Ultra Wide Fisheye Lens

The 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye Lens with Built-in Hood from Rokinon gives you a 167º view with dramatic, exaggerated perspective when used with an APS-C camera, or a powerful circular image floating in the frame when used with a full frame digital camera or 35mm film camera. About Rokinon

Prime Lens Advantages

Prime lenses are typically sharper, lighter, and can work in lower lighting conditions than zoom lenses.

Less compromises are involved when a lens can be designed for optimal performance for a specific focal length.

They don’t have to overcome all of the additional problems encountered with the extra glass and mechanics required to zoom.

With their typically faster (wider) maximum apertures and fewer lens elements, primes can also gather and pass through more light.

As a result, even in poor lighting conditions, you can generally get better quality images and videos.

Additionally, due to their smaller size and weight, they are perfect for travel, and stealthy street shooting.

Fixed focal length lenses generally have smaller number of elements inside and no moving elements (except for focus, of course).

High Performance Primes are significantly smaller in size, thus more suitable for traveling and packing. And since they are smaller, they tend to weigh less, thus they wear you down less.

  1. VIVAVAIO

Easy to use and sharp photos though it has to be taken at bright areas. The aperture is auto set to f-22 meaning it is at the lowest light capture setting. You cannot change anything higher and most pictures turn out dark for indoors but great for outdoors.

    Good-ish
I got this a while ago because I found myself wishing to use a fish-eye lens at work on the daily. I’ve upgraded to a higher quality piece now, but I am glad I got tjis ine before investing. This is a good fish-eye lens for playing around. The manual focus and aperture does force inexperienced users to get aquatinted with the the lens and by an extent, the camera, whuch some people find frustrating. If you are not familiar with your camera yet, you definitely will be after using this for a while. Unfortunately, the glass is not the highest quality and the pictures do come out noisy. Almost unotisable in well lit environments, tho.I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND you buy this if you’re a student or just trying to explore macro/fish eye, as actual quality lenses can be 3-5 times more expensive than this one, and it isn’t worth it to spend a larger amount if you’re not going to use it on the regular.

    8 Year Review
I bought this lens 8 years’ ago and think it deserves a review.I was a reluctant purchaser having spent years dismissing fisheye lenses as a gimmick or something people bought when they ran out of other things to buy. How wrong l was. I have since developed an attachment for this lens and use it regularly. In 8 years this is what I found:-PROS:Well built, l have never had build problems with it. The controls are still precise after exposure to years of dust, dirt, grime etcGood (rather than great) contrast and renditionSimple – manual aperture and no autofocus means little to break.Useful – l use this for all the usual stuff – streetscapes, architecture, parties etc. It is fun to use and gives interesting shots.Value – rather than jumping in and spending heavily to get the Canon fisheye this is a vastly cheaper way to try this out.CONS:No autofocus. Manual aperture. Doesn’t bother me but some people have found this irritating.Doesn’t have the razor sharp rendition that the Canon fisheye has (but at a fraction of the price l didn’t expect it to).In summary, I am glad l bought this and I am surprised at how often I use it. If you are hesitant about getting a fisheye this is a great purchase. I am glad l have it.

    Great Practical Fish Eye
Great lens, especially in this price range. It’s a manual lens, so you control the focus and aperture. There’s no exposure sensitivity feature (at least for Nikon D3500) so you have to experiment with ISO, shutter and aperture settings to get the right exposure. The focus feature doesn’t appear to make much of a difference when using the view finder. So, if you’re careless, it will take blurry shots. I found the best way to work around this was to put the camera in “live view” and digitally zoom in on my subject, then adjust the focus ring for best clarity; then switching back to view finder and taking the picture. When I do this, it gets awesome results. Note, this is a very, very wide angle lens. It has 180 deg field of view- so the distortion is extreme on the edges, which is to be expected for a fish eye. But just know what you’re buying. Build quality is very robust and impressive. Even some of the Nikon lenses I have don’t feature the same metal component quality I see here. But the trade off is obviously less electronic circuitry to make it user friendly. I must plan my shots when using this lens and take my time- so it’s a true photographer’s lens. It is definitely NOT a pull out and shoot set up, so it’s less useful for on-the-go travel, etc.

    Rokinon 8mm – fish-eye fantastic.
–Spoiler at the end of the review–If you are currently using or need a fish-eye lens for your DSLR, then this is it. (Not good for a full-frame like Nikon’s FX cameras. Sorry.) I saw this on an Amazon daily deal and thought that it was a steal at $299 for a fish-eye lens. This is a beautiful, sturdy lens and started snapping photos the moment I received it. (FYI-this lens is mfg’d by Samyang in Korea and sold under different brand names like ProOPTIC, Bower, etc…)Currently I have a Nikon D40 and it needs to be set on manual “M” mode. One thing that I didn’t know about my D40, it doesn’t give you a light meter reading on M mode. You’ll have to do trial/error and check the photo on the LCD screen to get the right exposure. (This is a hassle on the camera’s part, another reason I’ll be upgrading soon.) Manual focus and manual aperture brings it back to old-school mode and to be honest, I kinda missed this direct control technique. One delightfully quirky thing about the Rokinon 8mm, IMHO, is that the lens tends to focus to infinity from nearly any setting, making the focus ring almost useless for distant subjects. Which is fine because you’ll concentrate more on getting the right exposure anyway. The pictures are simply stunning. It can capture nearly 180-degrees; I did a self-portrait from only a foot away and the light fixture directly above me was in the photo. Short of blowing up the image to 400% view, the colors and sharpness are great. So if you’re needing that fish-eye for your DSLR (non full-frame) this is the only choice.—- So here’s the SPOILER… —If you haven’t shot with a fish-eye lens or fish-eye photos aren’t part of your current work, you should consider getting an ultrawide like a 11mm to 12mm and up. The fisheye will have that distorted/bubble effect on photos and many photographers may want that. But if it’s not part of your current work, then you’ll get tired of this novelty within a day or two. This is a highly specific lens for a specialized effect and most photographers will not carry this in their camera bag for day to day use. Ultrawide lenses on the other hand, will keep straight lines straight and have minimal distortion. I’ve had this for a weekend and I’m going to return it on Monday. I’ll save up for an ultrawide lens or better yet, a full-frame camera like the rumored Nikon D600 which will be an “entry-level” FX.

Good, sturdy fisheye for the price!
I purchased this lens along with a Canon Rebel T2i less than a month ago and so far I am impressed by the results. The glass is nice and images for the most part are crisp. As other reviewers have noted the lens does not have auto focus, I like it that way personally. It’s not too hard to know where to set your focus with this lens (obviously depending on which application you are using it for). Day shots are good although it has a soft spot for sun glare and while it’s not unbearable it can be somewhat of a nuisance. Night shots are good as well, makes for very unique and fun city/landscape pictures! Obviously with lights there is some lens flare but that is to be expected.I have also been impressed with the construction of the lens. Slightly bulky but very sturdy. Recently I was taking photos of an amateur skateboarder and my worst fear was realized when his board flung out from under him and straight toward my lens! The board hit the hood…hard. Looked the lens/camera over, made sure everything worked right…not a scratch! The optics were fine and the lens hood was unscathed. Let’s just say that I was very lucky that day haha! One thing that stands out as well (this pertains strictly to the T2i) is that there is no vignetting in the corners. Personally I like some vignetting while FILMING with my Sony VX’s but not when I’m taking photos. The barrel distortion is great, for maximum effect you have to get very close to your subject which is nice but can also be slightly risky if you’re taking action sports pictures (refer to paragraph above). For the wider type of shots (lanscapes, family portraits, etc.) the lens performs well. Adequate distortion with nice clarity.By the way this is not a zoom-through fisheye. Slap it on and that’s it!Altogether I feel that this is a great fisheye for the price. I’m sure in the future I’ll upgrade to a higher quality fisheye but for now this lens is satisfactory. For anyone that needs a great fisheye on a budget this is the lens for you~

The full frame fisheye I was looking for.
This is a really fun fisheye lens, exactly what I was hoping for. Here are some test photos I did on my Sony a7iv, both in aps-c cropped mode and and regular full from. You are intended to use this with crop mode turned on but I actually really like the look of full frame as the fixed hood and fringing on the hood’s edge make for a really nice effect. While in my tests the photos are not super crisp by professional standards I still consider it great quality. Photos are straight from camera shot at f/11.0.
