1. The cheapest capture card money can buy.. is actually WORTH buying? (BlueAVS/Goodan USB 2.0 CamLink)
i was just talking recently about how i really think capture cards need to innovate better when it comes to affordability and then suddenly out of nowhere pops up this mysterious usb 2.0 capture card that everyone starts pinging me from different places to buy ebay amazon multiple amazon addresses actually aliexpress that is under a hundred dollars and in some cases it's only 15 or 20 or 30 or 50 someone recommended this to me in the comments and i picked it up based on that listing i paid 50 for it you can get it for 30 on amazon 18 or so on ebay and like 15 or 20 on aliexpress so what does the cheapest capture card money can buy i actually get you well turns out in some ways this beats out expensive capture cards today's capture card review is really confusing i don't really know what to think about it i this goes against most of my rules of capture cards and i i don't even know so this is my review of what i'm calling the cant link instead of the cam link it's a 16 to 50 cam link competitor that is pretty cool but also what today's capture card doesn't have a brand name i can't tell you the company that makes it it's available on amazon from blue avs as well as good and good and and then it's on ebay and aliexpress with no brand name whatsoever it's just the hdmi video capture and they're using the fancy hdmi logo even though they probably didn't actually pay to license that or anything such like that this is a usb 2.0 hdmi capture card that is made in the style of the cam link it even comes with a short usb extension cable much like the cam link and yeah usb 2.0 but at the same time the latency is just as low if not lower than usb 3.0 capture cards my mind is entirely blown by this little device again i picked it up i'll have multiple links to it in the description below as it seems every time i post a capture code review it goes out of stock and options are better than getting the cheapest version of it but this is a super tiny little capture card that's designed to be an alternative to the elgato cam link or any other uvc capture card it's uvc it comes in this nice little shroud it's going to struggle to fit in your usb ports you'll want to use this extension cable it supports up to 1080p 60 input no 4k support anything like that no 4k 30 support either and then you can capture either 720p60 or 1080p30 and so pretty weird there uh it's those specs are fairly limiting i would love to see higher specs obviously for the price whatever but this makes it the most affordable cam link alternative you could possibly buy it doesn't make any sense i even hooked it up to my main cameras had no problem using it as an actual camera capture card shows up in skype discord zoom whatever just fine the latency is pretty low so it works great for a camera you do have to set your camera manually to 1080p mode if you leave it on 4k mode it'll be like no sorry can't help you works pretty nice there it does only support mjpeg uh color encoding no yui 2 unless you drop down to 480p 30 fp or 480p i think even 60 fps is yui too but anything 720p is 60fps in mm jpeg 1080p is 30fps mjpeg as well but you do need to use the partial color range instead of full in obs where this cards gets really weird and interesting comes down to the latency this thing ties for second place in terms of the fastest capture card i've ever reviewed tying with the magewell loop through 4k pcie capture card with first place being of course the avermedia live gamer 4k this thing has an average of 48 milliseconds of latency to the obs preview and to more of a raw access of the video feed could have even lower of a preview latency as far down as 35 or so milliseconds which is just bonkers i don't understand this i have always said the past few years to not buy any usb 2.0 capture card mainly because most of them if they're usb 2.0 releasing in 2020 then they're just doing onboard compression and that made most of them the live gamer mini the older elgatos and so on have really high latency this one operates kind of how the past two capture cards i've reviewed which have usb 2.0 backwards compatibility it basically operates in that way and so it is extremely low latency like for that value it's insane in fact it is so low latency that i decided to hook it up even though it doesn't have pass-through if you use it with a game console you will want an hdmi splitter because even with how low latency it is playing from the preview isn't great but i wanted to see what it was like so i hooked it up full screen to my obs preview tried to play some halo 3 on master chief collection now it turns out you know i'm good enough at halo 3 that i was able to compensate and still carry my team almost to a win [Music] so [Music] [Music] but in doing so i certainly looked like i was playing drunk or something because that kind of latency just really throws off your aim in a reaction-based shooter platformer things like that wasn't pretty here's what gameplay looked like in 30 fps 1080p capture as well now at 720p60 you're getting full fluid frame rate it's fine for streaming to twitch or something like that when you're streaming probably in 720p anyway but when you're used as someone who's used to the higher end capture cards and things like that the 720p image compared to native 1080p 4k anything like that feels pretty soft now there's no washed outness the colors look pretty great it's just a very low resolution for 2020. but and when you can pay in some cases under 20 dollars you probably don't care if you're just using it for meetings or video calls you probably don't care now when i was trying to play off the preview at 720p 60 i kept feeling what felt like significant frame drops i think those were amplified through playing through the full screen preview and combined with the already existing input latency i think just kind of made it feel worse uh as when i ran it through the frame rate analyzer according to my my frame rate analyzer which isn't going to be 100 accurate i wasn't maintaining full 60fps but it's close enough that it probably was 60fps and like i said any potential drops were just amplified by the existing input latency of playing 48 milliseconds doesn't sound like a lot and it's great for audio syncing it makes things a lot easier but for actually playing off of can be pretty rough so i had originally completely ruled this out as a possibility but it turns out this capture card also works with the open source scan converter we're talking super nintendo 2x 3x 4x5x all ready to go without any issues changes between them super fast i'm so confused it even worked with the output from my smartphone my gaming phone downscaled it properly everything i i swear this capture card is magic i'm so confused now as i mentioned these capture cards popped up out of nowhere seemingly overnight and a lot of people started looking into them one including the person by the handle arsenio dev who actually started taking apart and looking at it from a hardware perspective and found that it has a macro silicon asic on it that isn't listed on their site we still don't know who's actually making the card itself but also found that it is you know up to normal uvc spec it supports all of the normal uvc formats and it seems to be reporting everything properly and he's the one who came up with the cantilink naming which i just absolutely love you got the cam link and the alternative the cantilink it does actually support hdcp handshake too you can't force any extra frame rates or anything to it of course again 1080p30 is your cap but that's fine for what this is they also just picked up there's a very similar looking usb 3.0 model from this which is not any more expensive uh they're looking into this it's out of stock so i can't get my hands on it just yet but i will try when i can because it's similarly priced but overall i don't really have anything else to say about this capture card it breaks my mind in terms of everything that i say about a capture card it is a less than 50 depending on where you're buying it usb 2.0 capture card then in 2020 i'm saying is probably what you should go for it is the cheapest capture card you can get your hands on it provides good quality it provides absurdly low latency and is a wonderful alternative to the elgato cam link so much so that i think most people looking into cam links especially given how expensive they are on the used market right now most of you have no reason to go past this so if you're looking for an option for a face cam for video conferencing or live streaming or meetings or whatever or you're looking for something for hooking up like a microscope camera or you're just looking to stream some gameplay and you also want to buy an hdmi splitter or you just want to pick up some screen capture of a raspberry pi or an older computer this is a phenomenal option as long as they remain on the market this is one of those where they're kind of remanufactured and resold under a bunch of different brand names they're going to sell out once they run out of the press you know they print no i say press like they're printing something but you know they make so many of these off of the same factory line they sell out and then once they're gone they're usually just gone forever but while they're still available for the bargain that they are this is phenomenal and i would recommend it i i i'm coming up with weird i'm struggling to come up with the right words to talk about this because i can't even give a name to it because it has no name it's a nameless capture card but yeah 1080p 30 720p60 1080p6 the input mjpeg 48 milliseconds of latency that's all for me if you enjoy this kind of content uh subscribe for more stream guides and tech education i'm eposvox extreme professor hit the like button go subscribe on floatplane for early access to videos and behind the scenes content and [Applause] i'll see you next time product links will be in the description below to both amazon's probably aliexpress and ebay see you
2. What Is a Video Capture Card and Do I NEED It?
hey everybody this is steve here from tech support taking a quick couple of minutes out from a busy day answering your phone calls got that thing on silent so hopefully none of you all need help in the next five minutes because you're not gonna get it just kidding we got guys on the other line so not to worry uh basically we've been getting a lot of questions about what do i do with the capture card do i need one what's the purpose basically these guys are going to take the signal from your camera convert them to usb so that you can record it on your computer manipulate it and stream it out online the first one here is the bg cap ha which is an hdmi to usb 3.0 capture card it's basically going to convert your signal out of your camera take it to your computer for recording it's also great for things like dvds other pcs if you want to do a desktop recording that kind of thing works great for that this guy is going to be a little bit more in a professional capacity maybe houses of worship are going to use something like this where they've got some long sdi runs they want to be able to convert those to usb to record onto their computer that's the one for you right here i've got this camera here set up all ready to go i already ran my wire so you don't have to watch me hopefully you appreciate that we'll start with the hdmi here basically these guys are really easy to hook up you just plug it into the hdmi input right here plug this to your usb and now i'm gonna jump over here to obs studio add my converter into obs studio i'm gonna click plus go to video capture device called converter now we get this pull down menu here i'm going to click there and select usb 3.0 hd video capture click ok and there it is so now i've got my hdmi connection feeding straight into my computer which has no hdmi inputs this will also capture the audio as well if you've got a source that has embedded audio in it we've got audio out and an audio in so we can embed our own choice of audio from an external device or output it to a separate audio mixer or audio system about all there is to that guy very easy our next one here the bgcsa sdi to usb 3.0 adapter got my sdi cable right here connect that to the sdi input i'm going to connect this now to my usb and go through the same process here for obs studio and same story i'm going to eliminate this guy add a new device video capture device once again i get my pull down menu and i'm going to select usb video capture and we should have an image and now here we are got live streaming video from the camera that pretty much covers everything there is to a capture card very simple device very easy to use anybody can do it also very important very useful so we hope you found that helpful and thanks for watching [Music]
3. $7 – EasyCAP USB2 Video Captures my 29 Year old VHS Tape – 693
[Music] hi and welcome to my Playhouse and today I'm gonna try and play with something called easy cap and this easy cap is something well it has a USB 2 port here and you can connect it and you can capture things this is for capturing old old old signals like from your good old video camera when we were talking VHS and stuff like that I recently had Uncle Joe from Uncle Joe's Playhouse capture a VHS tape for me in the United States because in the United States they run with another video system than we did or two over here we use the PAL system in Europe and in the US they use the NTSC video format so it was easier to have Uncle Joe just rip that VHS tape for me and just set the file over but it didn't mean that I didn't want to try this myself I have actually had video wrapping cards before I actually bought a really expensive one back in the days when this was fancy the one I had was using the is a bus in the old computer so that was before PCI and I paid $800 for that thing back then 850 dollars actually it was really awesome really expensive crashed all the time so today I'm gonna try this one this one came from China and it's like six dollars with shipping it comes well this is what you get you get a manual and this manual is for some wireless video receiver it doesn't it has nothing to do with the device itself then it comes with a little USB cable here that's just an extender so that you don't have to have this sitting in in the back of the computer you can extend it a little bit and you can put it off then it comes with a software CD a tiny little one and it actually also has a little serial number on the front there we might need that and I was gonna connect this to a computer and as this is some old stuff this will work on Windows XP and Windows 7 and some more which are Vista I don't think it will work on anything newer than that I couldn't find that anyone had tried this on newer pcs than Windows 7 so we're gonna be trying it on a Windows 7 I tried it yesterday on a Windows XP machine only to find out that it also requires a USB 2 port not a USB 1 port so so they re trying this so let's see let's go to the computer and install some stuff ok so I have a old Hewlett Packard laptop here which is running Windows 7 and we're gonna try and install the CD on that I was not sure if I well I was also thinking about installing it on this little C noble box over here which is a Windows 10 machine and for that I had copied it out to USB stick the data from the CD but as this computer actually does have a cd-rom drive we might as well try that it's I don't use that much there are months between when I use one of those and I'm guessing that it's maybe a little pop-up okay it's it's actually working each and it pops up with installed so we're gonna run the installation and it want some money are we okay with this oh you probably shouldn't be I haven't connected this computer to the Internet so yeah we get some languages let's pick English that's really the one that I lost fluid in in that selection anyway next this is just next next finish it agree to the license agreement [Music] it's pretty nice that it actually says that's exactly what I'm gonna be using it for I wanna have I do have some VHS tapes these good ol ones have some movies that I've never been able to find on the internet afterwards have them on VHS tapes I don't really need them to be on VHS tapes anymore so my idea is grab them and get rid of them this has probably well that was from back in the days when you know you went down to the local video store and rented a couple of movies and watch those and uh well we kind of made a copy for enjoying later so okay that installed so let's see what happens if we plug in this box I'll take the CD out we need that because they were so nice to deliver the serial number on there so let's pop this in see what happens I have a USB connection over here on the side there just find something so we got a new icon up here so let's see it wants the serial number so I'm gonna punch that in okay so we something here let's see options it sees our thing here so that is cool so now I need to put some kind of a signal into it and then for that we have dug up the old VHS tape machine over here so we will just have a little look at that this is I have had a lot of VHS tape machines and well when these were a thing this one I kept around just because it's it's a very simple machine and it it works it at least it worked when we were using it and this is a VHS and it's a pal superbly high-quality six hits in stereo blah blah blah on the back there's this was a really cheap machine I must admit that on the back it doesn't have much it has a couple of scan connections and tenor and audio out but I have a special cable for it here for this scan connection and this is one of those that you can can choose if the signal goes in or out with a long wire and it ends up in these colorful connections which component I'm not sure I think that might be the name for it so we're gonna go for the out and we're gonna put that in again video recorder this cable is way too long that's it's not good for the signal this is old analog crap you know so so long cables definitely not good so the cable from the video recorder we'll put that in yellow goes to yellow red red white white couldn't be any simpler than that so so far so good I'm very interested in if I press play over here if it's gonna show anything on my screen see that's that's China I found that the remote still works Oh my picture and I think what really wanted to share his ideas with humanity if only to give us Oh ATZ Lee's awesome this is I like time-traveling things so this is running against time it's old and it's about someone who tries to change time George and never been able to find it so I will be able to grab that so let's stop that again hey that's so cool I have another tape here this is this is from my mom's private collection or actually this is from my dad's private collection my dad is deceased so when he died I got this tape back this is from my confirmation here in Denmark it's normal that as a infant you get baptized like you the parents will on behalf of the child say that this child will believe in God and they will make sure that the child believes in God and then when you are 13 years old well you get to confirm that so this is when from when I was 13 and I confirmed that I believe in God I haven't seen that for years could of course just have put it in the video recorder okay there are different settings for well the quality here we can see that well we can we are picking the a B 2 USB 2 connection and the microphone is the same thing so we can set the no it's it's permanently set something we can it'll have a little bit of setup here but it has already selected that it's using the composite connection it also has the s-video connections to per video it stands for control we have some settings there none of them are ready we're not able to slide any of them so okay go away and we have some settings here we can select the DVD you can select oh the the thing will actually both do in TSC and Pell or as I only have a pal video well then we have good average we want the best and that's also DVD is also the best BCD is was super BCD is a little bit better and we have DVD and DVD is by far the best that we can maybe this one let's see what that gives us of options not really anything so I'll go back and pick DVD it will take up some fair amount of space I'm sure that's not really important when you capture something like this you want the best quality you can always scale it down but you can't scale it up again so we'll pick this one this one is splitting size it's just if I capture more data then I would be able to fit on one DVD well it will split it up into two files which is pretty neat and it will put it there I'm sure we can maybe that's bad it will put it there I want to make sure that I have and you don't want this computer C Drive yeah we have 87 gigabytes that's that should be enough so we're gonna put that on there we're gonna be ready to hit the record button I'm gonna hit the record button and I'm gonna stop the video the start of it will be pretty bad probably when you start a video recorder back in the day okay I was confirmed the 16th of April 1989 so this is that was actually my cousin she was confirmed the same day as me so we had our party together [Applause] [Applause] this is a lot of people that I do not actually know so this is where we had our party and the colors as well this tape has an eight well so the colors are coming and going and it is like almost what is that almost 30 years old now yikes yeah there was a hundred and four people at this confirmation thing so this is me when I was 13 I'm I'm up there somewhere this is my cousin she's about a half a year we were confirmed on the same day effort so Ghana look exactly the same well she is a lot prettier than me and we're practicing our speech [Applause] I've never been good at reading so this was actually important for me well the good thing about conformation is that you get a lot of gifts I'm on wrapping gifts here oh I got a stereo from my mom but that's that was an awesome gift and people coming ok these are family party videos they really don't eat well with time so well it's probably a good idea to capture this before the video tape completely dies my mom has a better copy I think so I'll have to go and try and see if I can get that away from here so with this little seven dollar six seven dollar thing from China I have now been able to relive 40 minutes of embarrassment from when I was 13 years old and have this party the videotape does not have much colour back in it so probably should have done this years ago but I'll in this video with me as a 13 year old little boy sounding like a 9 year old girl saying thank you for all the presents and saying thank you to my parents for being such good parents [Music] [Applause] thank you very much for watching my videos links in the description if you want to resi your embarrassing moments from back in the day have a nice day bye bye

7. Does your PC Need This?? – Capture Cards Explained
- As you can probably imagine, we deal with a ton of video around here. A lot of it comes from cameras or screen recording software, but we also make frequent use of capture cards, which are typically standalone USB or PCI Express devices that can be used to record from external devices, like a game console or a camera, like on The WAN Show. Which raises the question, why haven't we made a video about a capture card in over five years? Well, the truth is that I wasn't ever really satisfied with any of them, but in recent years, they have improved immensely. And when CORSAIR and AMD reached out about doing a sponsored video about their new VENGEANCE a4100 gaming PCs with included capture cards, it seemed like a no-brainer to take a look at how far they've come and demystify this category of products. So today, we talk capture cards, what they do, and why you should or should not buy one for your game streaming or recording setup. (upbeat music) Before we get into whether you might need a capture card, it's important to understand exactly what they actually do. A capture card is a device designed to take an unencrypted video signal and convert it into a format that can be understood and recorded by the computer it's plugged into. If your intention is to record TV or movies off Netflix, be warned that those signals are encrypted using HDCP and no legal device is gonna decrypt it for you. For consumer devices, it's typical to see an HDMI input, like what you'd get out of your game console, but in the professional world, SDI is preferred for its longer maximum cable lengths, support for time code, and locking connector. Now, typical capture card looks either like this, a box that, (grunts) there we go, plugs into the USB port on your PC, or like this, a, well, box that plugs directly into the PCI Express slot on your motherboard. These two styles make up the majority of consumer capture devices, and both of them are dependent on a nearby computer to handle the actual processing of the data. Elgato offers both form factors for both tiers of their capture devices, their HD tier and their 4K tier. And while there are some minor benefits and drawbacks to either approach, generally, they share the same functionality. And when you plug them into your PC, they're gonna get picked up by your capture software in a similar way. There are exceptions to this rule, like the Cam Link series that registers as a webcam, making it a little bit easier to use in video chat software. In our experience, PCI Express-based capture cards tend to be significantly more reliable, just like water bottles from lttstore.com. Now, whether this is due to not having to deal with USB driver issues because internal cards are closer to cooling fans, or just because PCI Express is generally a lower latency, more stable interconnect than USB, we are not sure. USB cards though, offer a lot more flexibility. Basically any computer with a USB port, that is USB 3, can run them, laptops included. If you wanna switch which system you're recording on, you just got to move which USB port you're plugged into rather than having to shut down a system, pull a PCI Express card, shut down the other system, put it in, and then fire them both back up. This flexibility can come with its own issues, as we mentioned before, though. And we have found these cards tend to be a little less stable. For instance, if you rock a budget motherboard with only a single, or best case scenario, two USB controllers on it, it's actually quite likely that you're gonna end up overloading your USB controller by having too many high throughput devices plugged into it. Like if you were running, say for example, a 4K webcam and a 4K capture card for your game console at the same time. Some people might not have a PC around to plug their capture card into though, like say, at a LAN party or a tournament. Fortunately, as I mentioned before, there are also capture cards that feature standalone encoding and recording, like the 4K60 S+. In this case, a hardware encoding chip is installed in the capture device, which does the work that normally the attached computer would do by encoding the incoming video stream into a playable video file. That allows those to record entirely on their own, just pop an SD card in, and you're off to the races. They do tend to be a bit more expensive though. Regardless of what it plugs into though, basically, all gaming-oriented capture devices share one trait, and that is, not the real, pass through. Pass through is an essential feature if you wanna be able to game on the device that you're recording at the same time, because otherwise you would have to deal with the crazy latency of trying to gain through your OBS preview window or something like that. With pass through, the main signal that you're capturing is passed through back to your display while it's being captured. So this is usually through an HDMI output port on the capture card with manufacturers generally claiming that there is zero added latency. That was something we wanted to investigate in this video. So we tested all three styles of recorder from Elgato. USB with the HD60 S+, PCI Express with the 4K60 Pro, and standalone with the 4K60 S+ on our latency tester, and, hey, good news, CORSAIR, we actually didn't find any appreciable increase in latency when using any of them. So then, it's up to you which form factor of capture card is best for you. Though, if you have the space and you don't need the extra flexibility, we definitely encourage going with something PCI Express-based. As for the resolution, that just depends on your use case. If you're browsing Elgato cards, the price differences between their two PCIE models, it's pretty minimal. So it's $80 to go to the 4K60 Pro from the HD60 Pro, and you gave me the extra flexibility of high frame rate 4K recording. Just make sure that your source content actually pushes that resolution. Although even then, for the minimal cost, it might be worth future proofing. And it seems like CORSAIR agrees since this happens to be the card that's pre-installed in the VENGEANCE a4100 streaming PC that they sent over. The configuration we have here is pretty dang smack-on for streaming. The Ryzen 3700X CPU has enough cores for gaming with some extras for video encoding, and if you want less of a CPU hit, the equipped RTX 2070 SUPER comes with NVIDIA's latest NVENC encoding chip, which allows for a near-zero performance hit while encoding coding directly on the GPU. Our specific config also comes with both a 480 gig NVMe drive for excellent OS responsiveness and two terabytes of mass storage for games, video clips, duh, or what have you. So now we know what all the capture cards sort of look like and what they do, but the final question is, do you actually need one? Can't you just capture your screen with Fraps or OBS? Well, in a lot of cases, yes. If you're strictly a PC gamer and you don't have any external capture requirements, like no DSLR camera, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or the like, then there really isn't any major benefit to running a capture card in your system. Fortunately, for you though, the VENGEANCE a4100 along with CORSAIR's other gaming systems is available without a capture card to save you the unnecessary purchase if you don't need it. So, thanks for watching. If you're interested in more technical streamer recording stuff, maybe check out our video on building a streaming setup on the cheap. 8. Turn any Camera into a Webcam on the Cheap! USB HDMI Video Capture Cards Review
hey everybody it's lon seidman and you are likely doing a lot of work from home these days and often need a webcam to do it and if you're trying to figure out some ways to make yourself look better with a higher quality camera you might have noticed that it's hard to get a hold of a good webcam these days but you might have a bunch of cameras sitting around that could actually work as webcams and there's a great way now to hook them up to your computer very inexpensively there's a whole bunch of these super cheap capture cards that have shown up on amazon over the last couple of months and what we're going to be doing in this video is taking a look at three random ones that i purchased here and see how they perform bringing in some of these traditional cameras into our laptop here as a webcam and this might be a good alternative especially if you have things like a gopro hanging around or even an old camcorder or something you might be able to repurpose those older cameras as a pretty decent webcam device and we're going to show you how to do that in this video now i do want to let you know in the interest of full disclosure that i got all three of these capture boards from amazon through their vine program free of charge however all the opinions you're about to hear are my own nobody is paying for this review nor is anyone reviewing or approving what you're about to see before it was uploaded all right so let's take these things out of the box and as i do so just remember you always get what you pay for there are much better capture devices out there that cost more that have support and companies that stand behind them for some reason a bunch of these just got dumped on the market and my guess is that there's a factory in china somewhere that got a good deal on some chips and is just cranking them out so although these are coming in different packages with different pieces of documentation there might be some subtle differences between them but for the most part these things are pretty much the same and should function about the same because i believe the inside of them is pretty much identical from one device to the other there are some differences here as to what these are looking like here they take them out of the box but again they're all coming with the same specifications and i think should perform pretty much the same now the devices here will capture 1080p up to frames per second but you can hook up a 4k camera it's just going to down convert the video to 1080 and i believe it also supports lower resolutions as well and a little later in the video we'll experiment with some lower resolutions and see if we can get a 720p 60 signal to work on these eposvox is a great streaming tutorial channel i did a profile of these for people doing production and game streaming and he did find that there was a lot of flexibility in what you can do with these devices but today we're going to be mostly focused on webcam use and we'll do a little bit of capture uh in this video as well when we get uh towards the end so let me get started here we'll just pick the first one here plug it in and i'm plugging it into my gaming laptop here which is running zoom and this would be the same if you were plugging it into a desktop computer or another laptop we're running windows right now but we'll check out chrome os in a little bit and what's happening right now as we plug this thing in is that the system is recognizing it it says setting up a device and it looks like it was able to get it going and what i'm going to do now is connect up this camera this is a nikon dslr this is an older one called the d600 but it actually outputs a really nice hdmi signal now if you have one of these cameras your mileage will vary because every one of these cameras does something a little different when it comes to its hdmi video output some will have hdmi out but they won't give you a full frame others will give you some image but it'll have stuff on the screen so what you want to look for is a camera that can do a clean hdmi output and it's hard to find the specifications on that for most cameras so you may have to ask around or poke around in the settings what i found is that the mid-range of the nikons and canons tend to do that because a lot of video creators are using these as studio cameras the canon camcorders even the really low-cost ones all support clean output through their hdmi in fact most camcorders do so we're going to switch over to zoom and what i'm going to do here is go into my settings and go to video now what it's going to default to more than likely will be the camera that you have on your laptop and i have an option now for usb video here so let's select that and let's see what we get look at that we've got the nikon camera here on screen and look at that we can get a nice bokeh i've got a 50 millimeter lens on it so let me zoom in on my messy desk here and you can get a feel for what that looks like and if you're curious what one of these nicer slrs would look like on your webcam here you go this is coming in from my nikon camera through one of these low-cost adapters into my production software it looks pretty nice the focus might be a little soft just because these slrs are really difficult to get right on the focus but if you do have everything set up and you put your chair in the right spot it should look really really nice and this is what people on zoom would see if you were plugged in with one of these cameras now the good news is all three of these devices functioned identically when we plugged them into the computer here and attached up cameras and as expected when i looked at the hardware id of each they're all the same so inside they have the exact same guts now i was curious if we could connect more than one and use them independently and so what i've got now is one plugged into the back of my computer and another one here plugged in on the side i've got my camcorder hooked up and right now we're looking at my nikon slr in zoom and if i go to my camera list here and select the canon camcorder you can see there it goes that that one is working independently and they're both accessible to me here so if you have a conferencing software that allows for multiple cameras and the ability to switch between them this should work here with multiple devices just be warned though that sometimes your laptop or your desktop computer might put the usb ports on the same hub or the same connection and sometimes that might lead to trouble so on this laptop when i plugged in the adapter to one of the usb ports the color was a little off and when i moved it to a different port it worked fine so this is another area where your mileage may vary a bit but the good news here is that it looks as though you can use multiple adapters with a single computer and have more than one camera attached simultaneously now one cool thing about using an external camera like this with your computer through one of these adapters is that it doesn't just transmit video it can do audio as well and if you plug in a nice external microphone to your camcorder you can feed both video and audio into the adapter here and get a much better experience so right now we're back on our zoom settings and depending on the software you're using you'll have to go in and find the microphone section on there but as you can see here the digital audio interface the usb digital adapter that we have installed is showing up as a microphone and if i just go here and test the mic i can maybe tap on it a little bit here and talk a little bit i'll stop recording and tap on it a little bit here and talk a little bit and you can hear that it's picking up that microphone and playing it back for me so i could use this camera as my mic or have a microphone connected to this camera be the mic and you'll get better audio in addition to better video and it's often best to use a microphone attached to your camera because that will keep the lip sync working properly depending on your computer if you're bringing your mic in through a usb microphone and having video come over the camera sometimes the audio and video may get a little out of sync but if your audio is coming over with the video through the single cable to the adapter you'll have a much better presentation now you're not just limited to cameras you can hook up other hdmi devices as well so i've got my ipad connected up right now and as you can see it is being brought into zoom and the latency is very minimal on this too i was very pleased with that so if you wanted to have yourself on one camera with an adapter you can plug in a second adapter and connect your ipad for example and bring both of those into your zoom conference one thing you'll notice here is that the image is reversed you can change this in the settings what it does is it gives you a mirror image for your own video so if i was on a call somebody would see the image in the proper orientation here zoom also has some options to do two cameras at the same time so if you go to the share video option and go over to advanced you'll see there's an option to add in content from a second camera and there are ways you could actually have both your ipad and yourself up at the same time so pretty much most hdmi sources should work with this the one exception would be maybe a blu-ray player which has copy protection on board the movie studios don't want you broadcasting their movies out to the world so that might be one thing that doesn't work but it looks like an ipad and other devices here should work without too much trouble on the ipad you will just need to get an adapter to get an hdmi output so i have a newer ipad pro that uses a usbc adapter but other ipads will use the lightning to hdmi adapter to get the output there and it's possible to also hook up computers and raspberry pi's and other things that output hdmi through one of these adapters all right so let's try out the mac now we've got my little 12 inch macbook which unfortunately is no longer being manufactured now you'll note here that this is a larger usb a connector but the macbook has a single usb type-c port the good news is that with an adapter all of these older usb style devices will work with the newer usbc format one of these actually came with an adapter but you can find these very easily any usbc hub should also be able to work as well and we're just going to pop it in here to the side we've got the canon camcorder here already attached i'm just going to load up quicktime and this will find a webcam just like it would in other applications as well so we'll just go to new movie recording here and as you can see it already came up how about that so it is working just fine here on the mac let's try out the chromebook now and see if we have any results with that all right so we've got the chromebook out now on the desk this is the pixel book go that in full disclosure was sent to us by google last year for a review a nice little chromebook here and what i've got just like the mac is that adapter in place here to get the capture card connected because this only has usb type-c ports and right now we're in google meet i have my video option set up here as you can see it's grabbing video from the webcam but it looks as though usb is also an option here and if i just move this thing out of the way here you can see that this is working with google meet as well so it looks like this is working not only on windows but on the mac and on chromebooks and it should work also with other devices that support webcams because the standard that these capture devices are using is basically the webcam standard so if something works with a webcam it should work here and it's encouraging to see that it's working on at least three different platforms and i know it also works on linux as well for supported applications so now we're going to take a look at some more technical items because i know a lot of you will have some techie questions that you'll want answered in this video and what i'm doing right now is running my analog mega sg at 720p at 60 frames per second into vmix and it seems to be working just fine at that frame rate it looks like we're getting the 60p here so i think you should be able to run it at 60 at lower resolutions remember at 1080p the max it will do is 30 frames per second if i pull up the chart here to look at performance it looks as though we're getting a couple of re-synced frames here as we go along along with a few drop frames this is something that eposvox noticed in his video as well it's not going to be something that will be all that noticeable on a stream perhaps but this is something that i often see on these lower cost devices so when you drop a frame it means it wasn't able to keep up and then when it resyncs it's often going a little faster than the frame rate that vmix here is requiring so these are not perfect devices they are not for professional use but if you're in a pinch and you need to bring something in they do seem to work pretty well at that and they will drop a few frames here or there but if you're just doing it on a live stream not that many folks are really going to notice that and it looks as though i'm getting a nice smooth 60 frames per second here through vmix at 720p and we also plug them into obs and i've got the game console here running along with the canon video camera all seems to be working pretty well and you can move things around and do all the usual things you do with obs2 now one of the reasons why i like using these analog consoles is that it's very easy to switch around video modes as you can see here we're at 720p60 i can switch it back to 1080p 60. this of course will not give you 1080p 60 out the hdmi though you're only going to get 30 frames per second so things won't look as smooth it's going to have to drop frames to meet that frame rate but it also seems to work at 480p if i switch down to that mode boom it just comes right back up again so it looks like it's got some degree of scaling built in as well and again if you are at these lower resolutions you should get the 60 frames per second output again 1080p though is limited to 30. so that's going to do it for this look at these low-cost hdmi adapters again the packaging is different the look of the devices is different but the guts inside are the same it looks like on most of these and i was really impressed as many other reviewers have been as to how good these are for the price it's almost too good to be true based on what i've paid for these kinds of devices in the past one thing to note though is that this is not for professional broadcasters given that we're going to see some frame drops and resyncs and that sort of thing but for streamers and for people doing zoom meetings and whatnot not bad at all again the max output on these is 1080p at 30 frames per second so if you are capturing game footage you'll probably want something that can do 60 frames per second at 1080p but these might be great for a secondary camera like the one that's on you as you're talking over your game stream and they're also good for more than just cameras because as you saw you can connect ipads and other hdmi devices up to them just buy at your own risk just because all of these sellers might be gone tomorrow so maybe buy two or three of them from different sellers just to be safe but overall i think i am comfortable actually surprisingly uh recommending these as a low-cost super budget video capture solution that's going to do it for now until next time this is lon seidman thanks for watching this 9. FOSCOMAX USB3.0 VIDEO CAPTURE DEVICE — LGH
oh this will never work guys have you ever been let down by the big name like for example elgato and their hd60 pro the card that's supposed to be great at 300 dollars well i have and the simple thing is all i wanted to do was hook up my camcorder which is a 4k camcorder pass it through and record 1080p out so i could stream live video for you guys using the camcorder well it failed what it did it would give me like a milky white screen seeing everything in the background perfectly clear but it wouldn't get rid of the haze now this could be a software issue with the software i'm using but it is the software that i'm using and it is compatible with the hd60 pro now the hd60 pro is supposed to have a pass through and down scale the 4k to 1080p which is all i wanted so a few things that i did was i downscaled my camcorder to 1080p no result changed it was the same thing over and over and over so how do we solve that we're going to try it with this fasco max usb 3 input device so this guy claims 4k passthrough 1080p out recording i should not get the milky feeling or the c or the view or whatever and maybe i can do some live streaming for you guys so let's sit back relax and see what this guy here can do and hopefully can do what elgato couldn't [Music] box it's actually pretty simple i mean you get your all brushed aluminum device which is pretty nice it's got a us or usb it does actually have a usb in which is a usb a to a which is something different i don't see that very often but it's a to a usb 3.0 uh it has a headphone jack and a microphone jack so you can actually directly plug in your devices here for your audio recording which is pretty nice at the same time you have your hdmi in and out like any other recording device should have a fairly thick hdmi cable so pretty happy about that in this case i won't be needing it but it's nice to have that extra hdmi for when you are doing it into the out of course your usb a to a usb 3.0 cable and it's a nice blue and then the cable that i was ecstatic about because i actually have this feature on this computer and that is usbc to usb 3. so that's what i'm going to try and hook it up with today and see if we can get that smooth audio what was happening with the other cards that i have if it wasn't giving me the white screen of goo shall we say it was uh the voice and the picture were not lined up and it's too much work to try and fix that it should not be i want zero uh delay and if i have that delay before youtube it's gonna look really bad it's gonna look like i'm doing some sort of foreign i'll kill you movie you know like back in the old days when we translated the chinese martial art games or movies to english the lips were moving there was nothing and then the chatter later and that's exactly what i was getting so let's see if we can get zero delay on this fix that problem now we have the hdmi adapter hooked up it's going through a very long hdmi because of course this camera could be put just about anywhere in this room and then it goes into this device and from the usb 3.0 into the usbc so now what i have to do is i have to start up my software which will be xsplit gamecaster and we're going to see if it recognizes it because that is the most important part of the whole thing if that doesn't recognize units pretty useless i'm now recording there's no white out on my screen whatsoever so everything seems to be working like i would want it so at this point i won't know if my lips are moving with the sound until i play that back so let's check that out and you guys let me know what you think in the comments below and hopefully this little guy here can let me live stream and not look like i'm doing some old martial art movie so just in case that is gotta be recording my sound i'm now recording there's no white out on my screen whatsoever so everything seems to be working like i would want it so uh at this point i won't know if my lips are moving with the sound until i play that back so let's check that out and you guys let me know what you think in the comments below and hopefully this little guy here can let me live stream and not look like i'm doing some old martial art movie there you have it it looks pretty darn close i'm very impressed with it the image quality is decent remember that would be what i would expect from a live stream that was also in bad lighting so if i was to you know change my lighting a bit whatever i'm gonna have quite a decent production to look at so overall sometimes the big name is not the big answer and you can get everything you need out of just a hundred dollar device versus a 300 device and i've now learned a valuable lesson i own three elgato devices i have the elgato hd which i cannot get rid of because that's got the old rcas and component and everything on it for doing retro consoles so it's great then i have the hd60 which i bought as a backup and that's the external then i bought the hd60 pro for 280 or whatever it was plus tax and it failed and let me down bad the reason why i wouldn't count the other two externals into this idea was because they're usb 2.0 and there's the lag which i did try on another device i had and there was delay between my voice and the chatter so it wasn't going to work out this little great device here from foster max 4k in 1080p recording out i actually have my camera going in a 2160p just to give it a little more lift and it still took the video and produced what i wanted so i'm very impressed with this again you could do whatever you want with lighting and fix things and make things as beautiful as possible but at this point i am definitely sold a hundred dollars solved my problem now when i go to live stream for example computer builds or just me being stupid you guys get to see it in clarity not from a webcam so guys this is my thought and take on the fossil max elgato replacement for a hundred dollars i'll leave a link down below if you're looking to get something like this and you're looking to save a ton of money remember it's 99 canadian therefore it should be cheaper us so all my u.s friends out there if you're looking to get something as an elgato equivalent this is your answer it'll solve all your problems and save your pocket so guys till next time thank you for watching hopefully i saved you money game over you
10. Testing the Best Budget Capture Card | BlueAVS HDMI to USB Capture Card Review
you might have heard of capture cards before they turn a video output signal into an input that your computer can interpret sometimes they can sit internally in your computer's pcie slots like the avermedia live gamer 4k but they can also sit externally to your computer like the elgato hd60s both of these are pretty expensive internal models can be as much as 300 and external versions might run you up about 130 but what if i told you there was an alternative that could pass for a thumb drive and is just a fraction of the price of normal capture cards in this video we'll be talking about the blue avs capture card and why it might be one of the best 20 pieces of tech that i've ever seen i've been creating content for a long time recording video editing it down you know the deal if i had this little guy when i was first getting started my life would have been so much easier i actually purchased a capture card a very long time ago the elgato game capture hd i tried hooking it up to my ps3 to record gameplay but i was never really happy with the results i still have the game capture hd but i don't use it it requires the elgato software in order to record which limits functionality and hinders ease of use and ultimately the video that ended up coming out of it just wasn't that great the beauty of the blue avs card is that i haven't found something that it couldn't record i was recently asked to set up a live stream setup for church we ran hdmi cables to two ada imaging cameras plug these onto the other end of the cable and they work flawlessly for interpreting the video it seems that all this does is make whatever input you're putting into it look like a webcam so that your computer will receive the input and interpret it correctly this means that nearly any hdmi output can be sent to this device and recorded by your computer all you need to record using the card is an hdmi output a computer with a recording software like obs and of course the little stick itself after that it really is plug and play there aren't even drivers that you need to install all you have to do is attach the stick to the end of an hdmi cable and either plug the stick in directly or use the included usb extender on the end of the stick i usually opt to use the extender since it gives you a bit more range and it takes some stress off of the usb port especially if you're using big heavy hdmi cables the port can undergo a lot of tension if it's plugged in directly and can potentially damage your computer i always like to go over the construction of a device that i'm reviewing but there isn't really that much to say here it is made of metal with a matte finish and has a usb type a port i have a little bit of mixed feelings about the fact that it's usb 2.0 but this is actually kind of practical considering that the max output of the device is 1080p at 60fps or it could just be the cause of that either way uh usb 2.0 is all you got we're going to have to dive into technical jargon here for a second but it'll be important for understanding the maximum capabilities of the stick for usb 2.0 the advertised theoretical max bit rate is 480 megabytes per second but this ends up being closer to 40 megabytes per second according to a firm called cypress who can do way more in-depth research than i ever could just for reference this translates to 40 000 kilobytes per second for streaming video a recommended bitrate for 1080p video is 4 500 kilobytes per second or 4.5 megabytes per second so usb 2.0 can handle that very easily theoretically and very theoretically usb 2.0 could even handle streaming 4k video the recommended bitrate for 4k at 60fps is 21 to 51 megabytes per second which is just barely within the wheelhouse of usb 2.0 my guess is that there are technical limitations which would prevent this from working for instance the packet size might not be large enough to support all the data needed to move frames that large quickly enough for the spec there's probably also problems with controllers and other technical jargon like that however the stick is capped at 180p video anyway so don't get your hopes up about recording 4k if you want to expand into 4k video capture you'll have to upgrade to something like the elgato cam link 4k at 120 so because you're limited to 1080p video that's the max resolution you'll be able to record ideally i would like to have the option of recording video at 4k i normally record these videos to an sd card at 4k and i upload them to youtube in 4k so if i'm sticking with the stick i would have to drop down to 1080p video or blow up the footage to fit my 4k format which probably wouldn't look very good if you're recording a video game or some other media source that too will be limited to 1080p this isn't exactly an optimal viewing experience but it is usable and after all most people are viewing their content on mobile phones these days anyway cell phones so it's not like people are going to be looking for resolution much higher than that if they're on their phone most devices don't support that but if you're viewing it on any kind of larger screen the video will have to be stretched which will result in artifacts and a pixelated result let's go over briefly what the compression of this video is before you're seeing it so normally with my camera i record at 4k at i think 30 megabits per second so that's a fairly high bit rate it ends up looking pretty nice as far as i'm concerned uh normally when i export to youtube i export in premiere at 4k and i usually set the bit rate for 20 megabits per second just to compress it down because the file will be pretty huge if it's at 30 so getting it down to 20 makes it a little bit more manageable there will also be different states of compression in the recording done by obs so i'll label them on screen but there are different sets of encoding presets that you can use in obs going from fast to slow fast is the most compression and slow is the least compression so you can also set bitrate which is the amount of data per second again i'll label these on screen so you get a better idea but then even after that it'll be compressed again by youtube in order for you to watch it if you want to see it at max resolution you can change the setting down in the bottom right and view it at 4k so anyway now that we've talked about that let's take a look at the actual footage [Music] [Music] [Music] so after taking a look at some of the sample recordings i would say that the recordings are definitely passable the colors look similar but the clarity of the image depends a lot on the bit rate and encoding preset that's used for recording in obs when i use my sony a7 iii recording in 1080p at 30fps and 30 megabits per second it looks much clearer than when i use the capture card at the same bit rate settings there is a lot more recording hardware inside of my camera than there is in this little stick so i'm not surprised another large factor is the cpu usage preset option in obs this determines how much your computer will use its cpu to encode the footage in real time however when you set it too high and your cpu is not high enough powered this can debilitate the computer and hinder other processing factors the slowest setting is placebo and when i set it to that with the most intensive option my cpu was almost at 100 and recording lagged significantly it actually only recorded one frame of the video so most of the footage from slower cpu presets is unusable because the cpu on my laptop couldn't keep up i'm using the 8 core cpu on the 2020 macbook pro which normally keeps up with encoding 1080p video just fine it could be user error in this case and that i don't understand 100 what the preset actually changes but if you look at the individual frames the increase in quality just isn't worth it there's not much change in image quality from very fast to the slow preset so i would just leave it with the very fast preset which is the easiest mode for the computer to work with as you might expect there is really no comparison between the 4k footage and the 1080p footage from either directly in camera or the stick the 4k quality just absolutely outshines the 1080p footage when we take a look at 4k when it's down sampled to 1080p meaning i took 4k video and exported it at 1080p if we make a comparison that way it still blows it out of the water the 1080p footage looks okay but the downsampled footage is just clearly sharper it's probably worth mentioning that the two different recordings probably have two different use cases the camera is meant to record footage as cleanly and beautifully as possible and reproduce it that way in the future whereas a live stream software is just meant to keep a constant feed of video broadcasting to your audience without any latency or with little latency this wouldn't excuse any video rendering faults on obs end but it could explain the difference in quality one other thing that's worth mentioning is that while this thing is cool it's not magic there's only a thumb drive worth of space of hardware that can be devoted to interpreting video signal so there isn't a lot of room for hardware processing here what surprised me is actually how well the video game footage came out it's almost like this is intended to record video game footage perhaps it's because the video is coming pre-rendered out of the gpu and the stick might be doing less work when interpreting the video signal but it does look surprisingly okay weirdly it does look much more saturated there's some color shifting happening than when it appears on my screen but i had to mess with my video game settings in game to get this to work at all since i used two monitors i had to make this the third monitor so i was playing around with it a little bit it could be a mistake on my end while i recognize that there are some issues with video quality i think my favorite part about this stick is it's creative options this makes recording video game gameplay extremely easy you can plug in a gopro and live stream it from there from obs if you've got a long enough cable you can even record output from a dvd player or any other video device if you want to archive family videos and only family videos i don't advocate for piracy on this channel if you're wanting to expand your creative capabilities this is a great thing to pick up like i mentioned you can pick up any output so that you're only limited by your creativity in terms of what you can capture granted it probably won't be the highest quality footage you've ever seen but it's definitely usable for a 20 price tag it's hard to pass up thanks so much for watching all the
