Description
The Blackmagic Design Audio to SDI 4K Mini Converter allows you to embed four channels of analog audio or eight channels of AES/EBU digital audio into any SDI video signal. It features a 6G-SDI input that accepts resolutions up to Ultra HD (3840×2160) and DCI 4K (4096×2160), and provides four 1/4″ audio jack connectors for inputting and embedding your analog or digital audio channels. The SDI signal with embedded audio is output over a single 6G-SDI connector, with the resolution and frame rate matching the original input source. The Mini Converter’s settings are controlled using the built-in DIP switches or via USB using the included software for Max OS X or Windows computers. The USB port also enables the firmware to be updated. For powering the device, a 12 VDC power supply is included with international socket adapters. Using 6G-SDI technology, the Mini Converter supports UHD and DCI 4K resolutions at up to 30 fps. The Mini Converter also supports Single Link SD, HD, and 3G-SDI signals, automatically detecting and switching between the different formats. A redundant SDI input is provided as an optional back up; with the converter switching over if the main SDI input is lost.

Mostly a great product
This product works well, aside from some of the usual Blackmagic Design quirks.It does do absolutely what it is supposed to do: replace the embedded audio in an SDI video signal. Connect the source video, make the audio connections, then connect the output, and you’re good to go. If you need to change which channels are replaced, or switch to AES/EBU instead of analog audio, you flip some DIP switches on the side and you’re off to the races.The trouble is that, every once in a while, just like many of BMD’s other products, it refuses to work. Perhaps it is weird fluctuations in the power when being turned on (as might be present if turned on with a whole rack of gear), perhaps it’s the phase of the moon.. who knows. But every once in a while it requires power cycling to function properly. Not a big deal if you know to check for it, and how to work around it, but it would be nice if we just didn’t have to deal with these issues.Ultimately, the product does what it is supposed to do. It does run a little warm, but that isn’t the end of the world. Just be aware that it may power cycling every now and then.

Working as expected!Recently upgraded our video productions to full HD with Blackmagic ATEM Television Studio from our old composite S-video system. I needed this mini converter to convert my analogue audio signal from my studio audio mixer into digital audio through SDI. It’s working perfectly. Thanks to Blackmagic Tech team also for their help when it was needed.
