To bravely go: how technology inspired by science fiction is influencing events in the future

Every invention has inspiration, and as any science fiction enthusiast will tell you, the future is the most inspiring place, particularly in terms of technology. Indeed, when considering some of the best works in the genre, we can see that each one has awed both readers and viewers with its portrayal of future technology. But now we live in a world where many seemingly unattainable ideas have been realized by scientists, technicians, and artists using their creativity and vision.

While it’s true that science fiction has a direct influence on the technology we use today, it’s also reasonable to suggest that event planners directly benefit from this innovative attitude. After all, these are experts who are constantly combining cutting-edge technology with limitless creativity to produce immersive and imaginative event experiences. They are a combination of craftsmen and creatives. Finding the inspiration behind the innovation is a worthwhile endeavor, even though it is easy to see that sci-fi-inspired technology is now ingrained in today’s event landscape.

Therefore, from “Star Trek” and “Star Wars” to “Blade Runner” and “Back to the Future” — from video conferencing and artificial intelligence to biometric scanning and wearable technology — it’s time to examine how science fiction has influenced the events industry as a whole and, more significantly, learn how industry professionals are utilizing these realities to create new event experiences.

Rewinding to the Future: From Classic Science Fiction to Technological Advancements

However, it pays to look back if you truly want to get a sense of what may happen in the future. We might begin with any number of well-known science fiction works, but “Star Trek” is without a doubt one of the most recognizable brands in the genre. After making its television premiere in 1966, the show quickly gained widespread popularity, inspiring innumerable Vulcan salutes, armies of Klingon speakers, and generations of trekkies. Aside from its cultural influence, the series is noteworthy from a technological point of view. For instance, it made video calling possible, which is now a perfectly ordinary idea in 2024. The following “Star Trek: The Next Generation” series took up the technology after the original franchise ended in the middle of the 1970s. Captain Picard and his crew are frequently seen using tablet-style computers or, in a foreshadowing of virtual reality and augmented reality, manipulating reality through the ubiquitous holodeck.
