Efficient Lense
Fully compatible with nikon z5 camera.Fast autofocus and sharp pictures.Thogh I have not used Nikon z 85 mm 1.8 lense but it’s quality is not much below than that.You will have to look the cost too.Its about half of Nikon’s price. Lense is made of metal and little heavy but not much in length. Time will tell it’s durability. Looking the price and quality of pictures I gave 5 stars.

Budget-Porträt-AF
Vorweg: Wahrscheinlich ist das Nikon-Z-Objektiv noch etwas besser, aber es kostet auch das Doppelte. Fangen wir mal an:Filtergröße 72 mm, das sind 5 mm mehr als beim Nikon. Das Objektiv besteht vollständig aus Metall und fühlt sich durchaus wertig und solide an. Lediglich die Streulichtblende ist besteht aus Kunststoff, wirkt nicht sehr wertig uns läßt sich etwas hakelig aufsetzen. Bedienelemente sucht man bis auf den breiten Ring zu Entfernungseinstellung vergeblich. Man kann mit dem Ring jederzeit die Entfernung manuell fokussieren und das wird da im Sucher auch entsprechend angezeigt. Eine Entfernungsskala außen am Objektiv gibt es nicht. Ebenso gibt es keine Gummilippe am Bajonettanschluss, der dafür einen Mini-USB-Anschluss zu Einspielen der Firmware aufweist.Das Einspielen der Firmware ist kinderleicht: Objektiv am PC / Mac anschließen, das DAT-File auf das Laufwerk ziehen, das das Objektiv repräsentiert. Das Objektiv startet kurz durch und meldet sich danach mit einem Textfile, das die Version anzeigt.Ich benutze das Objektiv hauptsächlich bei der Anfangsblende. Dabei kann man ein ganz schönes Bokeh erzielen und in der Mitte sind die Bilder ordentlich scharf, wobei es hier noch Luft nach oben gäbe. Für den Einsatzzweck Porträtobjektiv reicht das jedoch völlig aus. In den Ecken sieht es nicht so toll aus, wobei man hier noch eine halbwegs scharfe Abbildung mit CAs bekommt. Abblenden verbessert die Schärfeleistung etwas in der Mitte und etwas deutlicher am Rand.Der Autofokus ist hinreichend genau und schnell, bei sich schneller bewegenden Objekten kommen Objektiv und Kamera – Nikon Z7 in meinem Fall – nicht so gut hinterher. Das Nikon 14-30 /f4 ist hier weitaus schneller. Nicht ganz so überzeugend finde ich den Tieraugenautofokus an der Z7; er scheint nicht sauber zu treffen.Ich halte das Objektiv ingesamt für eine sehr gut brauchbare Alternative zum Nikon Originalobjektiv. Fotografiert man professionell Porträts, sollte man das Objektiv mit den Nikon-Originalobjektiv vergleichen und dann entscheiden. Für mich reicht das Viltrox-Objektiv.

Great lens that lack S contrast
Great lens. Video autofocus is just as good as S lenses and better than the 24-50mm. Works like a native lens. Its very sharp at F2.8 and good at F2.2-2.5. Compared to the 85mm S and the 50mm S, you can see the contrast difference at all apertures below F4. If you’re only shooting family or you don’t use 85mm very often—you will be very happy with this for nice pics with nice bokeh. At F2.8 and above, its hard to tell the difference. But If you’re a pro, and exclusively shoot at F1.8 or have alternatives. You will find urself grabbing the other lens.

Nice sharp lens with great bokeh
Functions fully with my Z 6ii. Focus is spot on with a nice bokeh – just starting to use it a bit more now but no issues so far!

For a 3rd party manufacturer’s first attempt to make a Nikon Z lens – I’m very impressed.The quality and construction are top-notch. It’s all metal. The speed and accuracy of the autofocus easily match my Nikon 24-70 F4 S lens and it’s just as quiet. Would love to compare it to the Nikon 85 1.8S but for half the price, this lens is quite the bargain! The only critical thing I can say is the plastic hood. It could be improved on – especially the mounting/dismounting, but that’s me being nitpicky. A metal hood would be the bomb.

My eye af works fine. I’m using z50 but my outputs came out out of focus. Most of my photos are hit or miss.

Very impressive for their first AF lens on the Z Bodies.
AF is great considering this is a third party lens and one of the first of its kind for the Z System. Exciting times for Viltrox!UPDATE 15/3/21: Unfortunately this lens failed on its first proper outing but this is the first time i’ve ever had anything fail in this manner so will temporarily downgrade the rating to 3/5 stars until a new one can be offered in return. It stopped being recognised by the camera body and my computer wouldn’t read the lens when i tried to update the firmware. Its a new lens on a still relatively new mount so i’d like to see if maybe I just got a bad lens as i’ve seen its had glowing reviews elsewhere.
