14 Uses of RFID Technology in Athletic Events

The prediction that the North American sports market would grow to $73.5 billion by 2019 won’t come as a surprise.

Sports media is primarily driven by gate income, television rights, and sponsorships; technology is the fundamental element supporting all aspects of the industry.

In recent years, technology has had a huge impact on the sports industry. The majority of tennis fans are probably aware with Hawk-Eye, the line review technology. Additionally, Major League Baseball implemented the instant replay challenge system in 2014.

Less is known, though, about the application of contactless technology, such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), to live sporting events.

Here, we outline 14 RFID uses for sports event organizers, sports IT firms, and advertising agencies that have the potential to change the game.
