Great picture coupled with mediocre firmware = low value IP camera
The media could not be loaded.
I decided to take a chance on Reolink despite mixed reviews across their product line. I upgraded from a Foscam FI8921W v2 camera; a mere 1.3 MP camera. The E1 Zoom is a huge step up in video quality. However, I found the setup, to put it kindly, awkward. Its fairly simple, but I didn’t appreciate the loud distorted sqwaking voice that sounded like a broken NJ Transit speaker in the late evening. The provided documentation is rather sparse. The Good:The picture quality is very good as is the video. The audio leaves something to be desired but it is a feature I wouldn’t really plan on using anyway. I used Reolink’s tech support and they were very responsive and helpful, but didn’t resolve my issue that is a deficiency in their firmware and I address that below. I found the camera to work well in the dark too.The Bad:I found a lot of aspects within the firmware to be entirely mediocre. Here is a list of firmware issues I have encountered::1) I am surprised that the microSD card only purpose is to store vdeo when motion is detected. In every other brand of IP camera I have used, one can select the camera to take a picture and store it on the camera at regular intervals often between 5-65535 seconds. This is highly desirable because the camera is Wifi only. Its incredibly lazy of Reolink to do this since the base functionality is there in the firmware. You will either have to use FTP or 3rd party software; this reduces the value of the camera. A 5 min clip at full resolution of 2560 x 1920 at only 2fps the lowest you can go, it consumes about 155MB. The max capacity microSD you can use is 64GB. You’ll run out of space really fast so why the heck not store photos at 5, 10, 30, 60 intervals. The jpeg photos of same resolution are under 500kB.2) Reolink states the Wifi is stable. I adamantly disagree. My shed is approximately 200m away and it is connected via single mode fiber to between two Cisco 3560CX switches. I have a Cisco wireless environment: a WLC 5520 with older 2702i APs. I see the AP’s algorithm is to choose 5Ghz. There is no option on the client to choose a band; that would have been nice. This is annoying. Take this into account in your environment. Most prosumer/consumer dual band APs do have seperate SSIDs for 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz. Since my shed is far away its not a big deal for me to have it on 5Ghz but I wouldn’t want that running in your home environment. Why you ask? Because this is camera operates at 802.11n and it will slow down 802.11ac devices; not something desirable if you put in the expense of of having an AC router with AC clients. I typically reserve 2.4Ghz for low priority devices and that is what this device is to me. I would not entrust my security to this device for anything critical. I have experienced multiple wireless drops with a SNR of -51 dB which is excellent. I have included pictures where these drops occurred I lost connect to the camera on multiple occasions using the Reolink client and Blue Iris v5 demo.On my WLC and Spectrum analyzer I have no wireless interference whatsoever my noise floor is around -97dbm – My shed is far away from any neighbor’s home so there is no 5 Ghz interference. I noticed a significant amount of duplicate packets and data retries. This device purportedly has MIMO antennas which should cut down on multipath. It is the sole 5Ghz client on the AP therefore I conclude there is an issue with their wireless driver. I noticed several of my photos missing data. Again saving it directly to the microSD card would mitigate this issue altogether. Here is my wireless environment:(Cisco Controller) >show AP auto-RF 802.11a SHED-inNumber Of Slots……………………………. 2AP Name…………………………………… SHED-inMAC Address……………………………….. 84:b2:61:45:a4:98 Slot ID…………………………………. 1 Radio Type………………………………. But why bother sacrificing one after what I explained the issues. Its apparent Reolink put this in just so they can say they have it too. It practically serves no purpose. Oh if you do manage to overcome the issues above, there appears to be no means with which to access the files on the microSD card so that will be really fun accessing it instead of having the card easily accessible in the base.Based upon this experience I am totally reconsidering the Reolink brand. I purchased two; opening one to test. I am returning the unopened box and looking for a better value camera because this ain’t it.

Excellent baby camera
The primary function I have for this camera is baby monitoring through Xeoma. I gotta say, especially for the price, this camera works well, at least once you have it dialed in. I started off with the slightly cheaper version, but found it wasn’t quite doing what I needed. The pros of this camera you just won’t find anywhere else for this price are:1. Fairly high resolution.2. Full PTZ functions for both movement and zooming.3. Colors are really good.4. Clarity is really good.5. Onvif compliant.6. Two way audio.7. Works well over WiFi.If you are curious what this has gotten me over the slightly cheaper version more exactly:1. Slightly bigger.2. Zoom. This is actually quite a significant feature.3. Slower response to switch between day and night mode. Actually where this is mounted in the house and with it zoomed all the way in, it is almost always in night mode, which is adequate for the need it is serving.4. Speaker for two way communication seems slightly louder. The big reason why I really wanted this camera over the cheaper version was from my cell phone it could be hard to tell if the baby’s eyes were open. Sometimes he thrashes around some while sleeping, but if his eyes open, that means he is awake and I need to attend to him. However if his eyes are closed, he usually settles down and all is good for a while longer. (It seems he is dreaming a fair amount.) Xeoma allows doing a digital zoom, but an optical is much better as it can be hard to use the zoom feature right on the go. The digital zoom is really best for stationary use. Actually using a combination of optical zoom and digital zoom as the optical is good enough to have the whole crib in view and not much else while I use the digital zoom to have the baby fill the viewing area in the subsection of the crib he is in. The clarity of this combination is very good and I am able to either see if his eyes are open from a cell phone or a reasonably sized window on my desktop monitors so I can have everything up on my screens at once as I work from home. While everything is working good enough for baby monitoring so far after some tweaking of settings, it has taken some fiddling to get it to work right. For one I made sure to select TCP transport as all of this goes over WiFi. If you set / default to UDP, things will look really bad as packets will get lost and there is no way around that with WiFi except for using a TCP transport. Second I needed to turn on the back light mode when zoomed in or else the picture would be way under exposed. However these options are there, so then it was just a matter of using the motorized movement of the camera while on its mounting point to point it at the crib and zoom in. At this the wide angle on this camera is wider than the cheaper model and the aspect ratio is more squarish. This makes the optical only zoom not quite what I had hoped for, but it is good enough to see if the baby’s eyes are open without having to use the digital zoom in Xeoma. As for digital zooming, it looks a lot more crisp with this camera than the cheaper version, so yeah, see every detail up close. The mic on both of these cameras is a bit lack luster, but I can make out the louder sounds the baby makes, which is enough to know if the baby needs immediate attention even if my wife has the more traditional baby monitor instead of it being with me. Really having the traditional baby monitor around is really useful as it picks up everything, so I can be deep in work and hear every little stir the baby makes and am well aware when it is time to say set up for feeding where with the camera audio alone I have to keep a close eye on the video feed to pick up hints it is getting time to do something for the baby. Really the audio on this camera is more of if the baby needs attention right now, that is when you finally hear something. Also with two way, Xeoma does not support audio in the other direction, so have to fire up the Reolink app. The two way audio deal is more of something my wife likes to use anyway where I just go into the room and do if something needs to happen.I really kind of wish I could wire this in, especially as it is mounted right next to an Ethernet switch optimized for video traffic, but sadly I can’t. At least this place is heavily wired in now, I have multiple WiFi APs to provide great WiFi coverage, and I can use a TCP transport for this camera, so it should work reliably and so far has.

Reolink Better Than Foscam
I am removing what’s left of our old Foscam security camera system and replacing them with an all-Reolink indoor/outdoor, whole-house security camera system. During this latest purchase, I ordered four renewed E1 Zoom 5MP PTZ indoor cameras from Amazon and another online source. First, I love the 5MP video clarity of this specific model, the 3x optical zoom and human/pet auto-tracking features. Interestingly, two arrived with no ethernet ports (older model), one had the ethernet port and I connected it to one of my Tp-Link WiFi extenders in my home office room; the last one I had to return for a refund because Amazon sent me the wrong Reolink camera – the Lumus (sigh). I ordered an E1 Zoom replacement and I am hoping they send me the newer model with the ethernet port as I plan in mounting that one in my garage connected to one of my Tp-Link Wifi extenders.

Absolutely amazing camera!
The video quality is hands down the best I’ve seen yet, and I’ve purchased a handful of different brands like Ring, Eufy, Lorex, etc! ReoLink is by far the best in both day time and low light! Notifications are extremely quick when it detects motion, and click on it opens the live view very fast! Build quality is superb and the setup was effortless! Loved it so much I bought 2 more from them and I plan on buying more in the future! Regret that I didn’t make the invest on their cameras sooner, I’ve wasted so much time and money with other brands and wished I came across them earlier! Highly recommend, you won’t be disappointed!!

Great cameras for the price
Using 2 of these inside my home. There’s no documentation for these but they were relatively easy to setup and they work great without any internet connection. There is a desktop app (that’s not mentioned by Reolink or the doc) that I needed to install in order to configure these and set them up with Blue Iris.

Really Great Camera (with a couple minor complaints)
Ok! SO – This Reolink E1 Zoom is excellent! It is totally worth the few extra dollars over the Reolink E1 Pro. I purchased the “Pro” first because I felt that a digital zoom would be fine…it is not – the clarity is simply not there…for my needs, anyway. I breed/show Papillon dogs, and I keep a close eye on my girls when we are on puppy watch.SO…my first cam was the Victure 1080P Pet Camera – which was fabulous & I loved nearly everything about it, but never could connect it wirelessly to our…wifi. I was annoyed having an ethernet cable that was draped all over the house…so…I was on the hunt for a camera that would easily connect to our wifi. The Reolink did not disappoint…once I found the E1 Zoom (the digital zoom on the Pro was just too crummy) all was great in my world!Pros for the E1 Zoom: – Set-up is a cinch – The real zoom! The clarity & quality are awesome! If these features are important to you, do not even bother with the E1 Pro….it is not a “pro” – the name lulls you into thinking the camera quality is above their other options…this is wrong. Completely wrong. – The ease of set-up on ALL Reolinks are hard to beat…SO easy using the QR code on the camera! – Price – it’s hard to beat for the quality you get (see my photos)Cons for the E1 Zoom: – I do not like that in order to adjust the any of the views of the camera, that you have to tap on the icon/feature to bring up the menu/bring up the icons to adjust the camera (ie to pan the camera left/right or up/down…and/or zoom in/out. – I really miss the ability to pan 100* (like I could on my Victure) – the Reolink only has a 50* verticle (up/down) pan. This means that you can only look up and down just so far…this may not be important to some, but it is very important to me for what I use the camera for.Overall, I am happy with this camera. Very happy….I just wish that the vertical pan and its app functions were better.

meh ….
Wow, where to start. Maybe I’ll just do a pro and con review.Cons:Setup is a nightmare. The camera squawks at you in several languages as it struggles to scan. When it won’t detect the app, the camera continues squawking very loudly (not adjustable) on an endless loop until the app detects the camera. It was so annoying that I had to move it to another room so I could read why it wasn’t working. The client (desktop software) for windows is a NIGHTMARE. It won’t connect, asks for a password that is non-existent. I did not set up a password and their admin password as per support didn’t work. I still can’t get the client to work. Worse, when you delete the software off of your computer, it doesn’t 100% go away. When I reinstalled the software, a fresh install after deleting everything, my previous camera set-up info was still there!! So there are components they put on your computer that will not uninstall! The delay between the camera and app is anywhere from 4 to 10 seconds. The mic hardly picks up anything. You cannot hear anything ppl are saying to you on the other end, but they seem to hear you fine.Support is a joke and so is the support section on their site. If you contact them by email, it goes unanswered – besides the robo response of ‘we will contact you shortly’. I’m still waiting for a response …The website support section is a mess of data lines and links. The lag when using the panning feature is frustrating. If you are trying to follow someone with the camera, you end up holding the pan feature down too long or not enough, so when the image catches up to the camera it has gone too far or not far enough. So to be clear, you push the pan button & nothing happens, so you push it again and it goes way too far. You can’t get used to it, because it’s response is always different. The firmware is not user friendly at all. On the app, if you want to speak to someone when you are on the horizontal view of the camera, you cannot. You have to toggle back to the tiny portrait view, click to another view, then find the mic button. Not convenient at all if you want to talk to someone in a time sensitive situation. I have ring cameras and the firmware is far superior … if you can believe that. The motion detection is extremely flawed. It goes off for no reason. The first night I had the camera installed, it went off about 10 times in the middle of the night for nothing (there was nobody in the room). So I tested it and put it into a closet. It still went off randomly. I turned off motion detection so another feature unusable.Pros:The image quality is good. The night vision is only black and white, but clear none-the-less.The zoom feature is pretty good. It enabled me to see what medication tablets my mother left on the table. The panning feature of the camera is almost silent, but the zoom is pretty noisy. So all in all, I am really disappointed. If using the camera continues to frustrate me, it’s going back. I use the camera to monitor an elderly parent. It works OK so far, but the cons above are wearing on my nerves and that is the exact opposite of what anyone would want in any product. So, buy ONLY if you can return this item. If it’s anything like my experience, you’ll want the option.

A Step Up From The No-Name Cameras
The camera’s build quality is significantly higher than most of the off-brand IP cameras sold on Amazon. It has good weight without being heavy, feels solid and operates smoothly. I’ve only had it a very short while, so I can’t speak to longevity issues yet, but I am initially optimistic, This camera has three levels of video quality transmission and has maintained signal integrity better than most other cameras I’ve tried. I have it set on my 2.4 Ghz band and it can send/receive reliably 100 feet and several walls away from my router. Unlike many other off-brands sold here, Reolink encrypts their cameras, so you are not open to anyone in the world to easily sneak peek or hack.As others have stated in their reviews, setup can be tricky if you don’t follow the instructions to the letter. I would suggest setting up a Reolink account (in addition to downloading their app) BEFORE attempting any setup. It will make the process easier. Please understand that this Reolink does not play well with some VPN’s. If you frequently use a VPN, you may find that you’ll have to pause it to complete the camera installation and/or view it live in the Reolink app. During the installation process, you should set your phone to the same band/network you want your camera on. I like the 2.4 Ghz band for its extra range. I believe this camera uses the 80211-n protocol and if you have an 80211-ac or ax router, it might slow down your router if you choose to use use the 5Ghz band.Unlike some reviewers stated here, my setup does fine on the 2.4 Ghz band and I can assure you that you DON’T have to be on the same network to view the camera once installation is completed. The app itself can be difficult to navigate at times with a few submenus. App controls use a virtual D-pad to PTZ and it is not as fast as other app’s swipe controls.Inexplicably, the microSD slot and pinhole reset button are not accessible unless the camera is pointing as far up as it will go. If you have trouble setting this camera up, the reset button will be hidden out of sight (and the instructions may tell you to reset the camera WITHOUT clearly telling you where the reset is). On a related matter, there is a pinhole right below the lens and status light. That is the un-labled microphone hole. If you mistake that pinhole for the reset pinhole much further down on the the ball, you may mistakenly push the reset tool into your microphone, thereby damaging your camera’s mike. Please don’t ask how I found that particular fact out…PROS:Great Adaptable Resolution PictureGood 3X OPTICAL ZoomSmooth Movement (PTZ)Optically Adjustable Focus (manual & auto) can be helpful if looking through a screened windowEncrypted Secure CommunicationsBoth 2.4 & 5 Ghz CompatibleLong Range, Steady Signal on 2.4 Ghz BandGood Night Vision, (IR can be disabled for window installation)CONS:App is not Intuitive and has an Awkward Control InterfaceSetup can be Difficult, Having Poor or Vague InstructionsThe Location of the Reset Pinhole and Micro-SD Slot (are difficult to access and are not well covered in the instructions)

Good Performance, no subscription cost
I own 5 cameras and have recommended them to others (bought two for others). You can access them on your PC using their utility, even remotely on a PC or Phone, with no subscription fee & you don’t require a smart phone to set them up (yet) – you can pay for other features. The picture quality is excellent.Their PC app is a bit buggy (crashes sometime if your scanning recorded videos), but easily acceptable for the camera cost.Detected captures are on a local uSD card; although it may be possible to capture to a local file server, but I haven’t tried as mine are all indoor.I’ve purchased from others; but the combination of cost, quality, and flexibility have made these my preferred. That said, I would love a higher level optical zoom (10x+) camera from them.
