolling [Music]

through this presentation and after I go through the presentation which isn't going to be very very long I don't like to talk to people a lot I like to talk with so I'm going to go through and do this presentation real quick give you some feedback we also have a very exciting announcement for existing rodolite users that I'm going to get to in just a bit so this is not just about the new Pro Line um and just a keep it real with you guys my job on this campaign is to produce content I'm not getting a commission on this campaign and I only mention that because I am admitted to making sure that you're ready all right I don't hear any talking now so that's good so it looks as if we're in good shape so um yeah again just keep your just keep your um please just keep I'm just going to start over please just keep your um questions until the end at that point I'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions um as I previously stated I'm really here to help you all of you out there in rhodolite land again somebody who's been using the rhodolite you know and and pushing rhodolite and it's technology longer than anybody I am very committed to uh to working with them I do love the rhodolite team but more than anything um I wouldn't be here without you guys you would wrote a light and so we understand that commitment we want to make sure that we do everything on our on our end to help you be successful and to be happy I want you to be happy because one of the biggest things that that happened when a new product comes out is people are like um what about my existing products the stuff I've just bought so at any rate we're going to get to that I'm gonna share my screen with all of you and we're going to go from there so um this is about going pro with rhodolite um we've um wrote Let's just announced these lights I am very excited about these lights they they do provide some some Innovation and some technologies honestly no other lighting system offers um and I'm I'm very excited to be able to talk about these and and more importantly answer your questions those of you on that that are watching this you've honestly already seen the launch videos I'm not here to to redo the launch screen say as much as I'm here to help you uh with your questions and help you understand where we're going with all of these things as you know the thing that excited me the most was the compatibility of these lights with godox and others others I think pixapro profoto newer um but let's be real I mean the vast majority of us in the marketplace who do use traditional flash we use godox so I mean everything that I'm going to say about godox applies to all of the others so I just want to make sure that that's very clear but at the same time um you know let's again I I don't have a pure stat on this but I say that probably 80 to 85 percent of the marketplace who use traditional flash would have these godox and so um because of that this was a big push for us I've been talking about for a long time you can ask Rod I've been talking to him for a long time about godox and compatibility and to be able to be able to merge and marry these systems together and I'll be honest with you that's that's a big ask it's a big ask to do that because you're asking someone to actually actually be you know friendly in a sense with with the competitor from a compatibility standpoint and where I really got the idea for this to be honest was when I transferred my my work over to Sony and at the time Sony mirrorless had so few lenses the fact that there were adapters that enabled us to use Canon lenses with this with the Sony uh bodies was fantastic and so there is compatibility I want to make sure I answer all of the questions out there about this compatibility and also about um what the existing users do so let me explain this a little bit um there we go for existing users in case anybody doesn't remember and if you do that's fantastic but on the back of all of your rhodolites well not all of them but then all of the newer ones pretty much 2017 and newer you'll see a PC sync port and I just did a video on this yesterday you can take a a receiver and I went to the local camera store here and bought a receiver for 45 dollars guys a godox receiver if you put a PC sync cable and actually comes with the receiver of godox and put it into the back of your existing aos2 or neo3 you can fire your existing AOS tour neo3 or even neo2 or Titan or you can fire those with your um you can fire those with your rotolite and you can fire those when you when you use a godox transmitter because that signal from the transmitter goes right to the receiver and strobes the light so I did a video on this the picture you're looking at now is a picture of the godox has my key light on is an EOS 2 Pro and on the the blue light that's casting the light above on the door is a neo3 not the neo3 pro but a neo3 original so I just recorded a video yesterday showing you how to merge all of these three systems together because I want to make sure that existing rotolite users feel that they're valued and that you know we have your best interests at heart as well um along those lines I need you to understand this what rhodolite did was more than just a former update they actually put those Tran those those receivers physically into the new lights the new pro version line of Lights actually has a receiver a physical receiver from profoto newer pixapro and godox inside of the light and so that's what enables it to do that so this is more than just a firmware update and it's important that everybody out there understands that mute yourselves guys I'm sorry we can't have nice things all right I'll have to mute everybody here we go I've muted everybody but please guys keep it keep it uh keep it good all right so um now as it relates to um I'm trying to get the new thing off all right guys please mute yourself this this is a very easy thing to do please mute yourself all right so as it relates to um the new announcement the new announcement from rhodolite is very cool and what it is is this if you buy a pro version light and this is this is discussions that we've had I I reached out to rod and spoke to him about this and I said look I don't want the existing per the people who've purchased these lights to feel like you know they're they've their their gear is Obsolete and so if you buy a pro version light what rhodolite has done is sent just since over the last couple of days since announcing this what they've done is they've gone and work with the engineering team and I know what you guys are thinking like how do they do this so fast well they listen and and they listen to my feedback and they listen to your feedback and they read the comments I know Rob reads the comments and they look at what you guys are saying out there and ladies and they they do their best to respond to it which I really appreciate so what they're doing now is if you buy a pro version light because the receiver is built inside of these pro version lights in all of the pre-existing lights like the aos2 the neo3 there's Ellen Chrome chips or receivers built inside of those lights so through some freaking magic they're now making these talk so if you use like a godox transmitter and you fire your lightwear Pro Photo and you fire and uh an EOS 2 Pro um it will act as a master and it will slave your other um your other lights your other like anything 2017 or newer on your rotolite system so a neo2 neo3 EOS 2 AOS one um Anova Pro Titan I mean you can really kind of go Haywire I have some friends Steve other people who have a ton of lights they almost have more than I do and for people like that who just want all of your system to talk and strobe and you still want to be able to use the codeox that's that's now possible and and I'm going to be doing a video on that next week to show all of that to you um also one thing to understand my friends is please understand this when you're strobing with a godox or profoto or other transmitter please understand that you are not able to change the flash output or the power settings on your light so if you're still only able to do that with an Ellen Chrome transmitter so you know like when you're playing with the godox you know you're you're going to strobe that it's just going to strobe it it's not going to change your power so um just understand that as well um but when I use rhodolites I always throw them at full power anyways so it really doesn't matter to be honest but um but that's how it works so it's it's a receiver built inside and that's what enables them to be able to now introduce this uh I think will be really cool all right some people have no idea I love it when everything else the the other thing that you let me do this I'm just gonna have to mute everyone and be really clear about it okay there we go I will not allow purchases themselves there we go all right Daddy had to step them all right so um now we will go back to the regularly scheduled programming all right so um now um the other thing that red light is announced is the master presets presets are really cool um I'm a big fan of efficiency as many of you may know and because of that it gives it actually makes me very happy to be able to use some of some of these presets and the reason for that is um especially if you're a newer photographer some of the presets or some of the options are almost too much um when you have you know 16 million colors and gels and filters and where do you go what do you do um and as an example like the light you see behind me this blue this like baby blue I love this coming out of out of the rhodolite so this is something that you'll see in my master preset list it's the baby blue that I use in the picture that you're looking at right now um I love these kinds of things to be able to um bring people together and so um these presets enable you to get to your work faster I love the fact that they have built-in presets tungsten and daylight and and uh 40 you know 4600 Kelvin all of these together so you can quickly get on scene and you're like you know what this is what I love boom you hit the preset and you go I think the this is also a great way for people to be able to understand what they like because again if you're a newer photographer and if you're newer to lighting it really is overwhelming and so having a great starting point and then building on that is I think what all of us do when we're learning photography we we have to have some place where we're grounded where we can start as our base and then we grow from there and so um I think that this will be something that people can really gravitate to and I also think that um it will help photographers to build their own presets which ultimately is really what you want to do right like it's really cool to see what a master of light um you know someone like me or some of the other guys out there and ladies and directors of Photography and all these all these really talented people it's great to see what we use but ultimately you want to find what works best for you fine art get works for you find our preset that works for you and so because of that I think that when you have some really nice starting points from from all of us out there who've been doing this for a while it also gives you a great understanding as to where you want to head with your own work and I think ultimately that's where all of us want to be so I'm excited about that and I hope you guys are too um that's something that I really like is more durable handles and knobs on the on the new pro version of Lights um it goes without saying if you guys have followed me for any extent of time it goes without saying that you know I'm I'm pretty hard on gear and so because of that it's a very um important that we're able to have gear that actually will stand up to you know the rigors of what we do so I can tell you from having used them um here's here's the pro right here um The Knobs really are nice I mean I know it sounds like you're like you know they're just knobs but you know what they really are nice and they feel a lot more durable they look a lot better I'm not gonna lie and I really do like the red I like the red handles I like the red knobs um they really are um a welcome addition and I think in a pro level line of of of gear I think that that is uh I think that that's definitely appropriate I think if they came out with a pro version line of gear that that didn't have this I think that that it uh it wouldn't be uh the right way to go so I'm very excited about that as well um it's it's it's something that's important it's not the end-all but it is important and I think that it's good and it just gives a finer look at I mean even even especially on the neo3 and on the EOS 2 as well but it gives it a more refined look and especially when you're out there shooting it makes you makes you proud of the gear that you're using and we all know that that that's that's important to us as photographers increase power one thing that I want to help people understand is how the power The increased power works with the lights um there isn't any increased power from a flash perspective so again this is something that if you're an existing aos2 or neo3 user um the the pro version lights are not providing any more light as a flash option as a continuous option and I yes little old me I went out and bought a light meter believe it or not and I've been playing with the lights um in in certain color temperatures um there is an increased power output at 4 600 Kelvin that's where the maximum output is on these lights and so when you're using the light um from a continuous standpoint at 4600 Kelvin it's going to push a little bit more light out um and I want to make sure that I'm clear on that I want to make sure everybody understands um so that's only going to be in continuous mode now there are three different color temperatures I think it's 3200 40 650 600 I believe is the other one it could be off on that last one but um maybe 5800 but regardless there are three specific color temperatures where you're getting a brighter output in continuous mode um but um the brightest is at that 4 600 Kelvin that's where you're going to get that 20 to 25 percent more additional power at the other temperatures that I mentioned um it's maybe nine ten percent so if you plan on using rhodolites as a flash option just understand that you're going to get out of the proline which you're getting out of the current line and I say that not to speak ill of the proline at all I say that because again if you just went and bought a bunch of rhodolites your your money's not wasted and I want to make sure everybody understands that I think in my opinion where the pro lineup of Lights really comes into play is for a people who have been waiting to see if rhodolite's a good option for them I have a lot of friends who I one of them is on here Randy he's a Pro Photo guy and he's been talking to me on and off about rhodolite and switching over from profoto for a long time but it's hard when you're like uh how do I strobe them how do I do this how do I do that that's why I think if you are somebody who's who's moving over or migrating over to the road light system that's where the pro lineup really makes sense from a road life perspective red light is not discontinuing their existing lines so if you have an aos2 or neo3 it's not being discontinued um this isn't a replacement it's it's an additional level of of lighting it's for the people who don't want to use a manual trigger and if you do want to use a manual trigger and then you're going to love what you currently have if you don't want to mess with manual you know receivers and and hooking them up to your light then you're going to want something from the pro lineup um the recent announcement that I just made not recent just I made it five minutes ago but the announcement that I just made is is the one thing that's very enticing in my opinion for existing road light users to buy at least one pro like because if you buy at least one now you can trigger all of your other lights with just one so if you use one pro light now it'll trigger all of the others the one prologue will act as a master and the other uh rhodolites will act as a slave that's really really cool so um I hope that that helps um again I didn't want to make this a big sales pitch I wanted to talk to you about my experience with the gear um and and take it from there so I have lots of videos coming out again my role in this campaign is to really provide information and content and I'm very excited to be part of it I'm very excited that um that that rhodolite is is continuing to innovate and and for all of the photographers out there guys I know stuff it's tough you buy stuff and you're like oh my gosh they got new stuff um but the way that I kind of look at it is this would you rather have a company that innovates quickly or never innovates um the companies that or innovates very slowly I mean I'm not saying I'm not trying to you know talk bad about anybody but I mean that's that's kind of what happened with mirrorless but photographer cameras I mean somebody was innovating so quickly and Canon and icon lagged behind now can I kind of caught up we've all we all know that story but that's what happens when you don't innovate quickly and so I think that that's the big you know appeal to photographers out there is is we want we want two things I just thought about we really want two things we want companies that innovate quickly but don't forget the ones who purchased and made those companies able to innovate because we don't want to pay all this money these companies and then they innovate and forget about us and then okay now you can buy something new something new something new so that's why you know even since the launch I've had discussions with Rod about this I said hey we've got to really try to find a way to incorporate existing users into this this this whole big thing that's coming up this Pro Line and so I really am excited about the Master Slave um compatibility and being able to do that so I'm getting a lot of questions from people out there should I get a pro light and I think this makes it even easier to say yes because of the fact that it's integrating and incorporating all of your lights together to me that's very exciting I honestly wish I could have spoke about that at the launch but I will have a video coming out about that next week but I wanted to be able to sure I wanted to make sure that I mentioned it right now with all of you so at any rate um I am going to open it up to questions I will answer anything you guys know the way I am there's going to be no BS I'll answer any questions you have I'll give you my Straight Up approach because I never ever want someone to get their hands on something that I talk about and say that was that was Bull that was bull crap I always want to be able to share I always want to make sure that I give uh you guys a straight up truth so with that being said I am going to stop sharing my screen and I'm going to um I'm gonna stop sharing my screen and I'm going to go here and open it up to any and all questions that you guys is having now um I will uh enable you guys let me see here uh let me go here and try to unmute you guys all right you guys can now mute yourselves so um what questions do you have I don't know how you want to do this I'm just raising my hands is that you Carrie that's me what's up oh man Carrie and I have traveled through New York and done some crazy stuff together what's up my man what's your question um so if I'm correct from what I'm understanding the neo3 the first one that came out there's really not that much of a difference other than you can use a goldax trigger with the pro line right well you can still use a godox trigger with your neo3 you just have to use a manual a manual receiver like I spoke about in the presence yeah so what I do just what I do with my godox rights and Rhoda like I use them both together I put one transmitter on top of the other on top of the camera and it fires everything so yeah but the question is the neo3 as far as the brightness a friend of mine and I will go back and forth on this the neo3 compared to the ad200 or the ad300 or the ad400 is the neo3 brighter I've seen it with you in New York from the last shoot like you did in New York but and I know the idea I know the neo3 would be if not brighter than 8200 all day long but where is it compared to the 300 or the 400 because I know you have I think you have the six or the four where does where is it is it brighter is it what the Neo three no it is not farther than 8400 no what is it compatible is it would you say it's almost the same as the 300 well again Carrie you've heard you've heard me speak about this but other people may not have so I'll address it here please understand that we have when we talk about Power and Light we have to talk about usable light when you when you look at an 8200 8400 those lights cannot be used bare bolt whereas you can with the road light right for example I'm being lit right now by the aos2 pro and I'm at what am I at 15 percent 12 and um and so uh you know you can't do that with those kinds of Lights um so when what I really should do is take out and uh take out the godox lights and and put all of the diffusion on them to make it usable light and then run some light meter tests and compare it to rhodolite uh to help you guys out but um I'm asking a question because I'm torn between do I get a neo3 as a first one I have the original Neo tools you know I think my flashlight and my phone's brighter but do I get a neo3 or do I get the AOS too so I'm kind of torn I mean obviously with me budget is everything right now but I'm like what would you suggest I mean I mean I would get a nails too I'm always going to choose something with more power well yeah wait we know that but your neo3 in New York did beautiful yeah are amazing thank you it it it is the new three is an amazing night you just have to choose what works best for you but I mean you said should I get a neo3 or an aos2 I mean if you really have the option of choosing between one or another I would get the arrows too okay I'll let someone else ask thank you all right thanks care I appreciate you who's next Jason I had a quick question what's up Steve hey buddy how you doing good brother you know I have a bunch of rhodolites I think you have the most in the world except for me and and road light headquarters so I bought the ales too so uh you know they could all talk to each other but is that gonna be released soon or I I think it's what quarter four when it's gonna I don't I wasn't sure if that was the app or when the likes could all talk to each other that's a great question I need to get an update from rhodolite on that I don't know if Rod's on here but I mean that's a great question and that's something that we should have answered um but yeah I think because what you're talking about is exactly in line with what we're speaking about with the pro version Lights I've been told that I'm going to receive an update a firmware update for me to be able to test this next week so if that's if that's happening then that I would I'm I'm making some assumptions here but I should be able to uh I should be able to do that and so hopefully um we'll be able to get that done because I know the fourth quarter of the app they're supposed to all communicate but then if you wanted to use the lights to use one as a slave and then if the godox is if we get a pro one and the godox talks to is it going to be on release date or is it going to be in a different quarter just so we're all prepared for it um that's another good question um I would imagine I mean again this is my assumption but I would imagine that since I'll be using it next week it's not technology that is being developed it's technology that's completed and so that being the case I would imagine that that would be available on all the lights once they are delivered once they start shipping next year awesome thank you one one uh last question color temperature is it 4 600. I'm not sure what that is the respect to the godox too much but that we could just fire them all at the same color so it doesn't yeah I mean that's another thing I can get answered for you I mean I got to look at that I believe it is but um I mean if you look at the shots that I'm playing with it's to me it's pretty amazing how the lights uh work seamlessly together and it's it's funny the other reason I've been shooting a lot with the godox and the rhodolites um is because people always say how do I marry these because people have a hard time some people have a hard time doing that and so I'm trying to do my best to uh to show people how to get it done Perfect all right thank you so much you're welcome hey Jason yeah I think that the um the neo3 I believe it's brighter than the original EOS is that been your experience yeah I'd say so yeah because I'm I've got a I bought a two pack of the a Oaks before the twos and threes came out so I think I may sell those and buy two of these neo3 Pros yeah um there they're quite a bit bit what kind of work do you do Dave uh portrait yeah I mean do you do indoor outdoor oh but um I'd have a studio so I'm in Indiana and it depends on the weather but uh I do both but I've used a single neo3 to do a senior photo shoot oh no on a cloudy day so yeah again if you're the kind of person who uses a lot of a lot of two two three light setups then you would yeah you'd want to go with two neo3s if if you you know don't need to have a lot of if you're primarily somebody who wants a stronger key light than you'd go for an EOS too but uh but yeah I mean the the um that's why I have two Neo threes and the two light original AOS okay I'm thinking of replacing those two EOS with uh a couple of neo3s well to be honest if I were you I if you already you said you already have neo3s I've got two neo3s yes now if you have two neo3s I would actually sell your AOS ones and get either an aos2 or an aos2 Pro that would be a better move in my opinion all right thank you okay oh forget it I was gonna ask again with the AOS Tool Pro or dios2 again compared to the to the ad300 or the ad400 but you answered that before it's how it's going to be used I'm using the ads as some kind of a benchmark because I know what the power you can you know the power he puts out right I have uh did you bring your no yeah I think you had the yellows too with you but I don't think you use it so I'm kind of actually I need to see that in person I need to see that looks like I'm making a trip to B H or something soon yeah make a trip well the AST you're gonna have to find an Adorama but yeah take a look who's next I can I bounce in bounce in what's up Catherine uh hey uh I know long time no no chat right it's all good up here in Maine um just bouncing over to the presets um that's something I would probably just play with for fun um there's always you know learning growing no matter what our style is um as far as the uh format Lightroom Photoshop capture one uh what direction are we going here foreign for editing purposes right now I'm using like all the pictures I just showed you um I use I I pull all of them in through through Lightroom I then um if I have to do any frequency separation or any fine tuning on skin then I do that in Photoshop but then the the toning and the uh the finished product look comes from actually using luminar AI wow okay yeah luminar is trying to sponsor me so I'm I'm trying to see I've been using luminar for like a year and a half but um I like it obviously I mean yeah obviously but yeah no no it's good stuff dude so that that's actually my you know um my workflow and and there's many people on here Steve's one of them who who are on my patreon channel and they watch me edit live they'll tell you I've been using luminar for a while as far as the master presets with wrote away well the master presets well okay maybe I misunderstood your question um in regards to the presets I mean are you talking about how because didn't you say Lightroom or did I must understand you no I I I was confused I wasn't sure if they were preset um for the lighting or preset for the editing great question my bad um the presets are for the lighting and so you can go in you can yeah my bad sorry you can hear my Jason you're going off on the stupid stuff um the precessor for the lighting and so in other words you go on and you just click a button and it tells you exactly what I use what other masters of light use and or it just has the presets for certain you know colors or temperatures or just to make it much faster to use thank you you're welcome good seeing you again who's next Jason yes um I I get kind of confused by everybody getting so upset about the new versions coming out so fast because in general what I'm seeing is that we've got an incremental Improvement to the lights they're a little more rugged they have a few more features by the way of the presets but we can add those back into our old lights um and the only real Improvement appears to be maybe a third to a stopper less of light and continuous time um I love the metal knobs I love the look of the lights so I I don't see it as a as a huge change um what I what I can understand is the integration but many of us have already done that in the past manually so right um what I looked at it is if you're coming in new for the crowd it sort of makes life easier for you integrating your existing equipment if you're already there there's nothing wrong with the the older lights no and and you're right and so I I I've always made a pledge to myself and my followers to to always keep your thoughts and to never forget you know where I started and I do understand when people get upset when new gear gets comes out it doesn't matter from like first or for for someone else I mean let's be real it's like it's it's expensive Gear's expensive and so you want to make sure that your your investment wasn't for naught um that being said um I think that's why I'm doing my best to help people understand how to use what they currently have and to make sure people understand that what they currently have is still incredible um while also showing people hey here's here's an upgrade option um on the you know previous you know lights that were released but it doesn't mean that your current lights don't kick ass they do uh it just gives you a little bit more of a kick-ass light but I mean the lights that we just got done over the last year showing you guys and marketing and touring and those lights still kick ass so nobody wasted any money your lights are still amazing um I think yeah in the uh fourth quarter and we can back integrate some of our older whites it'll even be better yeah there's just more and more Innovation coming and I'm I'm excited about it again I'd rather I'd rather forget about being sponsored I wrote a lot I'd rather I'd rather use um I'd rather use gear that innovates quickly versus gear that doesn't innovate quickly at all so that's where I'm at on it I can't be in another company that during the course of the pandemic did what Rod Daniels did we brought away I mean he basically six bucks the hundred percent of the pandemic when everybody else was pretty much killed and we were we worked very hard it's a team effort we worked very hard it wasn't easy but we're glad we made it through it so thank you all right who's next are you are you are trying to talk to me I'd like to if I could hit me baby well first of all thank you so very much for all of the great video and information you provide let me give a special shout out to the gentleman that was on before me Mr Atwell he is a very wonderful member of our rhodolite group and very helpful uh can I just ask you something a just a tad off off topic but uh I have uh just a quick question also um I already own the neo3 I have an Eros one and I just recently purchased the Titan X1 right now uh it looks you know I'm the information that I'm getting from YouTube and from you know your videos and some of the people like Robert is that you know it's a grand light and there's no question in my mind that that will be the case I'm just wondering for outdoor location use and again I'm not talking about fighting the sun in midday and I'm talking about using subdued lighting uh what do you think as far as comparison of uh Flash and continuous light output between the AOS one and this Titan X1 will be for myself well the Titan X1 is exponentially brighter than the EOS one um now if you compare the Titan X1 versus the aos2 that's a different ball game but versus the EOS one yeah you're going to notice a significant increase in power and the other thing that I've always loved about the Titan line of Lights is the fact I love the the built-in smart diffusion it's beautiful I I love it and I'm excited to use it with the ao's lineup of Lights as well because I absolutely love it yeah I think that that's what kind of pushed me into the light that smart diffusion because if I bought the ao's uh two then I would have spent the money for the other diffuser the electronic diffuser that came out also right how about as far as catch light goes because I know that you use both lights for your uh uh your photography still work also and what do you think about the difference in the catch light is being Square compared to round any Advantage One Way or Another in your mind that's just a personal preference to be honest I mean we can all talk about which one is better but you're the Creator you look at your shop you you decide what you like is better that's just the honest because some people argue I've always loved Brown caps like because it mimics you know the the shape of the eye but you know then people will talk all the live long day about how a square or a rectangular light will mimic window light so um at the end of the day it really depends on what you like find the right catch light that works for you okay well listen I want to just thank you again for all of the help that you've given all of us and I've been to uh your seminar that you had in Miami it was fantastic I have pictures that my friends are still going crazy about even though it was a couple months ago so thank you for your help I appreciate that hey thanks for your support I love you and I appreciate you man thank you [Music] that's too funny what else guys what other questions do you have and ladies I see we have some lovely ladies on here as well what other questions do you have if there's no further questions I will wrap her up oh Paul Paul you ready to go okay I'm in the UK um although I've learned a lot from some of the other masters of life I must have made the vast majority of my knowledge of late with Road colitis come from you so thank you for that well thank you when you're coming back to the UK I knew that was coming I knew it um I'll be coming next year it's been too long since I've been there um obviously I was there a year ago with the last rhodolite campaign but um I plan on coming back there just on my own um place I plan on coming back there just on my own um next year to answer your question it's been too long since I've done any workshops there I haven't had a workshop in the UK for many years obviously because of covid but I haven't done one in the UK for many years and so I know that there's a big appetite appetite from you guys out there and uh I'm gonna come and feed you definitely what we will thank you very much thank you brother I appreciate you when is New York New Jersey going to see you again dude I was there like three months ago not too long it'll be it'll be a couple months it'll be next year it'll be next year has to warm up okay what's up Henry uh what question I'm trying to buy um the three light uh Neo three setup but um I go through your offers but when it goes to bmh or Adorama it doesn't give me the space to put in your coupon yeah um that's honestly been one of the biggest struggles with doing it that way to be honest um that's a rhodolite question and I'm not trying to pawn you off I have no clue as to um why that happens but that's that I've been receiving that feedback a bit over the last number of months so you're not able to use the promo code is what you're saying right well I go through your uh road light offers then it dumps me back to be an age right I ordered to be an age but it doesn't give me a space to put in your coupon to get the extra 15 off have you called uh b h um yeah they're but as useful as tits on the board well I've never heard that one before but um um well then you know what I'll reach out to rhodolite send uh send rhodolite a message and copy me on it and we'll we'll see what's up but um that I I I really like that's a that's a logistical thing between b h and rhodolite I don't have any involvement in that to be candid but um but I want to make sure that we help you at the same time so send me an email Jason joppros.com and and send an email to cells rhodolite.com and um we'll get it done you know I'm just trying to save as much money as possible also I wanted to say thank you for all the uh nuggets of information that you've given me welcome photography has improved thousand fold well thank you you understand that you can send royalty checks to me okay we'll do that thank you oh brother take care take care Jason real quick uh when do the presets come out uh to update [Music] uh the presets of the new presets the new presets because I know I could buy the new presets to update my previous stuff that's a great question I don't have the answer for that I haven't asked rhodolite when they want to come out because I only have them on my on the pro version mice they sent me but um that's a great question I know rhodolite's gonna listen to this and they'll give us an answer but I don't know this unfortunately the answer cool who's next Who's Next Up On The Hotline uh Tom from rhodolite says it'll be January foreign regards to the preset question what other questions do you have Jason I had one more question hit me Baby Boy for the needle threes they're like a sweet spot to keep the fan off like 80 percent I don't don't go over 80 if you don't want that man okay that don't go over 80 and that that fan um is vital so um if you go over 80 that fan has to kick on to keep the lights cooler or they will not stay cool and you you definitely want your lives to stay cool um and that's not just a real life thing when I use Stella they're they're the same thing when I would when I would go up on the light um any anything from a higher power consumption over like 50 60 on the Stella the fan will kick on so um that's that's that's what I would do but again I know the way that I always look at things and I've always used rhodolite this way if I ever have to go at 100 power on continuous then I'm just going to strobe it you know unless you're doing video work but if you're a photographer if I'm doing you know any sort of work that I need lighting and unless I'm doing again video work if I'm doing just Stills I'm always going to kick it into Flash versus continuous because the flash conserves my battery many people don't appreciate that as much as I think it should be spoken about is once you put these lights into flash mode and you take them off the continuous so for just a little tip out there guys when you're using these lights you know don't just put it in flash mode and assume that's going to conserve power make sure that your modeling lamp on the light is turned down as well so that will conserve power on the rhodolites like crazy so I hope that helps it does thank you you're welcome my man one quick other question Jason I'm sorry um you're my sexy man from uh you're from San Francisco right from the Bay Area yeah yeah where's your green beard dude it's it's uh I cut it I cut it so I Gotta Die you're you're my lucky charm all right so what's your question so your recycle time is going to be different when you're shooting with your godox and you wrote right yep yep okay yep what I would really recommend to optimize results is to put your godox in about 164th to 1 32nd of a power and that's going to um that's going to improve the recycle time to where you're not having as many missed shots so a shoot that I did with Alyssa um earlier this week uh or last week whenever it was it was in the launch video I actually have some shots and it's kind of cool because the shots where the godox didn't fire you still have the rhodolites firing and so you have this it's a beautiful silhouette of her um and with just the purple and the blue or the pink and the blue behind her and she's silhouetted because the godox didn't fire it's actually kind of a cool shot but um but yeah no no doubt the Recycled time on the godox yeah they have their technology yeah thank you you're welcome what other questions do you guys have and ladies hey Chris Decker did I answer your question brother all right cool Jason just a quick question uh have have you played with the soft diffusion yet no I haven't no so that's something that I that I really want and I know that rhodolite wants to get it to me but they haven't sent it to me um yet they tried it I don't even get into it but um bottom line is that I am getting the soft diffusion well I mean yes I have on the Titan line of lights but I haven't played with the one for the aos2 um but as part of this campaign one of the goals is to get me that new smart diffuser uh so I can do a video on it in November or because I ordered the uh they had a package up as part of the new campaign that has an r90 and the soft diffuser added in together that are great price so I figured that was a good way for me to ask the gold pack some black campaign and hit sort of campaign so basically improved what I've got that's awesome and I think that's a great great point is that you know there are deals in there for those who bought from the last campaign to enhance what they bought it's not just you know there's a lot of accessory stuff in there so I think that that's great dude and the the with the power and stuff not being any really different on flash which is what I do an awful lot of times and that's what I really want to soften when I'm maxing that light out right right uh that that I figured that was one of the best ways to do it and then the 90s being a a parabolic sort of goes just the opposite focuses that light a little bit more and uh basically gets me a little more punch yep so uh between those two I saw when you were here and watched and and you use that 90 I was really impressed with that yeah the r90 the r90 and even if you guys look at the videos and stuff I've been putting out um that's all that I've even been putting on my godox so I mean that I I if I if I were looking at this scenario I see rhodolite coming for these other companies so if I was these other companies I'd be I'd be watching because I mean they're they're coming for them by by them they're making it by them mudding the waters if you will and coming into their territory it's makes it an interesting proposition for these other companies because I don't think these other companies are going to find ways to strobe a rhodolite uh I don't think that's going to happen and so I think it's really smart what they're doing just from a competitive standpoint well thanks and and I'll look forward to seeing the video on important yeah I look forward to getting it and playing with it myself so I'm sure rhodolite will send it to me as soon as they can okay what other questions do you beautiful people have hi Jason hi you remember me of course how could I forget you yeah this is me I'm since no questions I just want to say hi and I want to say like I really appreciate the last time remember like we had this um like Sunday Sunday before this one we had this Workshop yeah so I just want to say hi remember I told you like I'm working yeah you were with me in Indianapolis we had a great time yeah yeah so I'm inside the track um whenever I have time I just start editing pictures and then following chasing you everywhere well I appreciate that I love your money I love your support you start with the money that sells everything hey with money there's no honey but [Laughter] no man we had a great time in Indianapolis and speaking of that I'm going to be doing two events coming up here tomorrow actually in St Louis and in um then after that it's Nashville so we we have some great people coming I'm excited about it but thank I really thank you for coming we had a great time yeah thank you so much I got we got chased out by security so you know it was one of my events yeah yeah yeah it was good it was perfect it was a lot of fun yeah thank you brother thank you thank you so much take care you're welcome oh he got to see the new lights too now he anybody who comes to these events are seeing the new lights so he got to see him and that was a lot of fun all right guys any other questions comments concerns any requests for videos that you'd like me to do I'm gonna let this go on for about 30 seconds if I don't hear from everybody else oh my bad yeah thanks Rod um my bad um I'm gonna be doing um by the way thank you I slip a slip of my memory there uh I am going to be doing an event on in Los Angeles so if you're in Los Angeles and you want to come play with me I'm going to be doing a an event with rhodolite on November it's online November 6th yeah November 6th right yeah are you coming to that dude yes I plan on coming to that all right you're coming all the way from San Francisco I love it but um yeah join me in Los Angeles November six guys and then in Toronto um yeah and it's it's free of charge uh rhodolite's paying the bill on this so um you guys come on down it's it's free all you gotta do is go to jasonliner.com register and all of the links are there and then I'm doing Toronto uh because everybody's gonna be up there for profusion I'm doing Toronto two days later on the eighth so yeah make sure to join me on those dates uh then we have voting day on the 7th I think it is and then and then uh but yeah I'd love to see all of you there that'd be great Jason one more question buddy yeah brother go for it is the material in the r90 and the Westcott um different is the r90 material different than like the Westcott XXL you mean yeah um you know I've always been a big fan of the Westcott modifiers um and I still am but I will say I think the RR 90 is just tougher um it just is um one thing about the Westcott that has happened over the years is the Westcott is easier to set up and there's just no it's hands down the westcott's easier to set up by Design it's like an umbrella you push it open pop it open with the r90 and modifiers like that you have to pull each Rod out and then it folds up it's not the end of the world but the Westcott is easier to set up but I mentioned that because because it's easier to set up not if but when that modifier Falls like they do on me um I have 10 it's been uh it's it's happened more often than not that I break and bend some of the uh inner workings of the metal rods that are inside of the uh westcop because it is built more like an umbrella from an internal standpoint so it does break easier so just yesterday we were filming the wind really picked up here in St Louis the r90 fell over with the godox on it so it was Heavy picked it up and it didn't have any it wasn't any worse for the wearer so um now from the cloth material I'd say that the r90 material is thicker than the Westcott so I think you know I again I'm not gonna sit here and pretend that the what's caught isn't good stuff but is the r9d better yeah it is okay thank you yeah would love a video using Road lights to light larger groups approximately 20 people indoors says Paul Hancock yeah you know it's interesting Paul if you if I I made a video using the EOS 2 at a wedding uh and I put that up on YouTube that was about I don't know three four months ago and I did Flash I flashed um the aos2 and it was about 20 people the size of the wedding party um and that was Outdoors so um that would be something to take a look at as well Chris was there with me to help me yeah Uh Kevin says that I missed the information for people who own the neo3 already um maybe you did but just to reiterate and I'll be quick but if you own the neo3 already or the aos2 already if you get a pro version line of Lights rhodolite is now making it possible for those lights to communicate so you'd use the the pro version light as the master light and then you'd use any of your existing rodolite gear from 2017 or newer as a slave and so it would enable you to be able to strobe those other lights just from one transmitter which is pretty freaking awesome so and then really what you could do is that would be really cool because what you could do then is um use your stroke or excuse me use the rhodolite app and then you could just change all the different lights colors power that'd be really cool then you can do all of that just right from your app so you wouldn't even need to really have another transmitter if you're keeping it real so that that'd be kind of cool [Music] what other questions you guys have but is there some sort is there some is there may be some kind of a trade-up program um for the rhodolites I don't think there's a trade-out program now but I I do believe that if you what they're trying to do is if you if you're an existing road light user and you have a pro version like I think that could be wrong wrote like please correct me if I'm wrong on this but I believe that they're coming out with something where the rhodolite and I think Rod just wrote it so you can now buy one red light neo3 Pro or aos2 using the godox transmitter I'm almost labor every time yes but on top of that I think if you are an existing road light owner aos2 neo3 and you buy pro version like they're also giving you the presets for free um I think that's another thing that they're they're doing as well so what other questions do you guys have alrighty well I love you all very much um I have to go Traverse through some very uh dangerous neighborhoods and you do some fun shots because that's what I like to do for some crazy reason and uh it's I love St Louis I mean it's crazy here it is crazy but it's my kind of crazy so um at any rate I'm very grateful to all of you please let me know your feedback post your comments um I told you in the launch video that I would be listening to your comments and I would be reading them and replying to them and I most certainly am so make sure to um continue to do that make sure to continue to write your your comments are not in vain we are listening and your concerns complaints whatever they may be are very important to us and believe me um I'm very grateful that I have a voice within the rhodolite family and uh some they listen and I'm grateful for that so uh you gotta you gotta work with people and you got to buy gear from people who listen and I think that that's the most important thing out there people don't listen to you then that's when relationships fail so I'm grateful that they're listening to all of us so um until next time my lovely friends keeps you you never give up on your dreams finder that works for you and remember I looked up to why isn't that funny so until next time keep shooting never give up on your dreams trying to get the works you to remember you only have one chance to get it right I'll talk to you guys later bye
