Fantastic Entry Level GPS Drone – let’s break it down!
These days I only write reviews for products that I really like or really hate. Thankfully this review is about really, really liking the F22 drone. I purchased it mainly for the follow me function while mountain biking as well as an interesting selfie camera. I did not expect too much because of the price point (which is about 1/3 the cost of the nearest competitor with the same features) but figured that if it did half of what it says it can do I would be happy. So far I have tested all of the capabilities except waypoint navigation and I was very impressed, here is a breakdown:GPS GUIDENCE: Getting the drone connected to your phone through wifi and then connecting to satellites is a bit cumbersome but after a few times it became fairly quick and easy. Usually takes me about 2-3 minutes for the phone wifi to connect and then another minute for satellites to connect. Once that is accomplished (FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS) you are ready to fly. The drone will idle with props turning until you take off then it will hold a steady position until you tell it to do something else.ORBIT: I found this mode to be the most useful and most fun. Setting the distance and altitude takes about 5 seconds and the drone will fly in a circle (however large you set it) while keeping the camera trained on the center. Super cool for selfies or group photos and videos.FOLLOW ME: Mixed results. It will follow you but from what I can tell the drone needs to be fairly high in the air and wind will impact how well it keeps the camera trained on you. I was hoping to keep the drone close to me (about 20 feet away and 10 feet high) but it had trouble following me accurately. I am guessing that when it is higher it is much easier to follow an object because there is less flight adjustmentTRACKING: This is the second most useful mode. It works wonderfully. After you have the drone in the air you can draw a square around the object you want to track and the drone will stay in a stationary position while keeping the camera pointed at whatever you drew a square around. Super cool and works beautifully.HEADLESS: If you want to fly the drone around and you are like me and have a nasty habit of crashing into things you want to enable the one touch Headless mode. That will make the drone go in whatever direction you move the joystick REGARDLESS OF WHICH WAY THE DRONE IS POINTING. It’s the only way to fly and just have fun.TAKE OFF / LANDING: This feature works perfectly although landing takes quite a while to get the drone on the ground.RETURN TO HOME: This enables the drone to automatically return to the place from which it took off. Works great to get the drone back to the general area but it takes forever for it to actually land. I usually hit the return button, let it get close then bring it down manually and hover it so that I can grab it and then hit the emergency stop and all props stop.CAMERA: I was impressed with the picture and video quality, again maybe because I wasn’t expecting much. It is a fisheye lens and is on a gimbal that you can move remotely up and down. You also get a real-time image of what the drone sees on your phone, which is really nice for framing shots.CAUTIONARY NOTE: Do not land or take off on sand. The sand gets into the motors instantly and will destroy them. Also be very careful not to crash the drone on its camera, which is very easy to scratch or break.Picture / Video: Super impressed with the video quality but then again I wasn’t expecting much. It will take pictures and video directly to your phone, which is awesome. At the same time it will save the same pictures and videos on to a micro SD card. I found that the media recorded directly to the SD card is of much higher quality than the same media recorded to the phone.GEEKS ONLY: The pictures recorded to the phone and SD card are jpg files and the SD card versions are about twice the size as the phone versions. The video however is saved on the phone as an mp4 file while on the SD card they are avi files. Again the files on the SD card are bigger and of higher quality. Conclusion: This is a relatively inexpensive drone that has all the capabilities of more expensive models and is a great way to get into drone photography and flight. After some familiarization it is fairly easy to use and the advanced features of the drone are also easy to initiate after you have played with it for a while. This drone delivered on every promise made and I could not be happier with this purchase.UPDATE: I finally figured out how to activate the follow me mode (or at least I think I did). You must first activate the tracking mode (which keeps the camera pointed at you ), THEN activate the follow me mode. I am guessing both need to be active so the tracking points the camera while the follow me mode follows the controller.

Amazing beginner drone with some Wi-Fi connectivity issues. You also have to register the drone with the FAA.
Important notice: You have to register this drone with the FAA ($25 currently for 3 years) and there may be numerous restrictions depending on your city and state. There are literally nearly no locations to fly this drone where I live because of military bases, airports, hospitals with heliports, schools, and very little open space. Before you buy a drone like this, check out what rules there are in your city or region. It can make getting such a fun drone like this no fun at all. I could be wrong, but I think you can fly these on BLM or National Forest lands, but State Parks and National Parks are strictly forbidden and fines are hefty.I have always wanted a drone since I was given a small helicopter drone for Christmas a few years ago. It was great to fly inside, but it was pretty fragile and the battery didn’t last long. I had done research on drones in this price range and this seemed like the best fit for the price. Some of the other drones don’t have a carrying case, only have a 720p camera, or both. This was very easy to set up and the manuals were written quite well considering it’s a Chinese company. Sometimes you get horribly written manuals from Chinese companies, so this was a pleasant surprise. There are also a few great YouTube videos to show you how to get this set up. My biggest beef with this is that my phone (Pixel XL) has a hard time connecting to the app with Wi-Fi. The drone is fun to fly without FPV, but it is so much more fun with FPV, and it requires you connect to the F18’s Wi-Fi to use. I had to reset the drone four times and forget the network on my phone three times to get it to work one day.I’m really glad they provided a second set of propellers because I hit my fence after the second time I took off in my backyard. Getting the controls down isn’t that difficult, but you really should do it in an open area that’s free of any obstructions. I haven’t tried the headless mode yet, and I’ve only lost track of the drone once. I used the Return To Home and it worked extremely well (typically lands within 5-10 feet of where it took off). The emergency Return To Home works just as well. I can only get about 13-15 minutes of airtime with the drone, so I might consider getting a backup battery at some point.Flying the drone is a lot of fun. I saw that it can fly up to 20 MPH which is pretty impressive for a drone that’s not for racing. The camera takes great pictures, but since it doesn’t have image stabilization, it’s hard to keep it extremely still to take shots. To really get great pictures, you need a drone with a GoPro or similar camera with 3 axis gimbals and that brings you up into the $500-600 dollar range at minimum. If you want to take decent pictures, you also need a micro SD card because it is very difficult to tap the photo button in the app on your phone to take pictures that get stored to your phone. With the SD card, you just short press the button on the controller for a snapshot and long press for a video and it’s stored to the SD card. This probably should go without saying, but this can be an extremely dangerous piece of gear. If you run into someone or something, it can cause some serious damage to both the drone and the thing it hits. The motors are extremely strong and responsive and could probably at least break a finger at full prop speed. The acceleration upwards is amazing, but the descent can take quite a bit of time. This is probably because of the GPS feature and it takes quite a while for the drone to descend when in Return to Home mode. If you’re in emergency Return to Home, you don’t have the option of controlling the drone, so again it’s really important to take off in a spot without obstructions. The LED’s are nice for keeping track of the drone and to tell you what status the drone is in. You have to calibrate the drone by rotating it horizontally 3 times and vertically three times and then wait 2-3 minutes for GPS to get above 7 (which is required for Return to Home and stable hovering). I’ve flown it on a fairly calm day and a day with 10-15 MPH winds and it did well with both. It is obviously harder to fly with wind and the battery drains much faster. If I could just get consistent Wi-Fi connectivity, I would have given this 5 stars. I have a feeling that I will outgrow this drone relatively quickly, but my pocketbook won’t be growing at the same time so I’m currently very happy with this drone!

    Good little quad overall
The media could not be loaded.

Got this on a whim, have wanted a little more advanced quad that the ones we have currently. We currently have a few minis, a Syma X5C-1, and a UDI U818A but those are more toys than real quads. Haven’t used them in a while because they need near perfect flying conditions outside. While the F22 may also be considered a toy it is a step up from the others we have. We were looking for one that didn’t need “perfect” weather to fly in.First try using it was not the best, but we charged the battery back up and my younger son took it for another try.He had much better success the second go. Today was use #3, and we have some video/pics to share. Here is our review after a third use:Initial use – 3 stars – initially it was a little cumbersome to setup. Instructions on the phone are a little hard to follow as you’re setting it up. There is the instruction booklet with it but that is also not the clearest. It gets a little better with use, our third try was definitely a good outing.Controls/controller – 4 stars – The controller is a little small but it handles the job of allowing control of the quad pretty nicely. However, I have an iPhone 8 with an Otterbox case and I could not put my phone in the holder. My son’s phone (an SE?) fits well and I have an older 6 with no case that fits ok-ish. Just something to think about. After a few minutes of use my son had it down pretty well.Flying – 5 stars – this thing flies well. It turns nicely, flies in a straight line if you calibrate it properly. It has pretty good speed.Extra features – 5 stars – I know these may be normal on most quads now but the extra features on the F-22 are worth 5 stars. The flight limits, which limit altitude, distance from controller, etc. are great. The video I attached (unfortunately I can only attach one) shows the quad hitting the “wall” before we figured that setting out. Where is “backs up” is where it hit the range limit and actually came back to where we were. We have lost quads before because of it flying out of range so this is a great feature for us. Had a little trouble getting the follow me to work properly but that may have been our fault so I can’t mark off for that yet. The routing feature was pretty cool, seemed to follow the route we laid out although it was not a complicated one.Camera – 3 stars – the camera takes a decent pic/video but as you can see it is not the greatest. Good enough for us but it does get pixelated at times. Maybe it is how we are recording but overall I have to give the camera feature just a 3.Battery – 4 stars – definitely gets about 15 minutes worth of use, would have liked to have seen just a little more time. Going to get an extra battery to give us a half hour total time. So, let’s add it up – 3+4+5+5+3+4=24/6 categories =Overall – 4 stars – a fun little quad, a solid 4 star rating for it.I would recommend buying it (especially if you can get it for $125 or less like we did). An extra battery seems to be essential as the flight time is about 15 minutes so 2 would give you 30 mins total. You don’t want to push it more than that, however, these little motors on these things can’t handle extended periods of time running full bore. I may get another one so we can try racing them.

  4. Drone Pilot

Easy setup, sturdy build, an excellent buy for the money.
The Contixo F18 is my first drone, which I received as a Christmas gift. After reading the manual times, I found the assembly of the props easy. You do have to pay attention to the “A” prop and “B” prop positions on the drone as well as the particular screws for each. Paying attention to the direction to tighten the props, i.e., clockwise and counter clockwise is important in order to avoid stripping the screws/prop post. After the assembly, the start up is pretty straight forward. Charge the drone battery for approximately 5 hours and install four new AA batteries in the controller. The next step was a little confusing at first but after watching several videos on YouTube from other F 18 users, it all became clear. I recommend that any new users take the time to watch these videos!Starting the drone was a easy as was the first flight. I do recommend that the new user become familiar with the controller before the inital flight. I also recommend getting in multiple practice flights before pushing limits. The wifi signal on my unit has been exceptional each time out. You do have to wait a couple minutes for what ever number of satellites there are to connect to the remote/F18 before flying. I’ve had my unit up as high as 395 and never lost a bar of the 5 bars of signal strength. The RTH (Return Home) has worked well each time out with my unit. The unit will rise after pushing the RTH button as it hovers above the landing site. This is for GPS positioning. My landings have consistently been within 6 feet of the take off point. I have not yet tested the low battery return home function.I recommend caution when flying in wind speeds of 7 plus mph as the drone will tend to drift. While it does test piloting skills, it can cause a little anxiety. Making sure the GPS mode is on will greatly help prevent drift. I also recommend that when piloting, remember that as the orientation of the drone changes, i.e., north to south, east to west, the control joystick will change. Not paying attention to this could be a problem if the user needs to avoid obstacles quickly. For example, if the drone camera is facing away from you the joystick will work as described, i.e., up is north, down is south, left is east, right is west. If the camera is facing the user, the controls would work in opposite. Sounds a little complicated but not so much as long as the user is paying attention to drone orientation. The headless mode can be helpful with this issue but read the warning about using this mode before turning it on.I read a few concerns about some danger the F18 can pose. I can say from first hand knowledge that you should be aware that the propellers are turning at a very high rpm and can cause serious damage to a finger, or any other part of the body it may come into contact with. The F18 is small but I would not classify it as a child’s toy. For this reason, proceed with caution with small children and pets nearby. First time users would be better to gain skills in an wide open area. If not in the countryside, then a high school football field, etc. when few people are around. The 1080p camera does a better job than I expected. The range is great and for basic photography from above, the quality is fairly good. The camera does okay in low light photography, much better in daylight. The examples are from 300 to approximately 375 ft. The drone holds altitude very well and can hover at any altitude for photography. The camera does well with video photography as well given it is only 1080p. If you want a high resolution camera or at least 16mp, expect to pay $500 or more. For a starter, the camera in the F18 is better than expected. The F18 is a great starter drone especially with its features and for the price. I cannot compare this drone to any other but I have no problem recommending it to someone looking to get started.

    Easy & Enjoyable, Recommended!
When I received the drone, I was really impressed with its size! When folded, it fits in the palm of my hand. I have had small frame drones before and usually within a few weeks their limited range and reliability became more of a burden. But since my first flight with my Contixo F22 I have been a major fan. Here is my breakdown:Travel case – This was included in my purchase, and made transporting the drone simple. No worries about bending the props or landing feet. It has storage for the drone, remote, 3 batteries and a zipper section for cables and papers. Packed up, it is about the size of a school lunch box.Manual – The instruction booklet was easy to understand and outlined the important details. I kept it packed with the drone and found myself referring back to it several times to make sure I understood how each function worked.Drone – Great size for beginners to experienced users. It is easy to unfold and be ready to fly in just a few movements. Unfold the arms, press the power button, and you are ready! Has micro Sd slot for inflight recording and pictures if you are not using the app to do so. The folding blades are a lifesaver. It recovers well if you happen to run into something or clip a tree limb. I accidentally ran into a radio tower and it bounced off and only fell about 10 feet and recovered on its own. The blades are easy to replace just in case.Control – Compact and foldable as well. Unfolds to a comfortable size and has a spring-loaded mount to hold your phone when using the app. Buttons are marked and easy to understand. Camera controls allow you to tilt the camera straight down or straight ahead, or anywhere in-between.App – Many features, you can access the auto features from the flight screen. Also has a flight log which will record your flight height and distance. I enjoyed being able to see how high I was actually flying. Also available are the pictures and videos that you record during flight through the app. My favorite was the GPS flight screen, which allows you to see your current area via a satellite picture. It draws a circle on that screen showing you the available flight area to which you can assign waypoints and send the drone on an “unmanned flight”. You can adjust the size of the circle in the settings. Ie: you can limit how high and how far the drone is allowed to go. This feature was great when I was learning how to use the GPS flight feature.Flight time – This varied depending on current wind conditions and use. On a calm day, I could get 15 minutes or so, on an EXTREMELY windy day, I only got about 8. (That being said, the little drone did a really good job in trying to stay stationary, but I would suggest not flying in really windy conditions. You risk having a gust push it into a tree, etc.)Camera – I attached a few pictures from the unit. While the F20 has a better camera, this one isn’t bad at all. I suggest slow and steady movements for video recording and calm winds for picture taking.Overall I have been extremely satisfied with my purchase and would suggest it to others. I went ahead and purchased 2 extra batteries for my unit and I try to fly it daily. Their customer support department has been great as well. Answered my emails within 24 hours, an extreme plus!Extremely satisfied with my purchase.

My First Drone (F22) – Extremely Happy
I purchased the folding model (F22).This is my first drone so I don’t have much to compare it to. I was initially looking for a drone with three specific features:1) Cheap – I don’t want to be afraid to use it. I also don’t want to feel bad about buying it if I never have time to use it.2) Small – It has to easily fit into my big fanny pack or backpack. Otherwise, I will never bring it anywhere with me.3) Light – I hate having a lot of weight on me when I hike. This drone met all three of these criteria. As I continued reading reviews and watching YouTube videos, I added three more criteria:1) Good Camera – Most of the drones with 1080p cameras have horrible video quality. This one was the best that I could find.2) Adjustable camera – How do you get the shots that you want if the camera is always pointing in the same direction, you can’t. The camera on this drone can move up and down.3) SD Card – Many of the cheap drones record video on you phone, through the WiFi connection. Any lag or interference causes shuddering in the video. I just couldn’t have that. This drone has an SD card so the video is perfect. The video that was recorded to my phone with this drone was also actually perfect. There was no stuttering, but I don’t want to take chances.Setup was pretty easy, just watch videos and read the instructions. I’ve flown for about an hour now and I’m being very cautious. I was flying in an area with weak GPS coverage (even my Garmin was having issues) and the return to home was still pretty accurate. Follow object mode worked well. Follow me seemed to work pretty well, but my phone was having some issues getting a GPS signal, which isn’t the drones fault. The only issues that I’ve had so far are:1) Beeping remote – When I record video using the button on the remote, the remote beeps constantly to let you know that you are recording. It’s annoying to me. Use the APP so that you don’t have to hear the beeping.2) SD Card – My SD card was pre-formatted with exfat. The drone seems to have problems with exfat. All of my videos were corrupt and could not be extracted after my first flight. I reformatted the card using fat32 and everything is fine now. It’s a 64Gig card and Windows will not format a fat32 partition over 32Gig, so I just created a 32Gig partition. I’ll be able to get about 9 hours of video on the card. Good enough for me.3) I did have one small crash on my last flight when I was landing. I don’t know why. Everything is working fine. I don’t know if it was me or the drone or bad GPS coverage or maybe a gust of wind. It was probably me.All in all, I like this drone and I plan to keep it in my big fanny pack when I hike, mountain climb, or rock climb. I may even buy an extra one at some point for my wife or son to play with so that they don’t mess with mine. They are cheap enough and easy enough to fly. I hope that this review helps someone else out in making their decision.

Good trainer drone, but you will likely outgrow it soon
I have had the pleasure to fly a wide array of different drones over the years and thought this would make a good present for a new drone pilot. For the most part, it has been good for that purpose and I would recommend this drone to anyone thinking about getting into more serious flying. It has a lot of the features more expensive drones have, although at a lower quality. But here lies the problem, if you practice, it will not take long until you quickly outgrow it. So be prepared to throw it up on eBay after a month or two.Pro’s:1) Cost is biggest. For $300 you get a drone that has GPS, return to home, FPV FHD camera, and a nice carrying bag.2) Drone is stable – take your hand off the controls and it finds its center. Not nearly as quickly or precise as more expensive models, but this is a key feature for new pilots. It allows you to STOP.3) Good camera quality. Okay… Not 4K, but for me that is usually overkill IHO.4) Good fly time on a battery. I have no problem getting ~20+ minutes on a battery. But still suggest you buy at least one more!!!!5) No issues with remote control reception. I tested ~400-500 feet, but lost sight of the drone at that point and since I did not have FPV working, I brought it home. See CON below.6) Probably subjective, but I really like the looks of the drone.Con’s:1) Biggest issue for me is the 5G WIFI reception that supports the FPV (first person view) is HORRIBLE!!! I have tried in multiple locations and it routinely starts to have the screen freeze on me at 200+ feet. The strange part is if I stop and hover, the live feed will come back to my display – but very spotty at that point. This makes flying dangerous in my opinion and the drone should ALWAYS be in line of sight. Once again, if you are using this as a training drone, you should be doing that anyways. But for experienced pilots, this is a DEAL BREAKER!!!!2) I wish the remote was a little more sensitive. I find it difficult to control the speed. Seems to either want to go full speed or slow.3) No gimbals on the camera. So you get a lot of jerky video when turning. To me, that alone makes any recording unusable. Could be a personal preference.

  8. Dave, Ottawa

    Could be great, but…
Unfortunately, had to return after it shut down midflight the first two times I tried it. Other than that… it tested well.Construction: Not much of a looker, but appears solidly build. Plastic appears a bit “cheap”. Props are driven by geared, mechanically commutated motors (ie not brushless), making it a bit noisy.Remote: Again, looks “cheap”, but it was ergonomic and functioned well. Sticks have a nice feel. Being rechargeable, rather than using AAs, is nice. Phone cradle held my Samsung Galaxy S8 securely.Charging: Can be charged with a standard 2A 5V phone charger. Port is right on the battery itself, so it can be charged either in or out of the drone.Flight Operations: After getting a good compass calibration and GPS lock in a wide open area, drone had a very stable hover in a light breeze. One-touch takeoff and landing worked well. Return-to-home worked well. Fairly agile and fun to fly manually.Connectivity: Able to establish a wifi connection to my phone without issue.Streaming video: Worked well. Slight delay, and the occasional dropped frame, but completely usable.Advanced app functions:Maps: The “Contixo F22” app is supposed to provide Google Maps functionality, but it would not work. Maps would not display at all, regardless of trying the app when connected to the internet or using off-line maps. The SJRC GPS PRO app is virtually identical and worked fine (F22 = SRJC Z5).Follow Me / Track object: Worked as expectedGesture control: Did not attemptCamera: The camera angle can be controlled from the remote. The solenoid which controls this function was noisy, as though it was having difficulty moving the camera. It would continue to make noise even after the camera had stopped, until a click to the opposite direction was made. Does not bode well for the life expectancy of this feature. Fairly wide angle, and can not be zoomed.Photos: Photos saved to an on-board MicroSD card were 2048×1152. A little grainy, but not bad at all.Videos: Also 2048×1152. When recorded with drone stationary, video is quite stable, but obviously without a gimbal, as the drone moves, so will the video.Bottom line: A Mavic Mini 2, this is not, but, it’s also about 1/3 the price. If it wasn’t a defective unit, I would have kept, enjoyed, and recommended it for what it is. It’s not a toy, but neither is it a true aerial camera platform. It’s half-way in between, and it’s an excellent value if you get a good one.

  9. Sebastian Knaus

Great for the price, but might do its own thing.
For the most part, an overall great deal. Had to search YouTube to learn how to start the thing, as the instructions weren’t totally clear. I would not say this is for beginners, unless they’ve tried either other drones, or played video games which you need to gently tap the controls. My main complaint is it will randomly lose control (even when the battery isn’t at 25% or lower). Because of that, my drone has crashed, which cause performance issues with one of the motors, and because of that even fell into a lake. Thankfully I retrieved it, but need to assess if it still works. Definitely better for wide open spaces void of water, but you might still lose it when it randomly drifts off.

    Best Product & Customer Service!
I could NOT be more satisfied with Contixo. As a first-time drone buyer, I was nervous about finding the right product for a Christmas gift, but Jerry at Contixo went above and beyond to help me find the right product. I ended up getting both the F17+ and F18 for recipients with different needs. At this point, I’ve spent a couple months researching drones, and both the F17+ and F18 are the only two drones with all the following features:- Under $500 (I broadened my search to up to $500, but Contixo was still the best for what I was looking for)- Compatible travel/storage case- High quality camera: 4k camera (F17+) or 1080p camera (F18)- Extended battery life (nearly ~20 min. ea)- Brushless motors- Lights for night flying/general awesomeness- Attractive design- Excellent reviews(Although both models have many more awesome features, I was looking for this specific combination)Since these are Christmas presents, I haven’t been able to play with them yet. However! I want to give a specific and well-deserved shout out to Contixo’s business model and customer service. There are so many companies that produce drones; I knew there was a spectrum of customer service quality that went along with the many options the internet has to offer. But simply due to the extraordinary experience I had with Contixo over the past two months, I have complete confidence in their products going forward.Responsive – Per the suggestion from another Contixo customer review, I reached out via messenger on their Facebook page. I didn’t expect a response, but heard back in an hour! Every time I messaged, I heard back in an hour or much sooner.Accessible – No red tape. Hit up their Facebook page or give them a ring and you’ll get to speak to a real live human ASAP. No robots. No holding music.Above and beyond helpful – I had a lot of questions for Jerry and he answered every single one with much more info than expected. He even gave me his direct line so he could hear out my concerns. Turns out, Jerry isn’t even in the Customer Service department—he just wanted to help me! To top it off, I decided I wanted to swap out one of the F17+’s I bought for an F18, but it was past the return window. I asked Jerry if he had any suggestions, and he is having Contixo issue me a full refund! No hassle, just a 5 minute phone call. Now if that isn’t a culture of customer service, I don’t know what is.________Update:Both the F17 and F18 have been fantastic hits with their recipients. The features, power, and control are all awesome. Set up and usage for both have been very user friendly thus far. Unfortunately, after a week of successful flying, the F18 malfunctioned and plummeted into a river despite full battery, 15 satellites connected, and less than a 100 foot range. We were devastated when we were unable to retrieve it, but Contixo again came to the rescue with their fantastic customer service.I was able to speak with Jerry about our malfunction and how to prevent something similar in the future. After asking detailed questions about our experience, he assured us that this should have not happened. He also pointed out that although it seemed to be an issue with the drone itself, it may have been an error on the remote side. Thanks to Jerry and Contixo’s outstanding customer service, Contixo will be sending us a replacement drone and remote. We could not be happier and look forward to many more flights with our Contixo F18!
