L-Acoustics spatial audio powers Beatport’s intimate LA performance space

Background and context

Beatport, a long-established digital platform for electronic music, has taken a further step into live events with a dedicated performance space at its downtown Los Angeles headquarters. The venue, Beatport Live LA, hosts a monthly series of free shows in an intimate room where the audience stands close to the DJ booth.

The space is designed as a small-scale counterpoint to festival and superclub environments where many of the visiting artists normally perform. Recent guests have included SOFI TUKKER, Odd Mob, Beltran, SIDEPIECE, Aluna, and Kaleena Zanders, alongside emerging local DJs.

From the outset, Beatport’s goal was to prioritise sound quality and proximity between artists and fans, rather than large-scale production. That brief led the company to install a spatial audio system built around L-Acoustics DJ, the manufacturer’s real-time spatial mixing platform for DJs.

Key announcement

At Beatport Live LA, L-Acoustics DJ sits at the centre of the booth, giving performers the option to present traditionally mixed stereo sets in a three-dimensional sound field. The system separates each playing track into stems using machine-learning algorithms and allows drums, vocals and melodic elements to be positioned around the room in real time.

L-Acoustics DJ was announced in 2025 and began shipping this year. At Beatport Live LA, the setup consists of an L-Acoustics DJ Controller and an iPad running the companion app, positioned next to the primary mixer so guest DJs can access it immediately. Artists can either experiment with spatialisation on the fly or build entire performances around the technology.

The loudspeaker configuration is a 6.1 system built from the L-Acoustics ecosystem. Two Syva columns over Syva Low units flank the DJ booth as main speakers, with four X12 coaxial loudspeakers flown along the sides and rear of the audience for surround coverage. Low-frequency extension comes from two KS21 subwoofers, while four X8 cabinets are dedicated to delivering spatial sound to the DJ position.

The system is powered by two LA12X amplified controllers and managed by a P1 processor, with spatial processing handled by an L-ISA Processor II core. RAT Sound Systems completed the installation, and Lumina Production Services manages audio production for the ongoing series, including the first fully spatial show in January 2026. Industry impact

This deployment positions Beatport Live LA as a testbed for spatial DJ performance in a compact venue format. The combination of a club-scale room and an immersive mix environment allows touring artists, who typically play through conventional stereo systems, to adapt their existing sets without changing their workflow.

From a production perspective, the installation demonstrates how spatial audio can be implemented as an enhancement to standard DJ rigs, rather than as a separate, bespoke show design. Visiting performers can arrive with their usual playlists and still deliver an immersive experience, which lowers barriers to adoption.

Beyond the in-room audience, Beatport streams the series worldwide in binaural audio, extending spatial elements to headphone listeners. This approach illustrates how immersive setups can support both physical events and long-tail digital content, an increasingly important consideration for promoters and brands.

Why this matters

For venue operators and event technologists, Beatport Live LA highlights several trends. First, spatial audio is moving beyond large-scale installations into small and mid-size rooms where audience proximity is a key part of the experience. Second, tools like L-Acoustics DJ show a path for integrating immersive sound into standard DJ workflows without requiring pre-produced multitrack content.

The project also underscores the strategic link between in-person events and online distribution. By capturing spatially mixed sets and streaming them in binaural format, Beatport extends the reach of each show and builds a reusable content library, while using the Los Angeles venue as a template for future locations.

As Beatport explores rolling out similar spaces in other cities, sound system design remains the defining element of the format. For the wider events industry, the Beatport Live LA model suggests that compact, high-spec immersive rooms could become a viable addition to the traditional club and festival landscape, especially when tied to strong digital platforms.
