CAD Audio HA4 ReviewI bought the CAD headphone amp for use with an M Audio 610, iMac and Pro Tools 9. I’ve found the 610 has sufficient volume when I’m recording solo, but when my neighbor comes over to lay down keyboard tracks, the 610 isn’t loud enough to hear the song while talking to relate chord/bridge changes. Also, the 610 routes the 2nd headphone out through main outs 3 and 4 instead of main outs 1 and 2, so another annoyance when two people need to monitor (originally tried a headphone splitter on the 1st headphone jack on the 610).I chose the CAD model since it’s made of steel, has the 4 headphone jacks in the front of the unit, and because I own a CAD Trion 7000 mic, and used to own CAD Equitek 100 and 300 mics. I read reviews from other headphone amps, so thanks to those folks who provided good insight. The HA4 didn’t have any reviews at the time I bought it, so just wanted to relate experience.I wasn’t seeking any type of higher fidelity than the 610 provides, just to add a little bit of volume for when two or more people are recording and conversing, which the CAD does nicely. It has plenty of volume if that’s what you need or want.

Works as expected.I got this to replace the Monoprice version that cuts out when high-impedance headphones are connected. It works great. I use it for demonstrating video games. It gets loud enough for anything I’d want to do. Sound quality is great at low and moderate levels. I don’t use it at high levels so I can’t comment on that. The power cord’s a little short (under 6′?) and it’s got a wall transformer on the end. Since it draws so little power, it would work better for me if it could be powered via USB. That’s probably not how most people use it, though. The audio input is on the front. I’d prefer it on the back, but that’s a small concern.

  3. Good shoe – bad shoe size

I now can only use 1 channel so the box it now useless after about a yearI route the audio from my computer to this box so multiple people can hear audio at varying levels. Within the 1st month one of the channels blew out. about 4 months later channel 1 and 3 were gone. About a year later, channel 2 has a different level of volume on the left channel than the right. I now can only use 1 channel so the box it now useless after about a year. So if you only need a few months to a year’s use out of the box, it’s fine; however, if you are doing any type of quality sound I would pass on this one…

Get It!Bought this to upgrade from the Behringer headphone amp and it is SUBSTANTIALLY better. Not distorted like the behringer when volume is high. Love it. Built really well too.

  5. Ron

Great headphone ampGreat headphone amp! The tone and volume range are excellent. I had a cheap Behringer unit that didn’t work out of the box, so I upped the ante and went with this one. I’m very glad I did.

solid little box- the real test with a headphone amp …solid little box- the real test with a headphone amp is how long the jacks hold up and i won’t know that for a while- so far so good

What good is an amp without fidelityWhile using the same headset and switching from my stereo to the headphone amp the difference was dramatic! Tinny, thin, and lacking bass. What good is an amp without fidelity?
