The speaker is solid and sounds excellent – stay away from the appThe speakers are well built, sound great, and the mixing controls provide rich enough features for solo gigs, and small gatherings. I use the pass through cable to link two speakers together and Bluetooth from my phone to the first speaker in the chain. The speaker itself would get 5 stars, yet the app makes me give 4 stars overall.Battery life appears to be as advertised and it is really convenient to go to a venus and not have to worry about pulling power from somewhere. The phone/tablet app is an entirely different matter. You need the app to wirelessly link the two speakers. I used the latest firmware for the speakers and latest iOS and app version. When syncing the speakers together wirelessly as a speaker group, the sounds regularly skips and playback speed changes faster and slower in the middle of songs. JBL should know that reliable – unbroken – audio delivery is critical in a performance setting. You cannot have your playback gap and sputter nor should playback speed up to sound like the Chipmunks. All the other bells and whistles in the app are “cool”, yet reliable sound is absolutely critical. Without reliable sound the rest of the app features are meaningless. If JBL really puts effort into cleaning up the app and make speaker groups feature solid then this review would get the full five stars. The only way to undo the mess the speakers are left in is to perform a factory reset (easy to do).Fortunately, these speakers have so many ways to physically connect to each other and other audio equipment that you can get great performance if you toss the app aside.

Excellent sound, but volume is too limited. The knobs often have to be turned MULTIPLE turns in order to go from minimum to maximum, and the treble / bass knobs have a really weird way of showing their settings. I feel that the knobs need to be calibrated such that one full 360 degree rotation would go from minimum to maximum, rather than it taking 5 or 6 full rotations to cause that. They’re “soft” knobs, as they adjust different things depending on the other settings, and it can be very confusing why there’s no volume output. Just keep turning and turning, eventually they’ll work. The remote control app from a tablet or phone is VERY good. much better than using the knobs. The biggest downfall is that for a gig inside a 1500 square foot chapel with two acoustic guitars, one mic’ed and one fed direct, volume had to be very near maximum to be effective. This is NOT an extremely loud system, especially if you have much bass at all. It sounds REALLY GOOD, but don’t expect to rattle the building. The 8″ woofer simply won’t pull it off. If you want bass, you’ll need an amplified sub to feed from this, and I think that could be an awesome system.Mic preamps are really good. The fact that the bluetooth system makes a noise every time it connects can be problematic in a performance environment – be careful. And the bluetooth does not have to be on for the remote control app to function / link. Not sure I’d buy it again, but it’s a quality unit.

Effects need further developmentOverall, I was pretty impressed with this little system. It certainly has it’s limits professionally but could be great for certain situations where you didn’t have access to power. Like for instance, playing a grave side ceremony for a member of a motorcycle gang who passed on (yes, I’ve actually done this gig!). Or a remote, small wedding ceremony where there’s no electricity and the bride and groom get married while sitting on their horses (yep, been there, done that!). 😂However, I returned it based on the virtual mixer limitations. First however, I WILL say the degree of eq shaping in the virtual mixer used via smartphone or tablet is PHENOMENAL! But…. and unfortunately, here is where the wheels came of for me as a professional entertainer: The reverbs are barely useable if not over applied. The delay is unacceptable because there is no tap tempo and there is not enough parameter of speed control. AND… there is no adjustment for the number of repeats. Delay ads energy to vocals and can lend a percussive accent to acoustic/electric guitar so is a great asset to a soloist like myself. BUT it generally needs to be applied at the tempo of the song your playing OR at a pretty fast speed to give that Elvis/John Lennon style slapback sound to your vocal. This delay speed (tempo) can’t be adjusted to a fast enough repeat for that. Could you add an external effect unit and or mixer with built in effects? Yes, but that would require a power source, extra cables and more setup time which would defeat the purpose of a standalone, self powered unit like this was designed to be. If you don’t need or care about having quality effects, this is otherwise a decent little self powered PA. Lots of volume for its size and seems sturdy.

Bose S1 Pro vs JBl CompactI am a big Bose fan, have the smaller portables, head phones, HT set ups etc. I wanted a loud Bluetooth speaker to use outdoors and in the garage. I originally just got the Bose, then got this one. Figured I would leave one in the garage and one in the truck for outdoor stuff. I looked at a ton of reviews and at the end of the day, the feedback was split on which is better. After having both, the one thing that I really didn’t appreciate was having a full EQ on the JBL. Out of the box the Bose sounds better but it does have that “Bose” filter on it. It sounds good but does sound like my other bose products. The JBL sounded weak in the mids and harsh on the high end, the bass also seemed to have a sharp drop past 150hz.With the full EQ, you can get this speaker to sound however you want and are not “take it or leave it” like you are with the bose. Want more mids? 5 seconds on the EQ and done. You can tailor the sound to however you want. Since this speaker also goes lower, the range is bigger also. Want it to be flat? Increase the EQ curve and done. I was playing with it for 5 minutes and got it sounding perfect. Also, the volume on this thing is very high 112dbs is no joke. I doubt anyone will ever get past 80% on this thing unless no one is sitting within 15ft.Long story short, get the JBL and tune it to whatever sound profile you prefer. I didn’t mess with the PA features, and I have no intent of playing instruments in my lifetime. From what I understand they are better on this unit though. Just wanted a very loud Bluetooth speaker that was loud. Checks those boxes for me.Ended up paying the restocking fee and grabbing a second JBL.

Perfectly loud. This speaker was purchased so I would have great sound quality while camping at music festivals and not have to charge it. It gets loud enough for an outside group of 40-50. The battery is super easy to take out and pop a new one in so if you know you’re going to be going a while without charging it’s super easy to find another battery that you can have a spare one. Even inside houses this thing gets too loud. The inputs allow my friends and I to plug our dj decks right into the speaker with no adapters and the equalizer on the jbl eon compact app lets us tailor the sound to the kind of music we are playing and the volume levels we need for it. Perfect speaker for anything. Got kicked off the public beach within an hour of blasting music with this thing 😉

performance!Very portable and convenient, sound is not the best or the greatest but it does the job.

I love this. Great sound and portabilityThe handle is a great feature. The sound is great, and I’ll be using it with my kiddo for busking.I’ve played my bass directly in it and it sounds great. There are two inputs and an aux input, so we’ll be able to both plug in and play, asking with a drum track. No other equipment needed, except the instruments. If you want to plug more in, all you need is a portable mixer.I may get another one of these JBL speakers.I love it!

Professional Features / Tips with this SpeakerIf your bass sounds lacking bump the eq a few dbs around 100 hertz with a wide parameter (low number).Learn the app. I was frustrated at first with the physical dials and seeing everything in the sunlight then got the app and it blew me away. It is easy to use for pros and feature rich compared to basic DSP on other speakers. It might not be as easy to use for a someone new to tuning their speakers. I highly suggest learning these features to make it sound how you want it.It likely doesn’t have strong preamps to keep the price down per unit. I’m cool with that. Use it with an external mixer. They don’t cost much. I use a Yamaha MGO6X (with a battery pack when needed for portability). It get great volume, and sounds incredible when paired with this speaker.I was debating between this, Maui 5 Go, and a Bose S1. I chose this because I can get 2 for nearly the price of a Maui 5 Go and have better stereo separation. A tripod is more stable on uneven ground and with wind. I can use it as an easy setup monitor for DJing, easily bring it anywhere with minimal setup and breaking down (the bag sold separately is also awesome and convenient). It also isn’t multiple pieces like a column array. The Bose S1 sounds great but has much more limited low end (critical to a professional sound when playing music), doesn’t get as loud, and distorts easier when played at high volumes for extended periods of time. For best sound quality use a wired (non-bluetooth connection) with two of these set to stereo. Bluetooth compresses the signal and limits the potential of sound quality and remember to start with great quality audio files (high quality MP3s, and lossless .wav, .aiff, or .flac when possible).

Not worth the moneyHad to use a bigger, cheaper, louder speaker system for party.

  10. Jean Gomez

Great quality sounds amazing loud!Quality sounds really good for open outdoors, battery life playing non-stop will give you about 4:30-5hrs straight. But it does sound clear and loud.
