Gamification: a positive addition to the event’s experience or a hindrance?

The goal of gamification is to increase involvement by applying game elements to non-game situations, such as digital events and websites. Gamification has been implemented by many event planners as an additional immersive experience. So is gamification a passing trend or a genuine one? Games at events are meant to instruct, amuse, and engage. But does gamification improve attendees’ experiences or detract from the fundamental goals of the event?
